I must say I don't really know much about the Adamas line. Why are slotheads so high dollar? Are they rare because only a few were made.
Thanks!

I followed them all over the Gulf Coast during the summer tours in '78 & '79
...man, did I have a crush on Nancy back then :D
Yes, with only 33 made, that in and of itself makes them rare. |

Location: SoCal | There may be several other for sale out there. A lot of interest in these. No sale may mean that they are overpriced.
Back in 12/04, we suffered through Hector's -7 slothead eBay auctions...if you weren't here, search "hector" in the "For Sale". I believe he was trying to get $12,000.
Serge won the eBay auction with a high bid of $5,000. Hector refused to honor the auction. Believe he eventually sold it in a private sale. Rumor that it went for about $7,500. Problem with valuation on these rare birds is that most of the sales have been private and the actual amount is unknown.
In addition, what makes this interesting is that we have the factory coming out with # 47 (acoustic) and the OFC (-8, a/e) for a lot less than the asking prices of the originals.
Is a reissue the same as the original? As far as playability, quality, and "voice", probably. However, for some...no. They won't be satisfied until they have one of the few originals.
As this is an eBay auction, we can all see if the seller gets his reserve or more. A benefit of this offer is that we will have something of a benchmark.
There are postings on the 1942 Martin D-45. Bidding is already a lot higher than a similar new D-45 even thought there is damage to the 1942 guitar. |

Not necessarily.
Just means that (as of yet) nobody's "pony-ed up" to an asking price (with the exception of the "HectorDebacle").
I'm sure the re-issues'll be nice.
(but personally, I think it'll be somewhat impossible to recapture/recreate the "MoJo" that went into the originals - btw, there were 34)
Spend enough money, you can get a really NICE recreation of a FrankLloydWright home (with 21stCentury amenities), . . but (even with all the "flaws") there's something about one of the "Originals" . . .
This guitar came from the same music store that mine did. I hope Steve gets what he wants for it.
(GoSerge! ;) )
Kinda' wish I was gonna "be around" t'see the outcome of this one . . . . |

That said the reissue can be a great way to get real close to what the originals offered. On the other hand the originals are now 30 years old and no matter how hard you try you can't relic that. I suspect that the reissue will also be better workmanship wise (which for the guy that wants "the original vibe" is not a good thing).
Be interesting to see where this winds up price wise.
Cliff, We'll let you know, go enjoy the cruze. Have one for me! |

It will be interesting though to see how these stack up after about three years of playing. Will they have the mojo! (Or do they now!) Has anyone been able to compare them? And who will report in three years? |

This will be an interesting auction. I know that there are a small handfull of OFC'ers that don't have the price barrier/SWMBO effect that the host of us Dreamers have. I wouldn't know how to play $10K worth of guitar anyway. I hope to see Serge, Tony, Stephen, Stone, Fugot or (?) from the OFC get her!
To Dream, perchance to bid! |

FROM STEVE:
I had no idea my Adamas Slothead would cause such a stir! I'd like to be able to log onto OFC to participate in the discussion but the server gods
seem to be conspiring against me - I've been unable to get a password despite having registered a few days ago!
Anyhow, this baby is even more beautiful in person than the pictures do justice and I've been torn as to whether to let it go. But frankly I simply have WAY too many guitars and not enough time.
Feel free if you have any questions to email me directly at stevevaus@cox.net.
However if your question is about the reserve price, that's not something I'm willing to discuss. I wouldn't want to take the fun out of it for everyone. Suffice it to say, based on all of my research and brain picking, the reserve price is not in the stratosphere but it won't go cheap either.
I am under no pressure to sell, and if it ends out in my collection for a while longer I wouldn't be heartbroken.
Until I get my password I'll be continuing to watch the discussions - happy to know I've given y'all something to talk about for the next 6 days.

only thing special about the case was the extra room for the volume and tone knobs!"

Added by edit: Also, if you're a Heart fan, check out the endorsement ad Nancy is doing in the electric magazines for the Epiphone Les Paul Ultra the last couple of months. I understand she advised Gibson on the features of this guitar (slim neck, narrow nut, light chambered body).

Some of you have a better understanding of divorce than I do. Thought this might help, Mark...
divorce1) n. the termination of a marriage by legal action, requiring a petition or complaint for divorce (or dissolution in some states, including California) by one party. Some states still require at least a minimal showing of fault, but no-fault divorce is now the rule in which "incompatibility" is sufficient to grant a divorce. The substantive issues in divorces are division of property, child custody and support, alimony (spousal support), child visitation and attorney's fees. Only state courts have jurisdiction over divorces, so the petitioning or complaining party can only file in the state in which he/she is and has been a resident for a period of time (as little as six weeks in Nevada). In most states the period from original filing for divorce, serving the petition on the other party and final judgment (or decree) takes several months to allow for a chance to reconcile. |

Problem with the a/c I flew (RF-4B) is that all we had was side looking radar, infrared, low level panoramic and high altitude cameras. Could scare the heck out of them at 200 feet. We did that to some of the Soviet trawlers (you know, the ones with all of the antennae and no nets in the water). |

iv177, no sales/purchases since signing up on 6/11/03. If I am skeptical and defaming a legit buyer, my apologies. Just suspect that if a zero feedback bidder ends up winning, it will be relisted for non-pay.
Understand playing around, positioning around $7,000-8,000 but I am a little surprised that there would be this must bidding so far out.
Serious bidding won't occur 'till the last few minutes. |

This email actually came to me from a good friend who happens to also be a slothead owner.
"$10k is a lot of money to spend on a trophy. You could buy some really nice Martin's for that price."
You gotta love that ... |

Go Dave!!
I wish Steve would just end it early, and let Dave have it. he could save himself allot of scratch in Ebay fees, and Dave is one to be trusted even more than his perfect feedback rating. There's no risk for him. in fact, he should've listed it here first IMHO. |

You want this one, you need it and you know it!
No more Cliff's "Little Buddy" for you! You need this in your collection to justify year's of aquisitions of the pristine and misunderstood. how you going to feel at 5pm Mountain time today if you don't have it!
Everybody and anybody can collect this Martin and that Martin but how many get a shot at being the second owner of one like this?
Now buck up and get ready for the last five minutes of this auction! It'll hurt a little but it'll be worth it!

He emails me this morning asking if he can buy my Adamas II Slothead. So I figure that's like money in the bank. Woz and Serge are also picking over the soon-to-be dead mans collection for bargins. So I'm sitting here dumb and happy thinking that I may actually have a half-way believable story to pitch to Mrs. Standingovation. Now this ??? From a friend ???
Well, All is cool as long as it ends up in the "family". I'm heading to a staff meeting and then off to the airport right now so I'll find out how things end up later tonight from the left coast. Need to drop off Pokeypups new guitar at FedEx on the way. Good luck Mike (although I secretly hate you).

I was serious about your adamas II, but then I read your post earlier in this thread.
As I recall you said "CRAP. As soon as I got outbid I placed an order for an HD-28VS. I see BIG problems on the horizon ..."
So I check my brand new credit cards and figure out I have enough to make a run. It's paying off the credit cards that will be the trick. peace mike |

Sorry to say I was rooting for Dave for purely selfish reasons. I thought he might pick it up on his way back from San Jose and have it when I visit him on Saturday. I don't know if I'd dare play it, but it would be nice to just get close to one. |

I've played about 4-5 original slotheads. They are great guitars, but they are just guitars. They are meant to be picked up and played.
Please note that I didn't use the word "gosh" one time in the message above.
This should be marked by Ovation as a banner day. This is the first time, on the resale market, that an Ovation has sold for more than $10K. Pretty impressive. |

I try to play at least half of my Os every day. I look forward to having so many that I need to retire in order to have the time to do that.
I wasn't sure if Dave would want my paws on his new baby, but I was sure planning on it. I also appreciate listening to the sound of a good guitar played by someone good. I don't get that much by myself. |

Hey nice grab Mike. No hard feelings. I see you made a last second "cover your ass" bid. Afraid Mrs. Standingovation was going to snipe? Sure I would have liked to have won it but, but I'm just as happy for you and really glad we kept another one in the family.
My gut feeling is that now the 10k barrier has been cracked (and buyers willing to pony) you may see a few more shake loose. Heck I remember a few years ago Cliff telling me "10 grand and she's yours". We'll see what the future holds. Anyway, good luck with your new addition. By the way for those who have not noticed, Mike has put together one hell of a vintage collection. We're all proud of you.
As for me? Well life isn't so bad. Check my other thread for a description of the Slothead Consolation Prize.
All the best, Dave |

And if you pay with PayPal double that.
What I thought was rather sureal was listing standard UPS ground when:
1 - It would be overnight expressed or picked up in person! Three days in a truck next to an engine block? I don't think so!
2 - for a $10K item just offer free shipping! |

On the bright side, upon my return home I would have probably fond that the locks had been changed and my guitars, wedding photos and dirty laundry were sitting out in the driveway.

Once the locks were changed he wouldn't know the guitars were missing until the semi that I'd have to hire to haul them to Boise was long gone. Dave must have a big driveway if all his guitars could fit in it. My wife was actually thinking about stopping by just to see the house where the guy who bid $10,000 for a guitar lives. |
