I have a small PA that I play through with 2 full range speakers with 10" woofers. They're really monitors but I'm using them as mains. Doesn't have as much bottom end as I would like, and I'm wondering if adding a single subwoofer would be worth while. My amp has a dedicated ouput for one, so I'm considering a passive 18". I just don't know how much effect it would have on an acoustic guitar and would like some advice before I plunk down the dough...

If your speakers are really monitors and don't have as much bottom end as you would like, get some better speakers. 12" woofers would make a big difference.

I agree with Mitchrx. A subwoofer is much more effective for drums and bass. A pair of cabs with 12" or 15" woofers will do the trick.

...one more thing, be sure that your amp has enough power to drive the new speakers properly. Otherwise you can end up with distortion or a blown amp.

I guess that's my real question ...I was hoping to avoid the higher costs of buying 2 speakers as opposed to one.

If you've got a couple of hundred watts coming out of your PA for a passive Sub This might work. Carvin also has Powered Subs, and a really cool 10 day return policy.

Are you doing any gigs with the PA?

Hauling two 12" cabs will be a lot easier than hauling two 10" cabs and an 18" sub-woofer.

That Carvin 18" is $400 w/shipping. You can certainly get two 12" cabs for that or less.

I bought two 12" cabs on eBay for $75.

Peavey makes a sub that can be bought for $239.00 at Music 123 w/free shipping...as for gigging the answer is no... might happen in the future but as my user name implies this is pretty much a hobby for me. I bought the pa so I can hear myself sing when playing electric guitar and I like playing my O plugged in as well.....Two 12" cabs for $75 ? Most of the ones I see want that much just for shipping given the weight..
