Cliff was so impressed playing the Martin guitars at my house that he couldn't wait to get to NAMM and relieve his joy ...

Hey!! Where's the handle to flush?
Cliff is showing off again. Did you ever notice that people with ""large members" usually don't mind standing further away from the urinal?

Turn it around...

Martin fan "pissing" on an Ovation...

...Well....that's funny too...

....you could photoshop a little handle on the soundboard, then jiggle it...

(I find there is a good number of Martinians? Martinites? Martians? have a need to feel superior and lack a sense of humor...like there's not a guitar in the world that could compare. I love Martins but, I got news for them news for them....

I think the funniest post is:

I think that some people may have MISSED my point.

The question is NOT whether you like Ovation guitars or not.

The question IS whether you find OFC's topic funny.

Personally I DO NOT.

It's totally IRRELEVANT whether I like Ovations or not.

Um, if he didn't find it funny, why bother posting it to the board over there for even more people to see?

Jeebuz, some of those guys need to chill out. Then again, there are some that show promise. ;)

WOW. We're famous! I'm laughing like hell at the Martin board. First of all the guy who started the thread didn't just "happen" to stumble on the OFC and the photo of Cliff. He's a lurker around here and ashamed to admit to his woody friends that he secretly admires Ovations. Mark my words. Secondly, it's pretty amazing in the thread to see how many Marty's actually came out and said they owned or liked Ovations. Way to go guys.

Just to show that we don't play favorites (we'll piss on anything), maybe my Martin brothers will like this one better ...

And here is the totally ironic thing about this. Yesterday I post the photo of Cliff pissing on the Martin and today Mr. FedEx delivers to me a brand new MARTIN that I've been waiting for. So obviously I do NOT dislike Martins in any way. I just think the photo is damn funny and the reaction of the Marty's is about what one would expect. I'm sure the same would hold true if one of them posted a photo pissing into a roundback.

Yeah, I've seen some pretty good Martin bashing going on, but to be fair, most of the ribbing that I've gotten has been from on OFC member who's name I don't want to mention, but it rhymes with Biff :p

I don't care, it's all good fun to me.

To be honest, I'm equal opportunity in my bashing: Fibson, Gender, Tartin and Maylor are all fair game in my book. But, that's only because they're the biggest, most recognizable brands. Lesser known, but high quality brands (G&L, Hamer, Ovation, Steinberger) appeal to my 'root for the underdog' and 'which ever way the lemmings are heading, go the opposite direction' streaks.

This is really funny.

Here's the story:

We're walking down an aisle at NAMM and when we get to the end, I see this guitar. I asked Witko to snap my pic in front of it. Just before the shutter snapped, I whipped around and "assumed the position". The intent was to get back to Moody's house that night and convert into a bit of an “e-Postcard” to go on the Board here. Something along the lines of: "Greetings from NAMM . . Wish You Were Here . . . Having a Piss of a Time . ." Unfortunately, time didn't allow us to make the card.

Was it meant to be a swipe of “disrespect” towards Martin? No. In actuality, I would’ve MUCH preferred that the big guitar at the end of the aisle had had a Taylor headstock on it.
It had just “happened” that the victim guitar happened to be a Martin. (However, I DO like the “Calvin” analogy . . . tho I kind of see it more as David pissing on Goliath’s shoe).
I happen to have a great deal of respect for Martins. When I was at Master Witko’s house last week, I was all OVER his Steve Howe model, and I spent a great portion of Sunday morning
playing the 90+ year-old Martin nylon string that Moody’s uncle had willed to him. Both are great guitars and I really enjoyed playing them (ThanksAgain, Gentlemen!)
I give John Bruggy the occasional good-natured Martin “ribbing” basically because of the OFC connection here. John knows (or I hope he does, anyway) that I have no anti-Martin sentiments
(though if he showed up at a gig with a Taylor, I’d disown him completely:-)

I don’t have the luxury of whiling away my time exercising musical masturbation in front of the woodstove in a climate-controlled environment basking in woody overtones and extolling the virtues of
“toasted wheat underpinnings” (I still love THAT one:-) I work a hectic job with a demanding schedule, and the vast majority of my playing is done after driving my gear-laden car to a gig directly from work on a Friday or Saturday night. I live/work in Northern New Jersey and play acoustic rock in small bars/clubs. This often means that I will drive for an hour in single-digit weather, load in, set up, and be ready to play (loudly) in a stiflingly hot, crowded, noisy room (in the Summer, the extremes swing in the other direction) in about a half an hour. I don’t have (nor do the people who hire me) the luxury of waiting around while my guitar “acclimates” and have to retune after every song because of a bi-polar guitar neck. I have neither the time (nor the patience) to deal with that. I take my guitars out of their cases, tune ‘em up, play (hard) for two hours, take a ten minute break for a quick re-tune and a piss:-) , play for two more, and then it’s back into the cold (or hot) car a half hour later for the hour drive home. Ovations have been (and I’m sure Brugg will agree) the only guitar that will stand up to that kind of abuse, perform reliably, and sound great EVERY time. Somewhere down the road (if/when I can afford it), I wouldn’t mind having an old Martin hanging around the house to play on. But for now, there’s one or two more Ovations that I’d like to get to fulfill all of my gig needs. I’m quite positive that there are MANY gigging Martin owners out there that play everywhere from local coffeehouses to major concert venues and I’m sure that their Martins perform reliably for those situations. Unfortunately, I’m obviously not good enough to play those types of venues, and have to play the part of the itinerant weekend troubadour (although I’m booked almost every weekend for the better part of this year . . . and having “FUN” at it:-) Martins fulfill their needs, Ovations fulfill mine.

It never ceases to amaze me that a lot of the Martin guys will endlessly dole out the Ovation-bashes (Tupperware, salad bowls, boat paddles, . . I’ve heard ‘em all), yet when a swipe is jokingly made in the other direction, an offense is quickly taken. You can kick a dog just SO many times before he turns around and bites you in the balls once in a while. Grow some skin and live with it. I have.

BrianT or JohnB:
Feel free to forward any of this post along to your Martin brethren.
Tell ‘em it wasn’t meant as a disparagement against their beloved icon talisman.
It’s “Rock&Roll” for crying out loud!
Get your head out of the soundhole once in a while and have a laugh!
(There's bigger things going on in the country to be "pissed-off" about)

. . . and whoever the guy was that PhotoShop’ped me and Moody into the Ovation booth . . .

. . . I’m available to give lessons . . . he needs ‘em.

Cliff:

I agree with every word, and like I said, I never took offense to your Martin ribbing. Hell, if I don't get offended at the abuse I get at your gigs, I'm certainly not going to get offended by a guitar remark, but you already know that. :) As you know, Ovations are the only guitars that I gig with any more, just like I told the Martin guys. They are the only guitars that stand up not only to the things that you described so very well, but also to being owned by a clutz like yours truly. I should have never jumped into the conversation on the Martin board, but I , like you, could not believe that they were so upset over a picture.

Go figya!

I was tempted to jump into the Martin fray myself but overcame the impulse. Why try to talk to people who have an unchangable mind set? Trying to explain the science and logic behind the bowl design would be lost on most of them.
I would add emphasis to just one angle of Cliff's manifesto. Ovations are not just durable, dependable workhorses. The good ones sound great and the great ones sound fantastic! And that goes for plugged and unplugged.
But there I go...preaching to the choir.

Brad, I think what you'd have to do is explain the science of Cliff taking a leak.......

O's and M's are just different wine for difference occasions. I own both and ain't gonna go get my panties in a bunch over what other people think on either side of the fence. Dave

Bravo Cliff!

Not only did you make a great case for Bulletin Board Attitude 101 but you wrote the perfect case for what the "Every man" concept, that CK pushed, was meant to be.

Thanks!

Has anyone acknowledged the total sacrifice that BrianT made in "Outing" himself on the Martin Board?

Gulfcoast, we periodically post non-O things in the for sale section. No big thing when done every now and then.

My question about most of this.....how many of the guys on the Martin board that were bashing O's have even played one?...and how many of those have played a real USA model....and then how may of those have played a slothead, a U681, a 1537, etc.

My guess is very few.

Way too much time spent on snobs here, guys. We said we appreciate Martins (and I sincerely believe most here do) and that it was a joke. No sense beating a dead llama.

Screw 'em if they can' take a joke.

I would guess few. Most of us here seem to be old enough to remember when Ovation ruled!I love my Martin, but I spent a few years in the late 70`s playing a D28 behind a deep bowl legend, the O played much better ,sounded better plugged in ,and not better just different unplugged. This is a quick but true story. I wanted an O really bad during that time, but could not afford one with the martin. I made a deal to trade the D28 for a legend(or it could have been a balladeer) with a music store in Mobile, AL. I went back the next afternoon with the guitar to make the trade, and the owner had loaned the O to Harry Chapin, who was playing in town that night. The O never returned to the store, I don't know if Harry kept it or not. I was pissed, but felt like I had a brush with greatness!

After years of owning guitars made in the far east, my first ever U.S. made guitar was my Ovation balladeer, and I think it was the best choice I ever made! Two years later, and having had its share of abuse from my sub-standard technique, it's still going and no way am I going to part with it -- at least not anytime soon.

I think the guys were pathetic - I like to think that if Master T had been with them instead of earning an honest dollar demoing he would actually have pissed on the wood boxes. Brits do bad behaviour so much better.

Actually I quite like some Martins, but if I was spending that kind of dough on a wood box I'd go for a Collings. I took a dump in the Ban-Tam booth though.

They're selling it as the optional "mute".

Witko was egging me on t'take a picture of the BanjoTam booth attendants, but that was a line even I wouldn't cross . . . Mom warned me about certain things NOT make fun of . . .

(it WAS f@ckin' "Classic" tho . . . :-)

I was once an active member of the UMGF, and as far as I know I still have my account there, but I still have my doubts about going back. There are nice members there, but I have my reservations for them "snobs."

I posted about it before ... (reading between the lines) ... I was not happy at some of the postings for the Martins on the lower end. Anything lower than the D-15 (except the LXM) were almost always never mentioned, and usually looked down upon. With regards to the Martins that I own, some disgruntled member once sent me a PM message that read: "...sure it's a Martin, but it's not a D-28." I think that was the ticker that made me decide to shy away from the UMGF, and it's really sad, since I happen to like M guitars, besides Ovations.

I belong to the UMGF and can tell you that it's no different that the OFC. Yes in general they don't like anything lower than a D15. It's no different than they way we talk about Celebrity and Applause models.

The only difference is that by and large the members of UMGF has spent a LOT more money on their instruments than we have here. And with that coms a certain degree of snootiness. I tend to just ignore it. There is NO way I'm going to convince a guy who has spent $40,000. on a collection of 7 guitars that his choices are crap because they don't have plastic backs.

I just read it, enjoy it, occasionally contribute, and don't let it ruin my day.

Well said.

I occasionally read some of the posts on other guitar forums. I usually ignore the Ovation bashing that sometimes goes on.

I own and enjoy the 2 Martins I have.

I also enjoy the 4 Ovations I have.

Here's a novel thought: It's not the instrument, it's the player. In the professional music world (hmm, professional used with respect to the music world is also a kinda abstract idea) there are lots of folks that you can hand any kind of a guitar to and they will make them all sound good. I hear players in the studios doing this all the time. This " my Taylor is better than your Collings is better than your Ovation is better than your Martin and I am upgrading to something else and on and on" is all kinda silly, self-defeating, glass-half-empty stuff. How much it costs is all relative and of course there are tonal and quality differences in the range of instruments. I have seen it before here in the forum where it has been said, "Why don't you stop typing and go practice playing guitar" 'cause after all, that's what it is about, right, the joy of playing music, instead of arguing about what's better or who spent more money?

How right you are.

My wife and I just got back from a cruise. While in Mexico there were two guys on the street playing beat up gut strings, action about 1/4" high, old belts for straps. They had La Bamba down pat.

Wish I had taken their picture and posted it.

Guess I'll have to go back. :D
