I've never picked up a fretless instrument before. There was a Guild fretless acoustic bass at the local GC. I was suprised to find that even with only dot markers on the side of the neck it was still possible to to stay somewhat on pitch. It was fun to play for a while.

How do you get a bass player off the porch???
Pay him for the pizza.

Try play one with no markers. It can be fun on the bass with no frets. The notes sort of smoothly blend. As I always say, no frets no worries.

The only downside of a fretless (and I like the sound anyways) is thet fretwear can become a real problem.

I'd LOVE t'have a fretless bass.
A fretless MagnumII (if such a thing existed) would be my "ultimate" . .

At NAMM, I played a Godin fretless bass that was really nice. I also played the Godin "Glissantar", which is essence was a fretless 11-string guitar. Cool . . but extremely difficult to play chords on. It then occured to me that an Ovation frettless mandocello would be REALLY interesting! . . .

Cliff, you're thinking too much. Fretless bass is cool. After that you have to be a jazz guy, a solo jazz guy.....

". . Cliff, you're thinking too much . ."

Probably the first time anyone's accused me of THAT . . .

Yeah, I know . . . but when I played Noah's mandocello at Moody's, I thought that adding the glissando capabilities would throw some cool "flavors" into it . . . kinda' MiddleEastern . .

. . . okay, . . back to Reality . .

I had a fretless neck built for my Magnum II, maple with a rosewood fingerboard and walnut facing on the headstock, the sound was fat and woody :)
