With the recent postings on stolen guitars, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to dremel tools for engraving on the case, or on the inside of the hatch on my Adamas.

I see there are two types, a regular rotory tool with lot's of attachments, and a specialized engraver. The rotary looks more useful, but can you use it for engraving?

I would go with the "Sharpie" on the underside of the top. Use the serial or a driver's licence number.

Maybe throw a little CWK II in there for future posts!

Just buy a diamond tip scribe (looks like a mechanical pencil), and scratch your name or number on the inside of the hatch door. Dave

Personally, instead of mucking up the inside with a license number or name, I think you're just as well off making a identifiable mark somewhere in the interior that only you know exists.

If you made a mark of two stars with a certain color ink (I wouldn't use black - use something more unique), for example, and you either remember that or make a note of it in your household records somewhere, I'm sure that would hold up to prove it was your property.

I also wouldn't mark the hatch door. I wouldn't put a mark anywhere that a person could easily see.

paint the headstock with Sear's Green Goblin latex paint - no one would steal it in the first place.

Whatever happened to putting the guitar's serial number on your home owner's insurance?

Sad to say, I live in Brooklyn and uglification, whether it's a car, bicycle or guitar ... is not a theft deterrant. Maybe a big chain with spikes ...

This type of technique worked really good for me in my skiing days. Tops were the ugliest thing on the hill day after I bought....scratches and paint.

For marking, I'd want something that would help the honest  pawnbroker or police find me, phone number or ???

I like the Sharpie marker idea. I never really thought about that before. You could just open the access hole and write your name and what ever else you want on the underside of the top. I can just imagine a pawn shop owner or some guitar shop checking out the inside if the thing with a mirror and finding the secret message (:

I'd much rather do that then take an engraver or anything like that to a guitar. The Sharpie on bare wood would probably stay there forever.
