What's on your short list ???

Just pretend and imagine an Ovation guitar collection of SEVEN guitars, representing different types of instruments. What should they be to cover all the bases?

Here's the categories:

1. A traditional center hole, floral rosette acoustic. Like a Legend or Custom Legend, something like that. Bonus points if it's a shiny bowl.

2. A multihole wood topper. Elite, Custom Elite, etc. Bonus points for 1537.

3. A wide neck steel string, Folklore type guitar with slotted headstock. Preferably 12-frets. Kudos for Josh Whites and FD14's.

4. A textured top Adamas. Slothead takes the cake, but big props to Adamas I and U681 as well.

5. An Ovation 12-string. Mixed preferences here, Adamas textured tops and slothead 12-fretters are the choice.

6. An Ovation nylon. Everybody's got to have a nylon even if it's never played (like mine). Country Artist neck widths preferred. Must be A/E.

7. Something personal, unusual or rare. Maybe a B-winner, a customized Viper, hurricane or Thunderhead, a mandolin, ukulele, longneck, parlor, contour bowl, collecters series, double neck, etc.

What'cha got ???

I just spent an hour last night on my Classic, just trying to play Classical Gas. It seemed almost like a perfect guitar, except it's tough to do barre chords on the wide flat, neck.
I sort of have your bases covered, except for an Adamas. I think my last upgrade will be the 12 string. I rarely play anything for 12 string and I'm not good enough to fingerpick with one. The Applause actually sounds pretty good.

Interesting.......and great question/poll!
OK, here are my choices from what I have in the stable.

1) 1719 30th anniversary custom legend

2) Both 1537 and 1547 (Yoohoo....lucky me!)

3) FD-14

4) U681T

5) Adamas 1688 12 string (Big Blue 2)

6) Nothing yet....been looking at the 1773LX

7) Breadwinner Limited & Deacon 12 string

Dave, based on your criteria, I am pretty damn lucky to have 6 of the 7 categories filled with some of Ovations finest!

1. A traditional center hole, floral rosette acoustic. Like a Legend or Custom Legend, something like that. Bonus points if it's a shiny bowl.
None of those, it would have to be that center hole Adamas from a few years back.

2. A multihole wood topper. Elite, Custom Elite, etc. Bonus points for 1537.
Definately the black 1537 tops my list.

3. A wide neck steel string, Folklore type guitar with slotted headstock. Preferably 12-frets. Kudos for Josh Whites and FD14's.
Definately a FD-14 on the list.

4. A textured top Adamas. Slothead takes the cake, but big props to Adamas I and U681 as well.
Two Adamas II's & U681T, done.

5. An Ovation 12-string. Mixed preferences here, Adamas textured tops and slothead 12-fretters are the choice.
Adamas II 1885, done

6. An Ovation nylon. Everybody's got to have a nylon even if it's never played (like mine). Country Artist neck widths preferred. Must be A/E.
Are there any Adamas Nylons? otherwise, nope...

7. Something personal, unusual or rare. Maybe a B-winner, a customized Viper, hurricane or Thunderhead, a mandolin, ukulele, longneck, parlor, contour bowl, collecters series, double neck, etc.
Double Neck, done.

Let's see, 3 out of 7, looks like lots of room for GAS.

Pride (1)
Humility Seeing ourselves as we are and not comparing ourselves to others is humility. Pride and vanity are competitive. If someone else's pride really bothers you, you have a lot of pride.

Avarice/Greed (5)
Generosity This is about more than money. Generosity means letting others get the credit or praise. It is giving without having expectations of the other person. Greed wants to get its "fair share" or a bit more.

Envy (2)
Love "Love is patient, love is kind…" Love actively seeks the good of others for their sake. Envy resents the good others receive or even might receive. Envy is almost indistinguishable from pride at times.

Wrath/Anger (3)
Kindness Kindness means taking the tender approach, with patience and compassion. Anger is often our first reaction to the problems of others. Impatience with the faults of others is related to this.

Lust (7)
Self control Self control and self mastery prevent pleasure from killing the soul by suffocation. Legitimate pleasures are controlled in the same way an athlete's muscles are: for maximum efficiency without damage. Lust is the self-destructive drive for pleasure out of proportion to its worth. Sex, power, or image can be used well, but they tend to go out of control.

Gluttony (6)

Faith and Temperance Temperance accepts the natural limits of pleasures and preserves this natural balance. This does not pertain only to food, but to entertainment and other legitimate goods, and even the company of others.

Sloth (4)
Zeal Zeal is the energetic response of the heart to God's commands. The other sins work together to deaden the spiritual senses so we first become slow to respond to God and then drift completely into the sleep of complacency.

Personally I am waiting for the Ovation sloth or Avarice model

1) S771C-4 Cedar Top Baladeer Special

2) 1537 (damaged top OK) :p

3) Josh White (Mmmm...shiny-bowl)

4) OFC guitar

5)1688-8

6)6773LX

7)Breadwinner Limited Barnwood.

Stephen,
There are a couple of 1113s on ebay, pretty cheap. They don't meet Dave's criteria of narrower neck or A/E, but he's not right all the time.

1. After playing Balladeer#36, maybe something in that vintage. (or mebbe a JoshWhite).

2. EliteT shallow bowl w/VIPreamp. Metallic MidnightBlue & BrightSilver (to match my car). Gig Guitar.

3. FD-14.

4. Ute.

5. One or two s/n's away from Moody's BigBlue.

6. While a CountryArtist seems the logical choice, I've been playing this old Tak classical as of late and I'm starting to like the classical neck, so maybe an O Classical A/E (just to keep things "interesting" . . )

7. Now that I've seen/played more than one of 'em, an O palm tree Resonator.

Ok, I think I've got all this covered already....

1. A traditional center hole, floral rosette acoustic. Like a Legend or Custom Legend, something like that. Bonus points if it's a shiny bowl.
How about a Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer?

2. A multihole wood topper. Elite, Custom Elite, etc. Bonus points for 1537.
1537 & 87 Collectors

3. A wide neck steel string, Folklore type guitar with slotted headstock. Preferably 12-frets. Kudos for Josh Whites and FD14's.
FD-14

4. A textured top Adamas. Slothead takes the cake, but big props to Adamas I and U681 as well.
Adamas 1 12 string -- "Big Blue"

5. An Ovation 12-string. Mixed preferences here, Adamas textured tops and slothead 12-fretters are the choice.
1969 GC 12 string and Big Blue

6. An Ovation nylon. Everybody's got to have a nylon even if it's never played (like mine). Country Artist neck widths preferred. Must be A/E.
New, custom ordered 1773LX

7. Something personal, unusual or rare. Maybe a B-winner, a customized Viper, hurricane or Thunderhead, a mandolin, ukulele, longneck, parlor, contour bowl, collecters series, double neck, etc.

How'd I do?

How about:

1 An LX

2 An older center hole

3 A Limited 12 string

4 A ripping viper.

5 A Breadwinner or Deacon

6 An LX 12 string (coming soon)

7 Something borrowed

I'm missing 3, 4 and 6......would like a Folklore, but not at the expense of something else (she-who-must-be-obeyed has degreed NINE as my limit for guitars). Textured-top Adamas, I'm too cheap to pony up what it would take for one.

Nylon-string...not gonna happen. I won't play one, and if I'm not playing it, I'm not owning it.

1) 1978 1617 Legend, 1981 1118 Glen Campbell 12-string

2) 2002 Collectors'

5) 2001 Adamas Melissa Etheridge 1598MERB, plus 1981 1118 Glen Campbell slothead

7) 2002 Collectors', 2005 Collectors', 2004 GCS771-C cedar top Balladeer, 1976 Applause AA-14

I think I gave you a bum steer anyway, Stephen. I think they were 1116s. Might be interesting to compare the spruce tops to the cedar, but not interesting enough to risk getting in more trouble with my wife. I'd buy one for my daughter, but her hands aren't big enough. Besides my wife will only fall for that excuse so many times.

Weez,
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step...

1. Got nuttin'---and further more, don't want nuttin'. So there.

2. 1537- (had two, now got one...share the the wealth mi amigos)

3. FD14- I've decided this is the only relationship I actually need in my life. There's always another women, the dog can take care of herself, but Jeffy needs the Fudd.

4.U681T-Missing, pressumed having a good time...may never ween itself off Bangers & Mash.

5.Check back in three days, I might have somethin in a 12fret slotthead.

6. I just stretch a cat across the ironing board. Insert lamp cord for electric.

7. Lowden O25- Does it look like I care that it's not an Ovation?
(and an '80's Jap Strat, that actually plays and sounds great)

1. Anniversary 1657-7. Still one of my faves.
2.Book Elite- A work of art.
3.Wide necks always hard for me to play (small hands). But if a nice Folklore at a great price shows up,I may jump on it.
4.1881-BG Adamas II
5.85 Collectors 12
6.1624-4
7.Have thought about a Celeb Doubleneck. Could actually us it. Rarest thing I have is a Modulus Graphite Flight 4 (prototype).Story I heard was there were only 6 made. After they went into production there were supposidly only 40-50 made. Who knows?
5 outa 7 not too bad

Ok, I failed to read the directions and Dave has a definate lean toward Center holes and Shiny Bowls. I prefer the multi-holes and have a lust for depth.

I do agree that each portfolio needs diversification and a sense of passion!

After reading this thread, and past ones, I wonder if there are enough FD-14s to satisfy everyone????...I want one, too!!!! One of the few models worth sacrifcing something I have for.

Of course, I presume the Mothership would make something close enough for the right pile of dinero....

I don't have all the bases covered, but I'm getting there. I'm waiting until I can get an OFC guitar to satisfy the textured top Adamas. I don't know if I'll ever get an O classical ... but looking forward to checking out Moody's later in the week.

"4.U681T-Missing, pressumed having a good time...may never ween itself off Bangers & Mash."

Having a seriously good time, been out and seen the sights, Big Ben, Tower of London. And not just any old bangers and mash - hand-made Cumberland sausages from Kennedy's in West Wickham, mash made with cream, butter and cracked pepper, served up with an onion gravy so thick you can stand a fork up in it. Washed down with a couple of pints of Shepherd Neame Spitfire Bitter which she seems to have developed a real taste for.

She don't never want to come back to chitlings and squirrel.
