Location: Illinois | I found an Applause by Ovation guitar in a Antique shop. The guy doesn't know anything about guitars so was most unhelpful.
It is a 'classic' model 6 string. Has 1/8"ish jack on the lower bout. Don't know much about 'lectrics, but it has good tone. I've been able to find serialization for Ovation, but don't know if it applies to Applause.
Can anyone tell me the age of SN 199217?
He said his cousin bought it for about $400.00. I'm hard pressed to find a new Applause for that kind of scratch. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I had a brand new Applause AE-48 for half the price the antique shop is/was selling you ($200 to be exact), and paid an extra $35 for the gig bag (both including taxes). It was made in China. Despite its "bare bones" pickup system, it still served me well for nearly two years, until I finally parted with it three weeks ago.
If you are willing to spend $400 -- as mentioned by Standingovation -- you should be able to purchase an Ovation made in the U.S. Good luck. |

Location: Illinois | To be clearer, He quoted what the owner purchased it for new. I'm suspecting that included the HSC. Apparently purchased on a whim and never played enough to even replace strings. From the condition of the top, I'd say to very shortly thereafter ended up in the attic or a cold closet. He's got less than 2 C notes on the whole works, but I think if I point out it's damage and the work it'll take to repair I can get him under a C note. I'm shooting for $50.00. IF I figure I can repair it all from above the board. If not, it sounds like, from responses to another post that it'll take a stick of di-an-o-mite to get the lid off. Then I'll leave it as is I've already got a wall hanger. |

Labeled as 'classic' or 'classical'
Round hole
1/8 approx phone jack
headstock slotted with a traditional style top end to it, not the shovel shaped end.
If it's like the Epiphone, they didn't keep any good records during the 80's to speak of and dating is mostly by description. Even then getting within 5 years is astounding |

Location: Tennessee | This could very well be on of the original Applause that were made (in Mooseup, CT?) in the US. If so, the s/n would be valid for US models and place it the late 70's. Does this sound about the right vintage?
What are the issues with the top? If they're just lacquer cracks, you might not need to do anything. |

Location: Illinois | The issue with the top is that the bridge is pulling away from the sound board ala, "Someone forgot and left it in the car in late july in arizona... oops?!?" or something like that. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I can't see that as even worth $50. Some here might disagree, but if you want a decent sounding guitar for $100 or less, look at a Montana, which is a Korean guitar imported by Kaman. Most seem to have solid spruce tops and rosewood or mahogany sides. I've only played one that was labeled Monterey on the headstock and it sounded very good and played well. Not a classical guitar, though. |
