We are trying to move out of the Dark ages of cassette recording into the iron age of recording to a laptop for our Sunday services.

We apparently have no "technoids" at church (I used to be, but gave it up years ago), and while I do use a Tascam 2488 to do recording at home, we want to use our laptop both to record the service and do the powerpoint projection for worship.

Ideally, I would like a simple set up to take the analog feed off of our Peavey mixer and drop it into the laptop which can later be burnt to CD's on request.

Would anyone be willing to give the me "idiot's guide" to doing this, either by email or PM.

Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff:

There's a good thread or two on this topic if you search for them. A few programs were thrown around with people talking about why they like one or another.

Cheers,
JT

Those threads were mostly about home recording. This is just recording the feed off the mixer at church.
I suppose it could apply. If you like to do your home recording in a large room with 200 or so people...

More than it's worth. Hell, I would have sent you my copy to look at. I like most of the Homespun videos but this one I thought was pretty lame. Maybe I am just a majority of one.

Coming off a board you can be as low-tech or high tech as you want. Everything from just grabbing the line out and plugging into the line-in on the laptop (the native windows recorder works fine) to adding compression, eq, enhancment before, during or after.

If you are going the low tech route, just remember to keep the levels going into the laptop a little on the low side. Not too low, but don't let the peaks go past zero if you can help it unless you are running a limiter.

What Miles said.
Especially heed his advice about peaking. On tape peaking isn't that big of a deal, because tape has more headroom. Digital peaking and clipping ain't nothin but ugly. And once it's recorded with clipping, there's nothing you can do to fix the sound.

John recommend the "low tech" route which is where we will start. Since the Pastor has the laptop, he will be the one having to learn it, and he is a pretty low tech guy.

We will probably get something like Sound Forge and I am thinking we may even just go with the cheaper audio only version for about $50 since it sounds very easy to use.

By the time we are ready to upgrade later, I am hopeful we will be blessed with a young tech savvy person who will grab hold of this responsibility.

Thanks for the point out on Clipping. I have experienced that a couple of times on my 2488 and it is UGGLLLYYY. I will watch it.

Sound Forge is great. Very powerful with an intuitive workflow. I didn't know they had an audio only version.

One of the beautiful things about digital recording is the ability to record in 24 bit. This gives you enormous amounts of headroom in the mixing and mastering stages. There's no need to push it as close to 0db as you can when recording, more like -8 to -3, leaving you much more room to work if you need to apply eq or compression (or any effects) later.

Again, remember: above 0db in analog recording can sound cool. In digital, it's the second worse sound there is.

No, the first is the sound of your cat throwing up in the hall... followed by the sound of your dog eating something...

...but that's a good example of what digital clipping sounds like.
