By now, most regulars round here know that I'm a Richard Thompson fan. A shameless one at that. But, if Witko can continuously assault us with Uke fodder, I have no reservation about posting Richard Thompson related items.

In 1999 RT was appproached by Playboy magazine to submit a list of the 10 best songs of the last millenium...
Tongue firmly in cheek (sha-dup, Cliff), he responded to Playboy, literally and listed songs from as early as 1060 through "today".

Playboy never responded, but RT made a show of these songs and it is now availible on DVD.

All I can say is you have never seen or heard anything like it. It's very entertaining aside from the music... And the Music is just freaking amazing. The Arrangements of ancient songs for a trio featuring acoustic guitar is mind-blowing. Rarely does one see this kind of muscianship these days.

Even if you have never heard of Richard Thompson, but like acoustic guitar music of varing genres, You will like this. It will, in fact, amaze you.

Another group for the "Amazing" category is Druha Trava ("2nd Grass"), from the Czech Republic. On their album "Czechmate" they play a full orchestral piece by Smetana scored for bluegrass instruments; I know that banjos don't get a lot of respect, but you've got to hear this guy. Their versatility and talent are remarkable. They don't play Ovations, but they truly deserve them (pun intended....)

BTW...
His bandmates- on vocals, percussion & keyboards are two Totally Hot Chics... Judith Owen & Debra Dobkin. Both over 35... you won't find them on the cover of Cosmo or Rolling Stone, but they should be...

... watchin' them play and sing is sexy, smart and inspiring in orders of magnitude beyond cleveage & belly buttons.

I had just read a review at the pool today in RS about the CD/DVD.
Sounds intriguing . . . have it on my list . . .

Naturally Jeff, the first thing I thought about when reading it, was you . . . which sucks. ;-)

I understand Cliff.
Just today, I was served by Richard Thompson Management asking me to "Cease AND Desist" all efforts to promote his work for that very reason...
