I just got off the phone with my friend and fishing buddy, Dave (not Witko).

...Unbelievable story....
On July 3, while hiking up to scout out some trout water, just outside of west Yellowstone, he was attacked by a female Grizzly bear. He has multiple bite wounds and is badly bruised, but is recovering well.
The News Story .

I use to live north of the 60th - we were out at the fishing camp when one night a bear cub decided to bunk with us. We had not choice but to shoot the bear and then hightail it out of camp before momma bear came looking.

It made for a great story afterwords, but was shear terror while it was happening. Jeff, if your buddy didn't shit himself - then he is one bravo sob...

Never shoot a grizzly with your average little popgun.
It only pisses them off.

And pepper spray just makes you taste better...

Lay down, play dead, be convincing.

"Lay down, play dead, be convincing."

So the chances of my ex being mauled by a Bear are pretty slim?

Well, a grizzly anway. They prefer to kill their own meat.

Now a black bear will eat ANYTHING!

Dave is one on the most capable outdoorsmen I know... and I know many good ones...

The moment the bear charged him he fell to the ground tucked and stayed that way till the bear left. No gun, no spray. Lucky dude.

He then hiked out nearly three miles, bleeding bad, till a pack horse expedition happened by and took him the rest of the way out.

I'm calling him Mr. Treadwell from here on...

The way I heard it, I'm a flat lander so have not real experience, but a grizzly won't kill you, unless you turn and run (now it's a game) or he's hungry or you threaten HER young.

Drop and curl up like an armored dillo is the way to go as your friend can attest to. Protect your soft tissues. I've also heard that if you stand your ground until the bear lays that first paw on you before dropping, the grizzy will 'respect' you for it and go easy on you. Although, I'm not sure I'd like to test that theory.

Only at Disneyland Buddy! Don't believe that statment for a second. Here in Alaska we have run in's with brown/grizzly bears on a regular basis. It is true that you should curl up into a ball to protect your vitals but more often then not, you WILL get beat up pretty good even when you do all the right stuff. Browns will usually beat up you then cover you up with dirt sticks and such and come back for you later. Black bears on the otherhand will eat your ass RIGHT NOW!! DO not curl up and play dead for a black. They will eat you. Fight off a black bear with all you have. Even if it is nothing more than a 4wt flyrod. Rocks, sticks, fists, feet, everything. Remember you are fighting for your life. Oh and don't call anyone Treadwell unless he is a real idot...

Like AFG says; with a Grizzly, you're gonna get hurt a bit. But play dead and you have the best chance of surviving.

Black bears? Come in too many flavours to generalize. Garbage bears (addicted to garbage dumps) aren't scared of people...so you best be scared of them. Wild blacks...make enough noise while hiking and your chances of ever seeing them is slight.

Always take a very old dog into the bush with you, or a very slow acquaintance.

OK,
Got it,
Play dead with the browns / grizzlies.
Fight the black bears!
OK, if you have to fight a black bear, what's the best guitar to clonk 'em with?
Strat ala townsend?
A burning strat ala hendrix?
Maybe a dobro.

Relax, Tim. It's just that banjos make such a good defensive weapon.

He lived for a long time in both Ketchum/Hailey. Lately, he's been in Lewiston and points north.
