Location: Texas | Ok, so I just got a red GP and several of you were kind enough to inform me on what it was...and I've done a little research on it and just wondered if anyone here has any more info on them other than what is on the web (which isn't that much). Specifially, how do you know if the pickups are Korean knock-offs, and do they sound better/worse than real DiMarzios? I'm sure thats mostly left to personal opinion, but just figured I'd ask.
Mine has Grover tuners (not Schallers like I've seen on some) and a plastic square around the input jack.
In any case, the guitar is one of the best sounding and playing guitars I've ever played aside from feeding back a little when its distorted.
If any other GP owners have any advice for me on these, I'm all ears. ...or eyes rather, because I'll be reading your responses. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | If you haven't already, go to Member Access and do a search of the gallery for Ultra GP. Also check out Miles site on Solidbodies in the Reference section. I think I read that the pickups were "real" DiMarzios, for whatever that's worth. Some like them, some don't. Ovation used Grovers in that era, but don't know if they were original.
I'm from a different generation than you are and could give a rip about Josh Holme, but if you think that the guitar isn't what you need for what you play, please don't start swapping out the pickups or tuners. Someone here would really appreciate that guitar for what it is, rather than what it could be, but it's your great fortune to use as you want. |

Location: Texas | Yeah, I figured I'd get a comment about Josh Homme. I like his music, but could care less that he uses one of these. I actually think it has the most beautiful clean tone I've ever heard and wouldn't dream of changing anything on it. Just for curiousity's sake, I'm trying to get info on the originality and specs of it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get my QOTSA shirt out of the dryer. (Just kidding) |

Location: Cicero, NY | Good point - instead of trying to make it into something it's not, sell it to someone here as original (or close to, if that's really what it is) and then get what you really want. Either way, you're way ahead of the game.
And also take a look at some of the other Ovation solidbodies. Again, maybe not what you're needing right now but some great stuff to check out. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Miles site has the most data that I have seen anywhere. It's interesting that the Ultra GP and Ultra GS were about the same price when new, but Josh seems to have made the GPs worth 10 times as much used. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I just checked Miles' site and he said they had DiMarzio DP104 pickups with Schaller tuners. Certainly nothing wrong with the Grovers if they fit without drilling another hole in the headstock. The only Ovation I've seen where someone switched to Grovers was a Balladeer of about the same age and I could see the old screwholes. |

I just found this site and it has been extremely helpful. Apparently they put Grovers on some and Schallers on some. The one pictured on this site is exactly like mine. Thaks for the info guys. |
