I got a call from an agent I do some work for just as I got home from work last night. I was dead-dog tired, but she had a gig at Kenwood Country Club. They had forgotten to book live music for their post-Members' Golf Tournament BBQ and were in a panic. Could I P-L-E-E-E-A-S-E do it for her and them? "What time?" I asked. "7:00," she answered. It's 6:08, and I'm thinking, "No way." "You don't have to be there right at seven, and the pay's $400 for 2 1/2 hours." Whoa! I'm on my way-- I'm not THAT tired!

I play a lot of these gigs-- I'm booked for several gigs this summer at Summit Hills C.C. in Crestview, Kentucky, across the river, where I played last year. I've noticed something at these gigs-- almost all the women are supermodel gorgeous, and the men (the young men, anyway) are matinee-idol handsome. Why? Is it because of all the money? I mean, the young girls look like Jessica Simpson, and their moms look like Sharon Stone! Perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect tans, perfect....musculature. In the summer, when you play pool parties, the overall effect is lethal (and extremely distracting when you're trying to focus on playing music). It's also very demoralizing when you yourself look like a sack of potatoes! It's tough to watch the chiseled young demigods strutting around with their trophy wives/girlfriends on their arm. Again, is it the money? I know they get SOME help from orthodontia and cosmetic surgery, but, you know, they've got to have something to start with. Maybe somewhere in the beginning, only beautiful people had lots of money. The rich, handsome young men attracted the most beautiful, rich young women, and their kids were beautiful, and then their kids in turn chose beautiful mates, etc., etc. It extends to the hired help as well--even the waitresses there could have been models!

At any rate, it made for a very stimulating-- and simultaneously discouraging-- evening. Wonder if anybody else has ever observed this phenomenon?

There is usually a direct relationship between a mans wealth and the supermodel looks of his wife or girlfriend(s). In most cases model perfect women are looking for rich men and the more he has the more they are willing to overlook his age or appearance. While there are exceptions to the rule, power, money and fame or any combination will attract the kind of women you find at your country club gigs. Yes, its all about the money.

I agree. I had this same discussion with a friend nearly 30 years ago. We decided it was kind of like selective breeding to get a beautiful looking dog (a lot like that). The beautiful, or what many see as beautiful, tend to marry the beautiful and produce beautiful children. I don't know if you know much about dogs but collies have become a race of really dumb animals from what I've heard, kinda like Jessica.

It's the Ladder Theory in action.

Back in the mid 80's I used to go to Midland Texas on business all the time. (That's were George Bush made his millions in oil and raised GWB). In the airport lobby the car on display was a Rolls. Honest.

Around town there was a glut of bombshell starlets looking for and nabbing their rich oilman. And, there was a plethora of wealthy oilmen scoring on beautiful women.

In about 1986 the oil industry crashed. Whole housing developments were abandoned with homes partially framed. The Ferrari's vanished, and so did the women. The hot country music dance clubs closed. No more gorgeous 20 yr olds driving by in Mercedes convertibles.

How to spot the rich guy

Yeah...but are they happy?

Good looks and wealth don't seem to equate to a love of life (or your wife). Goodness, ugly divorces of the rick and infamous seems to be an entire entertainment gendre all in itself. No thanks.

Watching the beautiful people makes me glad that I am not one, and I rather feel sorry for them. I know that my short frumpy self, can just go and enjoy the art of living without pretense.

God, that's funny-- and sadly true!

I agree with Jeff; I may be Mr. Potato Head, but at least I'm happy and comfortable with where I am. I have to admit, though, that just once in my life, I'd like to be in a position to check out that old adage of whether or not "Money can't buy happiness." It'd be nice to be in a position to TRY!

What's so discouraging about playing a gig for a roomful of beautiful women?!?
Jump into the pool, and have some fun!
In Brooklyn it's not until about 3 beers before the women start looking REALLY good!

I joined a country club a couple years ago. I suppose for a $750 entry fee and a 5 minute wait list I shouldn't have expected much. Was it Rodney Dangerfield who said "I wouldn't join a club that would have me"?
Ours has a bunch of old timers who play golf a lot. Not many of the pool lounger types. They just play golf and it makes it tough to get a tee time. Kind of nice being in a club with a bunch of fat old geezers.

It is not cheap to be model or show-business gorgeous. Personal trainers, hand-made clothing, personal diet and exercise regimens, very personal hair and beauty shop treatments, massages, facials, tanning salons, . Hair styling and hair products alone start at about $600 a month just to keep up with auditions. If they are also performers, then there are expenses for voice lessons, music, piano tuning, etc. And in between projects, there is no time to work a real job because they have to spend so much time staying in shape, often on somebody else's payroll. Don't ask me how I know.

I love Dolly Pardon's quote. "It costs a lot of money to look this sleazy."

Actually, Groucho Marx.

In my experience, the people who were beautiful and self absorbed in our youth... get uglier as they age. While the reverse is true for those of us who loved long, well, and wisely.

That's my story, & I'm sticking too it!
