"We busked around the market towns
And picked fruit down in Kent
And we could tinker lamps and pots
And knives wherever we went

And I said that we might settle down
Get a few acres dug
Fire burning in the hearth
And babies on the rug

She said O man, you foolish man
It surely sounds like hell
You might be lord of half the world
You'll not own me as well"

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away
She was a lost child
She was running wild, she said
As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay
And you wouldn't want me any other way"

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices
The contrast of white on white.
And in between the moon and you
Angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.
And I walk in the air between the rain
Through myself and back again
Where? I don't know.
Maria says she's dying
Through the door, I hear her crying
Why? I don't know.

Round here we're carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she's slipping though my hands.

Yeah, I think all their albums are steller. Adam Duritz ranks right up with any of the best writers IMHO. Saw them first when they opened for Dylan in '92, before they released their first album. They play a lot here in Northern California in small venues and they are a great band to see live. They have a policy of doing all their new material live before they record them ... AD talked about it during a show and said they can hone their songs if by getting audience feedback and they can tweak their songs before they record them. Then they rent a house (usually in the Hollywood Hills these days) and then all live in the house and record there, rather than in studio.

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

Now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky, the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart

You wander down the land and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the STARDUST of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend the lonely night
Dreaming of a time
The memory haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new

And each kiss, an inspiration
Oh, but that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his faerietale
Of paradise where roses grow

Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My starddust reverie
The memory of loves refrain

Hoagy Carmichael

The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
And emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth

And tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

(And I'll throw another vote in for Counting Crows as well - great stuff)

And another that I like a lot:

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I've got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then You make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what You got
When all You've got is hurt

A man conceived a moment’s answers to the dream,
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes.
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim,
A movement regained and regarded both the same,
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you.

"Well the first days are the hardest days
Don't you worry any more
'Cause when life looks like easy street
There is danger at your door
Think this through with me
Let me know your mind
Wo oh, what I want to know
Is are you kind?" (Jerry Garcia)

"Lately I've been talking in my sleep,
I can't imagine what I'd have to say" (Eric Clapton)

"I'm a-thinkin' and a-wonderin' all the way down the road,
I once loved a woman, a child I am told,
I'd give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's alright."
(Robert Zimmerman)

Pinstripe Suit
by Cigar Store Indians

Chorus:
He's just a pinstripe suit
No hat, no cowboy boot
No scar from the life he lives
His money, that's all he is
I'm like your faded jeans
A little rough around the seams
I'm torn but I still fit you
A lot better than a pinstripe suit

Help me Lord, my baby's gettin' bored
She's been looking at white collared men
With a college degree they shake the money tree
It's hard to compete with them
In my pickup truck, I'm a sittin' duck
Here comes heartache tuggin' on me
Before you run, let me tell you hon
How I see things...

You used to to say that you and me
were cut from the same cloth
That our long walks and midnight talks
Was all you'd ever want
So go ahead and make your day
And kiss the dollar bill
But don't come back from the money shack
Looking for something real...

Fairport Convention Lyrics

Who Knows Where the Time Goes

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

When you consider the words of man:

"I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then"
B.S.

Lately for me it's been the words of Todd Agnew in Fragile Breath that awe me:
I searched the world for a song that I could sing
Praise to my King, A gift that I could bring
But no music I found could compare to You
Not one could do Justice to Your glory
What are my songs compared to Yours

CHORUS:
You speak with thunder and lightening
Your voice shakes the mountains
The foundations of the earth
All I can offer is this fragile breath
With each one I'll praise You
With each one I'll praise You more

I searched the world for a poem I could read
A rhyme that would bring Glory to my King
But no writing I found was worthy of
This God high above all other gods
What are my words compared to Yours

CHORUS

My Dad beat me 'cause mine said "Mother".
But my Mother naturaly liked it...and beat my brother.
'Cause his tatoo was was a lady in the nude
And my Mother thought that was extremly rude...

Why to I have to be different than I am
Just to earn the respect of a dancehall friend
And have the same old row, again and again

And why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around
I work myself to death...just to fit in.

A silly one I always liked is:

Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie.
Cross my I promise that its true.
I've been in love so many times before.
but never with a girl like you.

Well..... as long as we're quoting classics...

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Hold me my daddy,
I never felt lower than dirt on the floor.
I say hold me my daddy,
I never felt like crying oceans before.
This civil war, why are we in it?
Might’ve fired off a couple of rounds, I didn’t mean to begin it.
If these are the bullets that every father and son must chew,
Well then hold me my daddy, I forgot to say I love you.

Hold me my daddy,
It hurts me to see grown men fighting this way.
I say hold me my daddy,
The young and the old dog aren’t having their day.

This civil war, why are we in it?
There’s nobody on this flat earth, would ever want to win it.
If these are the hot coals that every father and son walks through,
Well then hold me my daddy, I forgot to say I love you.

And if you agree we can make amends.
All this squabbling I’ve hated.
In another time and another place where our history bends,
We could’ve been the best of friends and not merely related.

Well these are the right words to say,
They’re difficult but still true,
Well then hold me my daddy,
I forgot to say I love you.

(hold him. tight. hold him like he was a baby.)

Woke up this morning put on my slippers
Walked in the kitchen and died
And oh what a feeling! When my soul went thru the ceiling
And on up into heaven I did ride
When I got there they did say, John, it happened this way
You slipped upon the floor and hit your head
And all the angels say just before you passed away
These were the very last words that you said:

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box just get em out of here
Venus de milo can have my arms - Look out! I’ve got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman and give my love to Rose

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size

Give my feet to the footloose careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy don’t pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane it’s a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south and kiss my ass goodbye

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size

He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what the please

He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola
He say "I know you, you know me"
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me

He bag production he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me

He roller-coaster he got early warning
He got muddy water he one mojo filter
He say "One and one and one is three"
Got to be good-looking 'cause he's so hard to see
Come together right now over me

Now these are some inspired lyrics.....waiter I'll have some of what he is having.

I smoke two joints in the morning
I smoke two joints at night
I smoke two joints in the afternoon
It makes me feel all right
I smoke two joints in time of peace
And two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints
And then I smoke two more

My mama she once told me
son you be hard working man
My daddy he once told me
son you do the best you can
But then one day I met a man
who came to me and said
Hard work good and hard work fine
But first take care of head

That's why
I smoke two joints when I get up
In the car I smoke two joints
I smoke two joints when I play video games
And at every ten thousand points, I smoke two joints
I smoke two joints in time of peace
And two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints
And then I smoke two more
Smoke two joints

I've had my share of broken dreams,
And more than a couple of falls,
And in chasin what I thought were moonbeams,
I have run into a couple of walls,
And in lookin back at the faces I've been,
I would sure be the first one to say,
When I look at myself today,
I wouldn't a done it any other way.

She kisses the boy and she turns out the light
And there's only the sound of the wind
She thinks of the man who calls them sometimes
She's glad that he is their friend
Too old to dream, too young not to hope
The more that she's seen the more she lets go

And the sun goes down on the river
And the night comes up on the field
You don't have to promise me forever
Just be with me as long as it's real
Be with me as long as it's real

He asks himself as he lays down to sleep
Can he raise another man's son
And give the woman the strength that she needs
It's something that he's never done
She's not like the girls who once made life so sweet
She just sees the man that he dreamed he could be

And the sun goes down on the river
And the night comes up on the field
You don't have to promise me forever
Just be with me as long as it's real
Be with me as long as it's real

Oh they told us fairytales come true
Then they told us to beware
And then they told us believers are the fools
Ah but I still care

The lights go out all up the coast
And he turns his back to the chill
The thought of her follows him just like a ghost
And he knows now that it always will
Til there comes a day when he doesn't care why
Til they find their way to each others sides

And the sun goes down on the river
And the night comes up on the field
You don't have to promise me forever
Just be with me as long as it's real
Be with me as long as it's real
Be with me as long as it's real

Edna million in a drop dead suit
Dutch pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won’t shoot
I’m in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man’s chest
And I’ve been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I’m full of bourbon, I can’t stand up

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Schiffer broke a bottle on morgan’s head
And I’m stepping on the devil’s tail
Across the stripes of a full moon’s head
And through the bars of a cuban jail
Bloody fingers on a purple knife
Flamingo drinking from a cocktail glass
I’m on the lawn with someone else’s wife
Admire the view from up on top of the mast

Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

I said hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

Yellow sheets on a hong kong bed
Stazybo horn and a slingerland ride
To the carnival is what she said
A hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna million in a drop dead suit
Dutch pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won’t shoot
I’m in the corner on the pouring rain

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Jockey full of bourbon

 ...

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

...And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

The Crows, rock!!

I am made from the dust of the stars
And the oceans flow in my veins
Here I hide in the heart of the city
Like a stranger coming out of the rain

The evening plane rises up from the runway
Over constellations of light
I look down into a million houses
And wonder what you're doing tonight

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd make everything all right

I'm not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second sight
I'm not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight

I had a dream of a winter garden
A midnight rendezvous
Silver, blue and frozen silence
What a fool I was for you

I had a dream of the open water
I was swimming away out to sea
So deep I could never touch bottom
What a fool I used to be

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd set everybody free

I'm not one to believe in magic
Though my memory has a second sight
I'm not one to go pointing my finger
When I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just improvising
My illusion of careless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just sympathizing
My illusions a harmless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

from "Presto" by Rush

Too bad that most of Rush's music seem weak compared to the lyrics written by Neil Peart (with a few exceptions of course).

Anything you want to know, it should be perfectly clear.
You see just beneath the surface of the mud,
There's more mud here...
Surprise.

Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
And you crawl out of bed and you crawl out of bed
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
And you look at the moon where the window is
And the stars shine, and the stars shine, and the stars shine
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And way down below in the sun belt
And the telephones, and the telephone, and the telephones
And you look out the moon where the window is
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And some of us breathe in the brown ground
Where the worms clown, where the worms clown, where the worms clown
Way down below in the sun belt
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And every night when you lay down
You fall flat, you fall flat, you fall flat
Some of us breathe in the brown ground
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

So we're asleep in the same dream
In the snort fort, the snort fort, the snort fort
And every night when you lay down
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

Santa Claus modified snow peas
On the sun roofs, on the sun roofs, on the sun roofs
So we're asleep in the same dream
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

If you look in the mirror it's your father's face
And the thin grin, the thin grin, the thin grin
It's Santa Claus pulling up snow peas
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And there's tears in the bank and the credit card
In the back yard, in the back yard, in the back yard
If you look in the mirror it's your father's face
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And once in a while when the wind blows
And the heart winds, and the heart winds, and the heart winds
There's tears in the bank and a credit card
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

But there's lint in the pocket and a breath mint
Or a car key, or a car key, or a car key
Once in a while when the wind blows
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And your kid has a face like a walnut
From the ice cream, from the ice cream, from the ice cream
But there's lint in the pocket and a breath mint
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

It all began when I went on a tour
hoping to find some furniture
followed a sign saying beutiful chest
led to a lady who showed me her best
I was taken by surprise when I quickly closed my eyes
so she rang the bell and quick as hell

You can tell the world,
you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes when I'm gone
Or you can tell your friends,
just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone

You can tell my arms,
to go back on the farm
You can tell my feet to hit the floor
Or you can tell my lips,
to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

But don't tell my heart,
My achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart,
My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Oooooooooo

You can tell your ma,
I moved to Arkansas
Or you can tell your dog to bite my leg
Or tell your brother Cliff, :D
who's fist can tell my lips
He never really liked me anyway

Oh tell your Aunt Louise,
tell anything you please
Myself already knows that I'm okay
Oh you can tell my eyes,
to watch out for my mind
It might be walking out on me today

But don't tell my heart,
My achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart,
My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Oooooooooo

But don't tell my heart,
My achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart,

There's no love like your love,
and no other could give more love.
There's no air unless you're there,
all the time; all the way.

I would fight for you,
I'd lie for you,
Walk the wire for you,
Yeah, I'd die for you.

You know it's true,
everything I do,
I do it for you.

How's that for a classic!

Hello, baby hello
Haven't seen your face for a while
Have you quit doing time for me
Or are you still the same spoiled child

Hello, I said hello
Is this the only place you thought to go
Am I the only man you ever had
Or am I just the last surviving friend that you know

Harmony and me
We're pretty good company
Looking for an island
In our boat upon the sea
Harmony, gee i really love you
And i want to love you forever
And dream of the never, never, never leaving harmony

Hello, baby hello
Open up your heart and let your feelings flow
You're not unlucky knowing me
Keeping the speed real slow
In any case i set my own pace
By stealing the show, say hello, hello

We're pretty good company
Looking for an island
In our boat upon the sea
Harmony, gee i really love you
And i want to love you forever
And dream of the never, never, never leaving harmony...

And now that it's all over
The birds can nest again
I'll only snow when the sun comes out
I'll shine only when it starts to rain

And if you want a drink
Just squeeze my hand
And wine will flow into the land
And feed my lambs

For I am a mirror
I can reflect the moon
I will write songs for you
I'll be your silver spoon

I'm sorry I took your time
I am the poem that doesn't rhyme
Just turn back a page
I'll waste away, I'll waste away
I'll waste away, I'll waste away
I'll waste away, I'll waste away

Her hair is black.
It's the length of her back.
As she turns around, she smiles.
She gives a wink
to make me think
She knows I've been watching her for awhile.

I like it but then I wrote it.

It took the hand of God Almighty
To part the waters of the sea
But it only took one little lie
To separate you and me
Oh, we are not as strong as we think we are

And they say that one day Joshua
Made the sun stand still in the sky
But I can't even keep these thoughts of you from passing by
Oh, we are not as strong as we think we are

We are frail, we are fearfully and wonderfully made
Forged in the fires of human passion
Choking on the fumes of selfish rage
And with these our hells and our heavens
So few inches apart
We must be awfully small,
And not as strong as we think we are

And the Master said their faith was
Gonna make them mountains move
But me, I tremble like a hill on a fault line
Just at the thought of how I lost you
Oh, we are not as strong as we think we are

And if you make me laugh,
I know I could make you like me
'Cause when I laugh I can be a lot of fun
But when we can't do that I know that it is fright'ning
What I don't know is why we can't hold on,
We can't hold on.

When you love you walk on the water,
Just don't stumble on the waves.
We all want to go there somethin' awful,
But to stand there it takes some grace,
'Cause oh, we are not as strong
As we think we are

A man sits down to write a letter, but instead he writes a book
The book begins -
Dear Sir, I don't know if you're interested but you're wife is a whore

A man gets on a train and proceeds to take all his clothes off
He begins to play with himself, and he says
"In my country, this is definitely not offensive"

A man pours petrol through his neighbour's letterbox
And throws in a match
The house is engulfed in flames
As the neighbours jump from the upstairs window
He films the whole thing on video
He plays it back to them later in hospital
"Things have been pretty dull at home without you" he says

A man pushes a lawn mower two hundred miles on his knees
To the tomb of the unknown gardener
"Great one" he cries "I've done my penance. I bring my offering.
Grant me, grant me, grant me, pest-free roses"

Psycho Street, friendly people down on Psycho Street
Good neighbours down on Psycho Street
And if you need a hand, need a friend, we understand
And if you need a pal, we'll be there, anyhow
Psycho Street, Psycho Street, Psycho Street

A man stakes his neighbour's cat to the barbecue and turns on the gas
"Now are you going to talk" he says
"Or am I going to have to get nasty?"

A man has an inflatable doll made
That looks exactly like his wife
He murders his wife, dissolves her body in acid
And marries the doll
Three years later, he leaves her for another doll

A man hands his son a brick and says
"Son, throw this brick through the greenhouse next door"
The boy does
The boy next door throws one back
It hits the man on the head and mortally wounds him
"Ah well" he says, as his life blood trickles away
"Boys will be boys"

A thoughtful woman sends her best friend a parcel
Inside, it says, is a free sample, full body beauty treatment
But really it contains acids and chemicals
When her friend tries it, her hair falls out,
Her face is wrinkled and her body scarred
The thoughtful woman turns to her husband and winks
And says "Pre-emptive strike"

Psycho Street, friendly people down on Psycho Street
Good neighbours down on Psycho Street
If you need a hand, need a friend, we understand
And if you need a pal, we'll be there, anyhow
Oh Psycho Street, Psycho Street, Psycho Street
Psycho Street, Psycho Street, Psycho Street

Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent

Snot is running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey Aqualung

Lying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run.
Hey Aqualung

Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Hey Aqualung...

Did you ever think, when you eat Chinese
It ain't pork or chicken but a fat Siamese?
Yet the food tastes great, so you don’t complain.
But that’s not chicken in your chicken chow mein.
Seems to me I ordered sweet-and-sour pork
But Garfield’s on my fork.
He’s purrin’ here on my fork.

CHORUS
There’s a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon
The place that I eat every day at noon.
They can feed you cat and you’ll never know
Once they wrap it up in dough, boy.
They fry it real crisp in dough.

Chou Lin asked if I wanted more
As he was dialin’ up his buddy at the old pet store.
I said "Not today. I lost my appetite.
There’s two cats in my belly and they want to fight."
I was suckin’ on a Rolaid and a Tums or two
When I swear I heard it mew, boys.
And that is when I knew.

CHORUS
There’s a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon
I think I gotta stop eatin’ there at noon.
They say that it’s beef or fish or pork
But it’s purrin’ there on my fork.
There’s a hair-ball on my fork.

I think that there's a problem here,
my voice just don't sond right.
I left myself on the answering machine
said; "I'm back in town tonight".

I feel a step out of the wilderness
All squint-eyed and confused...
But even babies raised by wolves'd know
exactly when they've been used.

See when it starts to fall apart,
Man, it really falls apart.
Like boots and hearts, oh when they start,
They really fall apart.

Fingers and toes, fingers and toes,
Are forty things we share, forty-one

(chorus)
We're all gonna die someday, Lord
We're all gonna die someday
Mama's on pills, daddy's over the hill
But we're all gonna die someday

It's hurts down here on earth, Lord
It's hurts down here on earth
It's hurtin down here cause we're runnin outta beer
but we're all gonna die someday

(repeat chorus)

All of my friends are stoned, Lord
All of my friends are stoned
Janie got stoned cause she could't get boned
but we're all gonna die someday

(repeat chorus)

drivin all day, we both said nothing
you had your face in a magazine
i tuned in to the oldies sation
got blew away in a time machine
this world is so amazing
the sun is shinin and it's rainin too
i waited all my life for you

i don't mind sometimes not talkin
sometimes there aint a thing to say
anyway i know what your thinkin and
i kinda like it when you think that way
think i'll just keep on drivin
anywhere will do
i waited all my life for you

(chorus)
all my life, i knew you were out there
all my life i knew, you were waitin somewhere

some people tell you everything they're thinkin
say yes they will and then they never do
i never have to ask you to speak up
every word you say is true
say you'll be mine forever
never leave me blue
i waited all my life for you

(repeat chorus)

I forgot to add this verse to the first song...

they can all kiss my ass
they can all kiss my ass
but if they're gonna kiss my ass they better come and do it fast cause we're all gonna die someday

-Casey Chambers

I try not to use this kind of language in real life :) ....well most of the time....well....some of the time!

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, and drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, and drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut,
Called the doctor, woke him up, and said,
"Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?"

"Now let me get this straight;
You put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
You put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
You put the lime in the coconut,
called your doctor, woke him up, and said,
'Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?'

You put the lime in the coconut, and drink them both down,
You put the lime in the cocount, you're such a silly woman!
Put the lime in the coconut, and drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning.

Rattle Big Black Bones
in the Danger zone
there's a rumblin' groan
down below
there's a big dark town
it's a place I've found
there's a world going on
UNDERGROUND
they're alive, they're awake
while the rest of the world is asleep
below the mine shaft roads
it will all unfold
there's a world going on
UNDERGROUND
all the roots hang down
swing from town to town
they are marching around
down under your boots
all the trucks unload
beyond the gopher holes
there's a world going on
UNDERGROUND

the album "Swordfishtrombones"

Walkin' down by the golf course
Watchin' the golfers golf
Watchin' them hit them golf balls
They're ridin' in their golf carts

Mr. Jones shot an eagle
Mr. Smith shot a par
Mr. Green shot a bogey
He's down drinking in the clubhouse bar

I'll never be no caddie
Totin' another man's bag
No I'll never be no caddie
Wavin' another man's flag

Watch out for that sand trap
Wear your golfin' shoes
Watch out for that frog pond
Watch out for them golfin' blues

And in the end....
The love you take....
Is equal to the love...
You make.
.
What a way for the Beatles to conclude the last track of their last album.

I'm liking this thread a lot... but for the uninformed (including me) maybe we should include artist references?

I'm going back now to edit mine....

I'm sorry, Brad. Really, I am. It's an compulsive thing, I guess. I was much to into these things when they were happening.

'Most' of "Let It Be" was recorded before the "Abbey Road" sessions, for a documentary film of them recording 'live' in the studio, originally titled "Get Back" (an attempt to recreate the live feeling).
Unfortunately the 'studio' was a Twickenham film studio sound stage, which was huge, cold, and they all hated. Throw into the mix the fact that there was a lot of infighting going on and Yoko attended (the first spouse to do so) it wasn't a great situation.
The film got shelved along with most of the tracks until after "Abbey Road" is completed.

It could even be argued that "Abbey Road" was thier 3rd to last album, considering the "Hey Jude" album had material recorded during the "Abbey Road" sessions, but was released after.

01/02/69 Start of 'Let It Be' rehearsal sessions (filmed).
01/16/69 End of 'let It Be' rehearsal sessions.
01/20/69 'Let It Be' shooting moves to a new studio at Apple.

Sometime in early 02/69 Paul convinces George Martin to produce an album 'the way we used to do it'.

02/22/69 Start of 'Abbey Road' sessions.
08/26/69 End of 'Abbey Road' sessions.
10/01/69 US Release of 'Abbey Road'.
01/03/70 Studio work resumes on 'Let It Be'. 'I Me Mine' last song recorded by the Beatles.
02/26/70 US release of "Hey Jude" lp.
04/02/70 Mixing completed on 'Let It Be'.
05/13/70 World premier of 'Let It Be' in New York.
05/18/70 US release of 'Let It Be' lp.

I'm sorry. It's a sickness, really it is. I am to be pitied.

EDIT: I would defintely agree that "Abbey Road" should be remembered as the Beatles final album. While the "Let It Be" sessions were riddled with accusations, bad feelings and general disgust with the whole situation (very obvious in the film), everything I've read about the "Abbey Road" sessions truly pictures it as 'the way it used to be' - talented musicians, outstanding songwriting, amazing production, cooperation... everything that made them great in the first place.

If your knowledge of the Mozart canon was this good, no one would think to criticize! Why appologize for knowing all you can about the most influencial music of our age?

Maybe not false humility, but definately unnecessary! ;)

Imagine
John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of men,
imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one..

Something in your voice makes me want to lose myself,
Makes me want to lose myself in your arms.
And something in your eyes makes my heart beat fast.
I hope this feeling lasts the rest of my life.

If you knew how lonely my life has been,
And how low I’ve felt for so long.
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along,
And change my world the way that you’ve done…

Feels like home to me, like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I came from.
Feels like home to me, like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I belong.

A window breaks down a long dark street,
And a siren wails in the night.
But I’m all right, because you are here with me.
I can almost see, through the dark there’s a light.

If you knew how much this moment means to me,
And how long I’ve waited for your touch.
If you knew how happy you are making me…
I never thought I’d love anyone this much.

Feels like home to me, like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I came from.
Feels like home to me, like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I belong.

If you knew how lonely my life has been,
And how low I’ve felt for so long.
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along,
And change my world the way that you’ve done…

Feels Like Home, Randy Newman.

I challenge anyone to hear Bonnie Raitt's version of that and not be moved. My favourite crying song of all time!

I was up the road on easy street
Watching everybody stand around and cheat
A man comes up and says, "Move along
Down to the corner where you belong"
But mama just wants to barrelhouse all night long

I hear the city singing like a siren choir
Some fool tried to set this town on fire
TV preacher screams "come on along"
I feel like Fay Wray face to face with King Kong
But mama just wants to barrelhouse all night long

Sometimes I wonder what I am
I feel like I'm living in a hologram
It doesn't seem to matter what's right or wrong
Everybody's grabbing and coming on strong
But mama just wants to barrelhouse all night long

Look away across the bay
Yankee gunboat come this way
Uncle Sam gonna save the day
Come tomorrow we all gonna pay...

And it's burn baby burn
When am I going to get my turn

Something dead under the bed
Local diplomats hang their heads
Never mind what the government said
They're either lying or they've been misled...

And it's burn baby burn
When am I going to get my turn

Phillipines was yesterday
Santiago and Greece today
How would they ever make the late news pay
If they didn't have the CIA?

And it's burn baby burn
When am I going to get my turn

Here it comes, the loaded gun
"Must keep the Commies on the run"
You'd buy or bury everyone
For liberty and life
And just plain fun

And it's burn baby burn
When am I going to get my turn

Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
But I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant so far away from home,
So far away from home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
But it's all right, it's all right
We've lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what went wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassunngly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
But it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest
