The 9158 is the most durable case available for Ovations. It also provides the snuggest fit for our guitars.
These days there seem to be a couple of different 8158's around. One seems almost exactly the same as the 9158, except that the guitar doesn't fit as well into it...when you sit the bowl down in, the neck is up in the air; when you push down on the neck for a better fit, the bowl rises up a bit. The moulded styrofoam inside the case is not as precise a fit.
Both of the above are TKL cases.
The OTHER 8158 is a different animal altogether: made in China, brittle outer shell that cracks VERY easily when you put it down to open your car door. POS. It's easy to spot the difference visually between this case and the 9158.
Respectfully submitted,,,John <>{

Be advised, the 8158 is NOT a deep-bowl case, no matter what you may read. You risk much trying to use it for a deep-bowl....take it from my personal experience.

Spend the bucks and get a 9158 for any deep-bowl O.

Old Applause speaks the truth...I can attest to it through a bad experience of my own..

9110 back in the day or 9158 in the present day is the only way to go for deep bowls.

I don't know what for about cases. About a year ago, my nephews Legend LX case had the newer script logo (the one that matches the headstock logo), but 6 mos. ago, my LX case had the old style logo. Plus, the case is squared off compared to the old ones, and looks bigger than my tan deep bowl case, even though the LX is a mid-depth bowl. Is this for increased strength?

The difference is one is the Deluxe case, and comes standard with all USA made Ovations (except FRG's) and the other is the case most often sold with Celebraty lines.

The Ovation cases are fine for storage but if you play out or travel alot with your O, they're pretty ordinary.

When the case on my CL fell apart, I bought an English made Hiscox case, they're brilliant !

The 9158-0 is the case listed on the factory website to come with the higher end O's and A's...unless the dealer decides differently.

Case in point - Oklahoma Vintage says Deluxe case, has a picture that looks like a new issue brown 9158. There is no new issue brown case.

My serial # 3 47RI came in a 8158-0 case. When I challenged Brother Bobby, he said all of his Ovations and Adamas come from the factory with the 8158-0...he said he didn't have a 9158 in his store. Just be aware some dealers have a different "business model" than other dealers.

Not sure why the factory allows him to do this...as he is trying to sell by price, he saves about $50-70 dollars (my estimation) per guitar which obviously affects his sale price. His position was pretty much take it or leave it...said they would pick up the 47RI the next morning and refund my payment.

The 8158 is better than most cases out there and it fits the 47RI or the 1687RI so have to believe it will fit the other deep bowls. A good case, just not the 9158. I have seen Guitar Center sell the 8158 sometimes for about $80 which means it is a good, inexpensive option if the brown case is falling apart.

Heck, at least Oklahoma Vintage isn't like some dealers who sell the guitar without case and then try to sell the case to you for additional dollars.

So, pictures would be helpful...

For deep bowls, I pretty much have the same-looking cases for all of mine. The case for my EA68 is the same outside, just shallower cavity internally for the guitar.

I have two others that don't fit the mold. One is on the 1869 I have for sale, which is a very heavy-feeling case that holds the guitar snug, but is a bit thicker than a standard and has no logos on it at all.

The other odd one is with my 1881 A2, which is actually shaped more like a guitar (contoured along the sides of the bowl) and has OVATION embossed into the plastic of the case.

Any idea which is which...and...why?
