I know Al is a big fan of the Neumann and I am fishing for his opinion...but any others would also be appreciated....specific to Neumans

KM184 vs TLM103

I can only afford one or the other. Which is the better choice for Home Studio recording and why?

OH, maybe it will help if you know what I currently have in house.

AKG C414BXLII
Blue Baby Bottle
Rode NT1-A
Studio Projects C1
Shure Beta 57

(and possible a Rode NT4 or a set of NT3's or NT5's)

184 small diaphram good for amps overheads drums etc

tlm 103 large diaphram better for vocals but can also be used in other applications.

Thanks Al, sounds like the TLM 103 is more in line with what I should add to the mix.

Al (or anyone), have you noticed a significant difference between cable quality when using 25-50 feet for studio work?

I just wonder if it is worth it to pay and extra 20-30 dollars for the cable when the mics are close to a grand?

I've got to throw this in. I don't record, but I've heard This Mic could put the home studio guy on a budget into the "Pro-Level" recording world. Check out the features and let me know what you guys think. If anyone is getting ready to plunk down money on a new mic, Carvin offers a 10 day no questions asked, trial period/return policy. I think the shipping might be less then the rental fee on a high end mic....

Handmade in Hollywood, CA: Soundelux Microphones.

www.soundeluxmics.com

(dealer list under "buy" on the front page).

Take a look at the U195 which sells for less than $1100.00 or the ifet7 which sells for less than $2100.00. Both are genuine professional made-in-USA studio microphones. Either microphone would be well-suited to vocal use as well as a wide range of instrument uses.

By the way, a pair of Neumann KM184s is great for acoustic guitar; one for the neck, one for the sweet spot on the top.

Fred, that mic looks nice but it appears to be more in line with the Rode NT1-A or the Studio Projects C1.....very nice mics but definately a notch below the newmanns and the soundelux.
