Had to drop by my dentist's office, and lucky me the local Ovation store is right there so I stopped by. Got a chance to play a 2006 Koa.

This was my first experience with the contour bowl. Very nice. It was very comfortable to play while sitting on the stools at the store.

The Koa on the top of the one I tried out wasn't quite as gorgeous as some that I have seen. The figure just wasn't quite "there". Otherwise, it had a very good acoustic sound. Great volume and projection.

Overall action and playability was very good. I prefer a pretty low action, so if I were to buy it I'd bring the bridge down a tad. The neck felt fatter and the "V" less pronounced than on my Adamas. I wish I had had it with me to A/B them a bit. The fingerboard felt distinctly wider.

I wish I had a chance to plug in and try out the VIP. To me, that is by far the most interesting thing about this guitar. The one thing I don't get is that out of five (or six?) images, only two are tuned to this particular guitar. That seems a little off. I also wish the VIP had some kind of interface (USB port perhaps) that would allow you to create and upload your own custom maps. The Aura does. Why not the VIP?

Bottom line for me is that I am not GASsing for the Koa, but am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a VIP equipped Custom Legend.

First time I've seen anyone happy to go to the dentist. :D

But then not many dentist's have their office near a guitar store, especially one that carries nice Ovation. :(
