You can screw up an anvil if you try hard enough. |

Location: Orange County, California | TTen had one of Al's Adamas with a finish flaw in. It was much more minor than this one. I palyed it and can say it absolutey did not effect the sound or playability. If you want the textured top sound on a Celebrity budget, Jump on this one!
Edit: Never mind this one. Buy one from Al. His are in much better condition!
Al, how bad do they have to be before they're considered "un-sellable" ? |

Or it's kinda like baking a cake when the top caves in.
Or could it be an after affect from another process, and rather than scap em, sell for a hefty cut in price. |

It is not flawless, it looks like someone walked on it. |

Location: New Hampsha | I have a hard time swallowing that this is a finish flaw. Are the Adamas tops made like a boat in a reverse mold, so that flaws are not visible until after the part is popped? And like Texbaz says, why would the factory bother to complete a guitar having such a grotesque flaw? Having a small resin-starved spot like some of the guitars that Al has is one thing - but this one looks hideous! |

Why the debate? |

Location: SoCal | Call me cynical, but just because a seller calls them finish flaws, unless I have more information to go on, I'm not going to believe it. Al, maybe you know this guy personally (I went back and looked at the auction -- if it had been you, Al, selling, then I would have believed what was written), and if so, then I'll back off my stand.
But this is a pretty silly thing to fight over..... |

Location: Orange County, California | I saw TTen's up close and personal. the "finish flaws" look like something touched the top when resin was still soft and some of it came off the weave. Just on the surface mind you. it looked awful, but had NO affect structurally or acoustically. Although this example looks really bad, I bet it sounds as good as any other textued top. Also, looking like it does might put off any would-be guitar thieves.... |

But this is a pretty silly thing to fight over..... [/QB] yes paul especially when I have WAY more experience with these Adamas guitars than maybe anyone else outside of the factory |

| I'm curious if the factory would have a remedy for repairing/restoring the finish? That, and having electronics installed might make for a good investment.(?) |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Maybe EVERY textured top adamas looks like this if you take the paint off!
Notice that this isn't a typical "burst" of one color in the middle and another (darker or lighter) color around the edge. This one has been painted red around the edge but is "bare" in the middle. I think if you just had the factory repaint the whole thing a solid color you would not see the defects.

With Al citing his expertise, I'm withdrawing from this discussion. While I don't automatically trust the person with the auction, I do trust Al. |

I did get my hands on one of Al's blem's a couple of years ago. Mine looks like milk drops on the blue color. As for feel, sound, it is one of my best. In fact it was bought for my son to take to school. He loves it. I never get to play it anymore. The one Al sold me had the optima and XLR.
If the seller isn't playing hide and seek. Great player for not a lot of money.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Sorry, I'm all out of Krylon. I did my new HD28VS. It was a little bit of a mess because Martins don't technically have a "hatch" to paint. So I thought I would just remove the strings and reach inside wiht the spray can and paint a white circle about 6 inches diameter to simulate the effect. Unfortunately the braces got in the way and started splattering paint everywhere inside the guitar. So I got out the sabre saw and cut a 6" hole through the back of the guitar. Ever notice how nice rosewood smells when you cut it? Anyway, my calculations were pretty good and I only cut in to three braces. With this new improved access to the inside of the guitar I decided to go aherad and paint the entire inside white. Jeff had commented how his Tak classical was gloss finished on the inside so I thought the krylon might give the same effect. Everything went OK, except I forgot to cover the sound hole and I got a little overshoot out on the face of the guitar near the rosette. I'll have to sand that off. I reattached the wood from the hole I had cut using some velcro strips just temporarily until I figure out how to do a better fix. I restrung her and not surprisingly the sound is definately improved vs. the stock configuration. I really glad I did it. I must admit, however that the guitar is a little freaky to look at when all you see inside the sound hole is white. It's kind of like looking at Julia Roberts smile - a pretty face with a big white hole in the middle of it. Dave |
