I retired after 30+ years in the packaging industry. Now I don't do anything, except everything I couldn't do before. :)

I'm in Marketing. Which consists of taking something that isn't exactly what the customer wants or can afford, but you try to convince him that all his competitors are buying it so if he doesn't he'll soon be out of business. It's actually not that different from what the Mob used to do in New Jersey.

After 20+ years doing the corporate thing, I got downsized. So, now I own and run a sign shop. Less income, sure, but way more satisfaction. (Hopefully, someday we can address that pesky "less income" thing, too ;) )

Wait does gambling count? because as a very small stock Daytrader, I can't see any difference. the cons are the stress of playing with large sums of money ( well large for me, miniscule for the big boys and girls),uncertainity over income and having to sit in front of a computer screen. the pros are internet surfing and being able to walk away when I want. Also being able to noodle on a guitar in the quiet moments is a major perk. It could be better, it could always be worse, peace and good health to all, mike

Aside from being Dad to 3 kids and 2 dogs, I'm an airline captain with a profitable (!) national airline. I'm also a line check airman, which means I train our newhires and newly promoted captains on the fine art of real-life flying, as opposed to the sterile world of simulator flying.

After being self-employed (and away from home most of) the last handful of years, I dissolved the corporation and took a 'UNIX Administrator' job at the local (regional) health care place (remember when they were called hospitals?). It's a heckuva pay cut, but it was also a heckuva stress cut. Best part is, I work ten minutes from home, so I get to see my family much more than I ever have. And play guitars more. My background is in high-end UNIX systems and network engineering/administration/security.

This is sort of like an earlier thread " tell us about yourself". It asked: Where do you live? What do you for a living? When did you learn to play? What kind of music do you play?

I answered: In a van down by the river. I collect cans and bottles for recycling. I learned to play in prison. I play the blues(any wonder why?). I liked these answer and am sticking by them.

After 20 years in the environmental business as a national sales manager, I switched over to the insurance business and started working for myself about 6 years ago. Like most, took a big hit income wise but finally got to work for a boss that was only an ass about half of the time (versus 100% for my other bosses)!

I've been in advertising and marketing in one form or another (first art direction, then sales, currently a Controller/VP of Finance - "I keep trying to get out but they keep pulling me back in...") for about twenty years with another five in the middle of it all spent in accounting for a leasing firm.

But, with any luck, I'll be hitting a billion dollar Lotto soon so that I can retire to a small cafe where music, food and wine are the order of every day and my goal will be playing guitars, eating and drinking good wine until the billion runs out. And who knows? I may even buy OLJ a new van. Sounds good anyway, doesn't it?

I've worked in graphics for over 25 years (I started young, really!). My background is in graphic design, illustration and lettering design for print. Nine years ago I left a corporate art department to freelance. Now I call myself a multimedia designer because nobody really knows what the hell that means.

One of the things I do is design content (theme design, logos, animation, presentations, collateral material, etc.) for those national tradeshows, conventions and exhibits that people like Cliff create.

I also do interactive design (CDs, Kiosks, DVDs, websites) and animation and motion design.

Every once in a while I'll design a calendar, but only if it's got lots of cool guitars in it! :D

My day job, night job and weekend job is a preacher. Flexible, but uncertain hours. Not complaining, I love it.
As long as there are people; preachers, lawyers and P.I's will always be in demand.
Of course, wannabe guitar player. Received a compliment yesterday, was trying out guitars at Jerry's Guitars in Lawton and a young lady said, "Quit stopping to change guitars and just keep playing." Made my day.

I'm a Chief Warrant Officer (W-3) in the U.S. Coast Guard, going on my 24th year of duty. Currently the First Lieutenant aboard the Cutter "KUKUI" homeported in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Here's a link to our webpage. web page
I spent the first twenty years working my way up the enlisted ranks to the rank of Chief Quartermaster (E-7) before receiving my commission in 2001.

Didn't plan on making this a career, but I've enjoyed it too much to retire (yet).

I'm part of a small company who happened to build some software that big companies and federal government departments seem to like. My primary role is exhanging our software for other people's money. It was three of us in 2001 and now its 75. We should double again this year. This is the backup plan in case the Super Lotto numbers don't hit.

I have spent nearly 30 years selling ridiculously expensive professional audio products to producers, engineers, artists, and tour sound companies. Have had a couple of diversions which took me to public relations, professional fundraising, and even a little politics and government work, but keep coming back to the music, sound, and recording business. Through all of this, I have always enjoyed the guitars.

I'm pretty new (3yrs) at the last job I'm ever gonna have. It's kinda like MIB, or the Matrix: There was no turning back once I started (it's that good). I sell industrial power transmission and motion control equipment used in automated process/assembly equipment on everything from food packaging to automotive assemby equipment. We are essentially guns for hire in the outside sales arena. Some of the products we sell are no-brainers that people (some of you) buy through PT/bearing houses already, others are highly engineering intensive applications that can turn into long term projects (like the machines Intel uses to test and grade it's processors). So I spend my days primamrily doing applications engineering and sales support for for our outside guys. I'm the primary point of contact for one of our lines IMC Camco/Ferguson on the west coast, I co-adminster (I finally got some help) our CRM software server, and I'm the de-facto IT guy in the office. I'm well compensated, and hope to be an owner some day.

Regional sales manager in the healthcare division for a company that makes and sells a ton of storage related stuff. Shelving, crash and medication carts, lab furniture - stuff like that.

I got into sales 15 years ago by default, not career choice. College drop-out, moved from a small town in NC to Houston, needed to make some bucks - you know the drill. When I reached my thirties and started to realize I'm probably not going to be a rock and roll star, I had serious concerns about being "in sales" from now on. I had to deal with one of the rogue thoughts that slips in uninvited - "is this it?" I'm ok with it now. Our customers help sick people get better, and if I can serve that process without succumbing to the temptations of greed that make a lot of people do wrong - then I'm ok with that.

I still wish "guitar noodling", "research on random subjects", and "reflection while sitting by bodies of water" were coveted,well-paying careers.

Happy Holidays to you all. Hug em if you got em.

My fancy title for the work I do is a "Museum Exhibit Specialist" I work for The Resource Center in charge of the many Historic Sites throughout New York State.
My job title does not require me to do as many of the things I actually end up doing for these sites...I have been invloved "unprofessionaly" in area History since a child so I am pleased to be allowed to build Scale Models and Dioramas and at times Custom Woodcarvings to add that extra touch in some of the exhibits I am building or when old furniture needs to be returned to its original beauty at these sites. My main duty's are in the manufacture of the cases and cabinets, used to display this states wonderful historic collections.

I recently had the privilage of carving missing parts of the podium in the "Assembly Chambers" in our State Capitol Building. It is a great job most days, but it has it's personel problems and it is a long drive every day. But like most of us It is still not making a living playing music so it is not my dream job!

What a cross section we have in this membership!

Randy

My title at work is Switching Equipment Tech ( I can't spell technition). Don't do much work on the switching equipment any more. Now it's circuit packs and fiber optics. 36 yrs with what I like to call "the phone company." Diamond State Telephone, then Bell Atlantic, now Verizon.
Still waiting for that Lottery pension plan to kick in so I can retire. And still trying to "get over the hump" with my guitar "playing."

Retired after 21 years in the Marine Corps as an FO (forward observer),while there I transfered into graphic arts for a while, then to aviation precision measurement equipment repair and calibration (metrology), all-the-while maintaining a part-time business as a sign painter. After retiring from the Marines I accepted a job as "working" City Superintendent for a small town in northern Michigan (sometimes I call it Mayberry), where I supervise the water, sewer, streets and park departments, and look for grant money. On my off time (ha-ha) I lead a worship team at our church.

Isn't "Large American Car Company" kind of an oxymoron? I can't think of a "small" American car company off the top of me head.

Actually interesting to think about how convolved things have become in the car business. Doesn't GM now own Saab and Kia, Ford owns Volvo and Jag, Chrysler is part of MB ...

I've got a good friend who works at the MB plant in Stuutgart (which by the way, in terms of a factory tour, THAT is the one you want to see). Anyway, to listen to him the story is that MB owns Chrysler, not the other way around. And the MB's that are made in the US (I think the ML's) are NOT called MB's by the Germans. They are called CHRYSLER-Benz. Nothing wrong with National Pride, I guess.

I teach guitar and am the assistant administrator/director for our church's School of Fine Arts. The irony about me teaching guitar is I don't read a lick of music. I tell my students if you want to learn music theory you need to go two doors down the hall, but if you want to learn to play guitar, THAT I can help you with.

Before I got into music education (that is, if you can call what I do music education), I played professionally from 1977-94, and then tried retail management for about 10 years and hated every minute of it.

After my bout with colon cancer last year, I decided life's to short to waste your time doing a job you hate so I got out of the retail thing. I enjoy what I'm doing now, and it's fun being in on the ground floor of a brand new school (we just completed our first semester and are ramping up for our second to start next week). I still have an awesome outlet for playing, as I also help lead worship in our church as the leader of the Praise Band. It's a non-paid position, but one I wouldn't trade for anything.

Dave, Mercedes DOES own Chrysler, not the other way around. The Germans run the company. Daimler-Chrysler is NOT an American company. Check out the book "Taken For A Ride" if you want the straight story.

I was referring to General Motors and Ford. Ford owns Jaguar, Aston-Martin, Volvo, Land Rover and holds a controlling interest in Mazda.

The way things are going, there won't be ANY big American car companies in 10 years. A couple of moderate-sized ones, if we're lucky.

I'm not sure, but I don't think Converse allows anyone from New York within 50 miles of the city limits.

Unless, of course, you can say "y'all", "fixin", and "Long live W" without smiling in the same sentence, can put down a 3 pound chicken-fried steak with all the trimmings in under 30 minutes, and can bridle and saddle a horse blindfolded. Maybe then you can be an adopted Texan. :D

After owning a restaurant for the past 11 years, I recently sold the busines and play my guitars a lot more. No, I am not bored yet. Doing some consulting work, while waiting for Mick or Keith to call for the next US Tour...ha ha ha.
Play weekly acoustic guitar for my church services, and open mic stuff both electric and acoustic, whenever I can.

I worked as a facilities engineer for a large corporation for over 27 years. Started out as a production worker a gradually worked my way up the ladder. In 1990 after our plant was sold to a much smaller company was told, (along with several hundred others), that my services were no longer required. After several years my wife and I moved to Tennessee where we both work a theme park called "Dollywood" owned in part by Dolly Parton. I work for The Southern Gospel Music Association and work in their museum located within the park. This next year I plan to start drawing social security and only work part time. I sing occasionally in church and spend my off time visiting some of the older folks that are in nursing home or shut- in at home and play and sing for them. No money but a real blessing for me.

Left a lot out of the story but I've tried not to ramble on, (not too much).

I've enjoyed reading all the other posts. :)

Got to run and do some pickin' and grinnin' :D

Well, I've been to Dallas / Fort Worth, and found the people pretty friendly. And I love eating beef. The only thing I found annoying was that I could go down the street to the strip mall to buy a gun, but had to drive to the next county to get a bottle of scotch! If I were mayor I'd change that.

Since everybody is giving history, I guess I need to add that in addition to being an electrician and an operations manager, I've been a professional grower for a large wholesale greenhouse operation, a mobile power specialist, selling and building PTO's and hydraulic pumps for the trucking industry, and a water pump installer. Obviously, I've stretched my biology degree to its fullest extent.

Full time musician - or I was until my wife died. Since that I've concentrated on raising my kids, and I'm just playing gigs here and there. I'm staying home with them and watching them as closely as I can. No other day job.

They found their mother dead in the middle of the night while I was out playing in a band. They were only ages 4 and 7 at the time. They seem to be fine, and I'm making sure of it.

Glad to hear that the kids seem to be holding up but even more glad to hear that you're taking care of them, Trag. That's pretty young to accept weight like that but that's probably nothing you don't know by now. Hope everything works out for you guys.

I am a televison engineer at Disney/ABC Cable Networks Group, I manage a group of 6 engineers. We are responsible for maintenance and repair of all the on-air videotape machine, servers and related equipment for The Disney Channel, ABC Family, Disney's Toon Network, Buena Vista Syndication and SoapNet (that wonderful 24 hour soap channel all you guys watch!) It is a very interesting job, that has many surprises. It can be slow as a turtle to as hectic as a nuclear disaster, and I love it!

Asked around, and nobody seems to know quite what it is I Do do. (bee do bee do)

The title on the door (If there was a door, or writing on it) would say Sales Manager, for a television advertising channel. (the TV listings channel.)

But I spend more time writing and voicing commercials, or shmoozzing bigger (?!we have BIGGER?) clients.

It's a pretty small company, but it serves two provinces. (U.S. landmass equivalent of 10 or 12 states, population equivalent of 2 good size cities)

Heck of a lot of fun.
...................................
Sometimes play in bands when someone gets sick. (I hate to practice) Play with folkies around town a bit. Made a very poor living at it wa-ay back in the 70's.

Oh yeah, send songs off to Nashville sometimes too. I get a much better quality of rejection these days. Really must go there someday.

True story...went to my dentist two appointments ago and had my teeth cleaned by the hawtest (bar none!) dental hygienist I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. We got to talking and I asked her about her accent. My guess was one of the eastern 'stan' countries (and yes, that's exactly what I said, and no, she was not offended), and it turned out I was right (although now I forget which one). Anywho, more chatting and she's a MS in Geology from some apparently prestigous University in the Russian sphere of influence and worked in the petroleum field before relocating to the Middle of Nowhere, Michigan. Very interesting gal. She wasn't there the last time I went in, though, which was sort of a bummer.

Past: Sales, mid and high-end home audio and video equipment. Some college, learned about computers. Worked for 25 years in the computer industry, first as a software engineer with custom systems (i.e. SCADA), then as a QA/Test Engineer with Compaq/HP. In 2003 was flushed out of HP.

Current: Own a 48 unit garden-style apartment complex, learning the "real estate investor" business. Hoping I won't ever have to go back to work for corporate America.

I'm part of a Life Teen Praise and Worship band. Its a great combination of a spritual, fun and rewarding activity (and, playing guitars!).

As for me, I started out as a factory worker until I lost my job to cheaper labor. I went back to college and earned degrees in Math and Computer Science. I am currently a systems analyst with Lehman Brothers, but I'm looking for something more enjoyable and creative.

Bradley, wish your son luck for me. There is a little of that involved in the bar exam. Most likely he'll overstudy and learn a bunch of stuff he never uses once he specializes. From someone who took and passed 2 in 2 months, they are not as hard as some people make them. Of course, we didn't have many laws back in the stone age.

Me? I'm just a lowly special education teacher, who wakes up everyday from Monday to Friday, hoping that something exciting will happen in the education and well-being of the children that I work with. To date, I have taught youngsters with developmental delays (for preschoolers), PDD (pervasive developmental disorder), autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, ADD / ADHD, dyslexia, TBI (traumatic brain injury), and multiple disabilities. I work mainly in the classroom of 10-12 children until 4 p.m. Then from 4 to about 7:30 or 8p.m., I provide 1:1 special instruction for students with disabilties in their respective homes or in a venue of either the student's or the parents' choosing.

When the good lady wife agreed to us moving to Spain two years ago it was partley to save my sanity and get me away from mending cars (Actually more to do with keeping me away from cazy customers crazier targets and some seriousley deranged corporate stuff)Two years down the line we dont make enough from music to survive so I'm back in a garage 4 days a week . You got to pay the bills even when you can see the mediterranean sea from your terrace.

I'm a media specialist/graphic artist with a company that develops computer-based training for clients such as the Navy, Marines, etc. So I spend my day creating illustrations, Flash interactive graphics and 3D models of things like aircraft carrier and jet engine parts, and other challenging items.

You are QUITE correct in that assumption.

I thought that you might've been referring to myself.

Not really, but I'm fortunate enough to include music into my daily class and individual schedules of the youngsters that I work with. That means, I'm allowed to bring my guitar along -- and accompany them during music sing-a-longs -- even for something as simple as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." :)

p.s.
-- if the opportunity comes into sight, I think I'll be willing to give it a try.

I sell commercial coffee brewers to service companies, mostly in New England and New York, Pittsburg, and Cleveland area.

I'm not a great salesman, and I'm not a great guit-picker, but I am a pretty good coffee drinker.

I'm a lawyer for injured plaintiffs. I create business for guys like Mark in Boise. My specialty is dental/medical malpractice, but I handle all sorts of injury cases. I've been doing this for 6 years.

Before that, I was a defendants' attorney like Mark. Did that for 6 years.

For the 16 years before that, I was a pharmacist. Ergo the "rx" in my screen name.

I am in The radio Broadcasting field and have been for the Last 23 years. Started off as a DJ in training became Part-time then a full time Announcer in 1982 All the years later I concentrate on Commercial Production.I write scripts, produce spots and assign spots to be done by other announcers. The broadcasting cluster that i work for now has 6 Radio Stations in this market. I handle the commercials for all of these stations. And when i get a chance I play a little guitar.Radio Doesnt exactly pay alot of money, and with a wife and two kids, I'm looking to get out of the Radio Biz and into something that will actually help pay the bills.

I am a Company Director and look after the electronics side of our business. We are the sole agent for UK, Eire and Africa, for American made, Engine electonic goveror systems. The factory is just round the corner from Ovation. They are fitted to many large diesels for very close speed control. I also look after generator control systems and provide the syncronising and load contol sytems, with digital controllers for generators, both big and small. I travel in UK and get to Africa and USA often.

Yeah, UBB doesn't allow a bunch of spaces. You have to use characters...
