OK, I know this sounds crazy, but I noticed awhile back that my favorite polo shirt was all fuzzy with those little nubs all around the front abdomen area. The shirt is fairly new. Then I noticed the black Ovation T-shirt I got from last year’s factory tour has the same wear. What’s up with that?

Then I figured it out. I have worn both shirts during several stand-up gigs, and when standing and playing my Ovation the bowl rubs right on the worn spots on my shirts!! It's the textured surface! Its tearing up the cotton fibers!

Now I acknowledge that I am…..shall we say.….a bit girth-some around the mid-section, but it seems like there ought to at least be a warning label or something!

Anyone else noticing this issue? Maybe I need to consider getting a shiny-bowl model.

Brian,
You could just borrow something from Brad's closet.

Brian;
I've run across that as well . . .
When we gig, I sweat like a friggin' pig.
I bought a bunch of Nike/Head "athletic" t-shirts in assorted colors (black). They're made out of a Lycra material that's "breathable". Some of them are smooth, and some are a real tight "basketweave" knit. I started to notice that the knitted ones started to "cling" to the bowl paint, and eventually I'd have all these "pulls" in the front of the shirts.

. . . s'best t'go with the silk Hawaiian shirts . . .

Brian is not a hawaiian shirt type guy.
But I'm working on him.

Has anyone tried sanding the back of the bowl? Or painting it with something smooth and glossy?

I've never had a problem with gloss finished rosewood ruining my clothing ;)

You could try using one of those "adult bibs" that they use in nursing homes. It'll protect your clothes from the abrasiveness of the bowls. Or play in the nude ...

Funny thing, I never get invited back to those places where I have played in the nude. So that's not really a workable solution.

I'm liking the sound of all of this silk talk.

Try lengthening your guitar strap and wearing the guitar a little lower. Dave

There's a "Does this shirt make my butt look big" question in here somewhere, isn't there?

Just go for the silk! :D

In all honesty, it hasn't been that much of a problem (with exception of those "basketweave" shirts). It might be because my two gigging guitars are older and the texture on the back may have smoothed-down a bit . . .

The one that I really used to have a problem with was the UltraDeluxe 12-string (now residing with SteveChapman). For some reason, that thing has a REALLY textured bowl! It's like sandpaper.

But then I'll be left wondering; did they come to hear the music, or only to see the eye candy?

Unfortunate, but true. The Ovation is not wide enough to make me legal in this country.

Try the Neil Young look, old plaid workshirts. They look better as they age. And that floppy hat takes care of the dome glare too!

I was under the impression that the color mauve naturally repelled the bowl material thus eliminating the bowl rubbing the shirt material away. I thought that's why the OFC powers that be recommend mauve shirts when playing O's.
