How about songs by not so recently dead people like the Johnny Ramone or Johnny Cash? I know the answer is no. But isn't it the publisher you have to pay, not ascap? |

You can check if a song is public domain at www.pdinfo.com
www.harryfox.com has a database of songs and copywrite owners.

Dave I took a quick look at the HFA site and the minimum number of units you can obtain a license for is 500, so figure $0.091 x 500 = $45.50 plus an $8-10 processing fee.
Pretty steep. :(
Here's the quote:
"12. Do I need a license for less than 500 CDs or 150 DPDs?
Yes, you still need to obtain a mechanical license if you wish to make fewer than 500 units of a physical product such as a CD, or fewer than 150 DPDs. HFA does not issue Songfile licenses for less than these amounts. You can obtain a license from HFA for the minimum number, which gives you permission to make up to that amount, or you can seek to obtain your licenses directly from the relevent publishers." |

Less than 500 copies, that's me (us), I'll try to contact the publishers about the songs I know. If it's easy I'll contribute, if not, well, no matter what I'll buy a copy of the christmas cd. Who knows it may be easy ... |

For instance, a whole lot of love was a rip off of a muddy waters number (oh in turn muddy ripped it off from someone else, but we don't need to get into that) and they owed a whole lot ... but a song like Wally Pleasant's song small time drug dealer is not a rip-off of Fun Fun Fun
Fun Fun Drug Dealer
More mp3 (This guy\'s original tunes always make me smile)
Maybe this is the ticket. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | OK, CAN WE BRING THIS BACK ON TOPIC ???
I know I started this, but let's get back to the issue at hand - the 2nd OFC CD. I've had mails from quite a few people (OK, it was only 5) asking (err, complaining) about not being able to submit copywritten cover tunes. SO HERE IS WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO. PAY ATTENTION Y'ALL ...
I would PREFER that you submit originals or public domain stuff, but you are more than welcome to submit cover tunes. I'LL handle the license stuff and I'LL pay the fees. We'll spread it all out over the price of the CD's. So, expect the CD's to cost a few bucks more than last year.
BUT ... if y'all submit TOO MANY cover tunes, the price of the CD is going to be too expensive to be viable. So I'm going to hafta walk a fine line to keep this thing reasonably priced. For this reason I would like to give preference to originals or pubdom stuff, but I also want the quality to be good. So we'll see.
OK ??? So, start recording and get me something to work with. LASTLY - the cut off for submissions is NOV. 1ST if we want to get this thing done and distributed in time for xmas season. I'll keep you posted on how it's going.

As per the instructions on the web page, I converted the song to the "wav" format, but it seems that the sound quality suffers quite a bit after the conversion. The MP3 version sounds much better. Is this normal? |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I have a Tascam digital 8 track recorder / mixer which saves to an internal hard drive. I'm not sure what format that is. I use an external CD burner to make the discs which end up in "CD Audio" format. I was just saving the files from the cd on to my computer. My recorder can be connected to the computer with a USB cable. I just haven't had the time to mess with it. Maybe I'll give that a try. |

Location: closely held secret | "CD Audio" is wav format. If you save them as mp3 to your computer than that explains why they don't sound as good when you convert them to wav. They've been compressed to mp3 then reconverted, losing audio quality every step.
Try ripping them from the CD straight to wav on your computer - or just send the CD you burn to Dave.
The USB connection may allow you to transfer them to your computer as wav format. |

The story line of trying to please all of the people some of the time goes like this ... I (as executive producer and content gatekeeper) would personally love to do a "holiday" CD ... Some members complained that is too restrictive and would like to submit non-holiday originals. Fine ... Others claim that they are not composers but would like to submit cover tunes, but they don't want to hastle with the paperwork and fees. Fine, I'll do it.
So bottom line, submit whatever the hell you want to. But when I put this thing together I'll definately try to give preference to originals and holiday stuff just to keep costs and hastle (for me) to a minimum.
So far I have exactly FOUR submissions (plus probably 2 from myself which still need to be recorded). CUT OFF IS NOV. 1st, so please get going or this project will never fly.
