Location: Scotland | Spotted this in my local music store. Looked like a vintage low-powered tube amp, but was too pristine to be an old one. Turned out to be a new Chinese-made Epiphone. Great construction, incredibly simple design. Single-ended all-tube, 5 watt class-A amp. 1 power tube, 1 preamp tube, volume control and that's it. I'm using it as a lap steel amp. Up full it's loud and filthy, but cleans up nicely with the guitar volume backed off. Instant David Lindley tone. With my discount cost £89.00GBP, which at the current exchange rate is about 170 bucks. It's probably even cheaper in the USA. Ridiculous.

Interesting that they've called it the "Valve" junior, which is a very nice and proper British term, rather than your vulgar colonial word "tube" |

Lots of potential to play around with along with my Kalamazoo Model 2, the Fender Princeton and THD Univalve.. |

If you are interested in 'String Tubes', be sure to ask for a free promotional pack of 'GitWiped' sanitary guitar pads, the perfect compliment to 'String Tubes' to keep your strings and guitar clean and sounding great.... |

Location: N.J. | That head will do a great Ac/Dc-Marshall type of overdrive. A few friends of mine have them and i've heard it thru a 1x12,2x12 and a 4x12.With A pedal in front of it its actually a great little recording amp. |

Slightly back on topic - anybody ever play thru one of the Epiphone acoustic amps? I always thought they looked really cool. |

Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | My Epi Vinatge Valve Jr. arrived today. I farted around with it for about an hour with my 86 Japanese Strat. I am very impressed with both tone and volume...
I picked it up in anticipation of ther Hamer Ecotone arriving, for a little blues noise. I think the two will make a great combination for pluggin in around the house.
It's very well built as well. For under 140 bucks, I'm a happy guy. |

Location: Scotland | I had a studio call for a boy-band thing a couple of weeks ago. I used the Valve Jr combo for a lap steel solo. I found 2 things completely ridiculous. One that the engineer kept asking me to turn down a 5 watt amp, even though it was in a booth, and secondly that I found myself playing lap steel on a boy-band pop record. |

Location: Long Island, NY | I bought the combo version (for $88 at a GC sale) a little while ago and was somewhat disappointed with the sound. I invested $25 in a new set of tubes and what a difference that made! The power tube that came in the amp was defective, so the new tube fixed that up. Also, I think that the Tungsol 12AX7 pre-amp tube I bought is a whole lot more responsive than the stock tube. The amp now sounds incredible. I even think that my Legend with the OP Pro sounds really nice through this amp. It's kinda hard to find fault with this thing for the price. I'd recommend it to anyone. The only thing is that the quality control on the tubes is poor. If you get one and it sounds OK, then you got lucky with the tubes. Otherwise start by replacing the pre-am tube, then the power tube. That should fix it.
One last thing. Epiphone has modified the combo version to cut down the hum at idle. The head version already has this mod. If you are looking for a combo make sure that is has only two black stripes on the face at the top and not the three stipes in the middle of the face, which is the older version.
This is definitely one cool amp. |
