Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum. I've been looking at buying an Ovation 1778 LX (cherry sunburst!) as my second guitar. I've heard them played twice and both times I was totally impressed with the sound. I haven't had the liberty of actually grabbing one to test yet. Based on the design, reputation and sound that I've heard so far they seem great.

My question is... as far as styling - is Ovation the only company that makes a multi-hole acoustic/electric?

Well, of course archtops typically have the classic "f" holes, which I guess is a the original multi-sound hole design.

And one of the new tricks in contemporary luthiery is to cut a sound port in the side of the guitar (on the bass side, facing the player) in order to give the player more sound.

And there are some makers (Tacoma, etc) offering significantly non-symetrical and non-centered sound holes.

You can even get a multihole Martin!

Steps: :) :)

1) Beg, buy, borrow, or steal a Martin
2) Ship it to Willie Nelson and let him beat the hell out of it for 36 years...

Several ripoffs of the Ovation multihole concept as well.

As far as the soundholes go, there are as many different concepts on that as there are guitar makers. Ovation came up with the multi-hole design decades ago for the Adamas series, in order to lighten the bracing on the underside of the guitar top and produce more sound. If you're looking at a 1778, you know the cosmetic appeal already, but definitely make the time to play it. The depth of the tone is awesome, and Ovations (particularly the ones in that price range) simply play like butter.

It's a very different tone from your typical Taylor, Martin, etc, but is absolutely unforgettable, and has never truly been attained by another manufacturer, whether they employ multiple soundholes, offcenter, or traditional ones.

In other words, if you're thinking of getting an Ovation Elite:

DO IT!!!

As far as I know, while Ovation is not the the first to have the off-centered sound hole design, they are the only one I know that incorporate the multi-sound hole design -- most even look great with the epaulets. These days, however, there are knockoffs available out there as well -- most with either recognizable or obscure brand names.
