Hey, everybody--

Picked up my new CS 257 today. I've never had an "O" with gold tuners before. They're beautiful, but I suspect they're going to need a little TLC. Any suggestions on how and what to clean and polish them with?

Thanks!

If your lazy like me, get pearloid buttons. They look nice, and you don't have to wipe them down after every use.

Or you could do what I do, don't waste time playing (and tuning) your guitar. Just LOOK at it. The gold will last forever! Dave

PS - Dry cloth works best.

Is that what you did with the torn-off sleeves in order to achieve that "Springsteen Look" back in the 90's??

Hmmm. I still wear my flannels with the sleeves intact, but rolled up, unbuttoned with a black pocket tee underneath. Gives you that Neil Young "Godfather of Grunge" look. Of course, unlike Neil, I am built somewhat like a Sumo wrestler, so the effect isn't as striking.

Anyway, I have a soft cotton washcloth I use to wipe down my strings at the end of the night. Think I'll get another one for the tuners.

Extensively-laundered cloth diapers work well.

My son's 20 now-- and we used Huggies. Wonder if you can still get NEW cloth diapers? I would assume somebody still makes them? Those WOULD be really soft.

They can be gotten.

Getta bunch of 'em and repeatedly wash/dry them over the course of a weekend . . .

The more "beat up" they get, the better.

Check out the car places, but some of the soft cloths have polyester, which scratches. The best car restorer/detailer I know uses old towels that have been washed so much that they can be easily torn by hand. Old 100% cotton T shirts work well, too. I have lots of those.

Lotsa good sources here--thanks, guys. Mark, I've got some old cotton briefs that need to be retired. Same material as the shirts, more embarrassing, though. I'd have to make sure to cut 'em up into unrecognizable pieces.

Of course, if y'want something "primo" . . .

. . . I've always found that a nice, soft piece of (genuine) chamois works best . . .

Dried and stretched llama skin. Works very similar to the genuine chamois but has a much more exotic ring to it.

After rick described himself as a Sumo wrestler, I'd like to thank Jeff for immediately erasing that nasty image and replacing it with one of Kate in her underwear.
