Take one of those Olympia solidbody A scale electrics with the Volume/distortion controls and have some fun with it.

Today, its chrome.

This solidbody was a stained piece of Asian Mahogany with dents and such. I just put some Koa veneer over the faces.

I am trying to work up the courage to try my hand at an inlaid binding. We'll see.

Wow. You're going to make it look great, keep us posted.
By the way, those O(lympia) papoose are great little guitars. What electronics are you putting in? The original pups and stuff are pretty good.

Go for it!....I know you can do It!

Would you use wood or plastic? (a contrasting wood binding would be da bomb! ;) )

Have you got a dremel tool?
If you do you may want to invest in a Binding Router Guide (a little expensive for a one time deal but if you do a few more.....)

Good Luck.....keep the pics coming on the progress.

"What electronics are you putting in?"

Early on I gutted the original stuff and kept the Duncan Design HB103. This time I intend to wire it Volume only.

Possibly add a Ghost System piezos later.

If you're interested, I can send you the plans for a purfling cutter from Irving Sloane's famous "Steel Guitar Construction" book. Basically, a sharpened hacksaw blade in a hardwood fixture, for making the channel for the edge binding.

Thanks See's but I opted for the Stewmac - buy-enough-tools-you-could've-bought-three-guitars program.

Binding guide and bit, cream binding, adhesive, etc. Grabbed some Abalone from the South Pacific as well.

Notice that I'm keeping a distance - no close ups.
I am still a hack. There were more than a few little mistakes on this one but nothing ventured nothing gained. Finish is poof canned.

Binding then final buff.

Wow! Looks beautiful. Does it play or feel or sound any different with the new wood?

I should put strings on tonight!

I don't expect any changes except that I put on a real Tacoma Papoose neck instead of the Olympia ( think USA Ovation vs. Applause).

When I lined the necks up I saw where the frets were not placed the same. I had intonation issued with the first neck.

Let us know, I'd be curious if the neck makes any difference. I mean besides the intonation issues. How did you get the new neck? Ebay?
Man, I must've lucked out with mine vis-a-vis intonation.

I got the Tacoma neck on ebay.

When I lined the two necks up the Olympia neck had the 4th fret placed a fret ahead of the other. Then it kept that rythym to the end.

Both are listed as the same scale. The only problem I had was tuning with harmonics and at 5/5/5/4/5 frets differences. Short scale is difficult to work as well.

The electronics are gutted and I've gone with a single volume out.

We'll see...
