First, find out what her cost threshold is. For example, if it's $300, then every guitar from now on costs... $300!
Second, buy guitars with the same basic color scheme. Yes, this probably works a lot better with guns where one black pistol looks just like every other black pistol, but you might still be able to apply it.
Barring that, just tell her what a great investment your guitars are! |

Yup, that worked for me.....once.......now I hide them around the house and keep the one I'm using at the time on the stand. Then switch them out every few days. Ha, now she's really confused!! Now, where did I put the 1115.... |

Second is buying one for my buddy...it floats a while and if it goes away he picked it up. I have to try the same color scheme - very creative...

This same thing happened to me once before I wised up, so this is what you gotta do ...
I kept the guitar at my office for a couple of months, then brought it home. The wife didn't notice for a few weeks, it just sat there with the other guitars, then one night she said something like: hey that looks different, and you say oh this, my friend (fill in the name of a reliable friend who'll lie for you)sold it to me for (say a ridiculously low price that she won't quibble with).
Works great, except she'll say, why so cheap, and you say; ah, you know, he just wanted to pay me back for all the help I've given him over the years, he's a pal. That should end it.
Good luck bro' ... welcome to the brotherhood. |

I also sold off a number of other items like effects pedals and other stuff, until I got everything I wanted (aside from an Elite Bass and an Adamas I). After thinking about it for a while, and looking at the finances, I decided I could live with what I have now. I've found that the best method that works with my wife is the "Buy it and don't give any reasons or excuses" routine. We may argue about it for a while, but once it's here - it's here. She gets over it. Obviously, if you think she's gonna get very serious over it, it's not worth jeopardizing a marriage over. |

Two simple rules work for me. First, make sure she has her toys first: Drop $300 at Eddie Bauer on her and I guarantee you will get at least $1000 headroom for your guitar purchases. Second, your car is ALWAYS the POS. Her's is nice. |

Then we found out Maryanne had cancer. The day before her sergury I had to go and pick up the guitar that I had purchased behind her back.I took it to a friend and said I didn't want to see it.
2 weeks later, I'm taking her to the airport where she'll fly to a friend's in England for a month of down time. I told her on the way to the plane what I'd done. She looked at me with a kindness I'll never understand and said "well..you got a good deal, right?"
That guitar burned up along with everything else we owned 4 years ago when our house burned to the ground. I still have Maryanne. I'll not do anything so foolish ever again in my life.

She buys stuff for the house and figures I'll reciprocate with a guitar. I've tried all the tricks, but she knows what's going on. Some guys buy cars and golf clubs, women buy clothes. Make sure she isn't wanting any then get the best deal you can. That's part of being married.
Also, it doesn't hurt to play her or your mother or daughter a love song once in awhile. |

My wife says the same thing about guitars in general.
I have about 12 electrics, 2 Ovations, Mandolins autoharp, dulcimer steel guitars......
You have to compromise. Find out what she wants and make your want seem so insignificant. Of course she may want a new husband and......won't go there.
Bottom line: You are not alone. I have been married almost 30 years. If you are a fan of Red Green, call him for advice. You'll have your new guitar faster than he can say "Keep Your Stick On The Ice".

But I'm to the point where I only usually play four of them on a regular basis. I've told her I'm getting rid of two of my three travel guitars and she says "so, are you going to get something that looks better than those two?" She doesn't care how many I have as long as she doesn't have to listen to me practice. She hates hearing only part of a song.

Lady Noah and I started out as best friends with benefits in college about 30 years ago. Sunday marks 28 years of marriage. Each of us have our passions. Some have become shared, others are respected and supported because they mean something to one of us.
Even though she does not play, Lady Noah accepted my passion for guitars. She has given me many as gifts and all the expensive ones are discussed up front. Lack of spousal acceptance can lead to the squid pro quo trap of competitive spending. |

On the "What She Plays" section in page 54, it reads that she has an old Alvarez that she rediscovered under the bed of her house in Mississippi. She claims that her father "used to hide instruments around the house so her mother wouldn't know how many he had."
I guess that a bad case of GAS then, is still the same as the bad case of GAS that most of us go through today ... :D |

I don't take no crap from anybody! ... else but you.
I wear the pants around here!...when I'm finished with your laundry.
'Cause I'm a guy you don't want to fight! ... when I say "jump" you say "yeah, right".
I'm the man of this house! ... until you get home.
What I say goes around here! ... right out the window.
And I don't want to hear a lot of whining! ... so I'll shut up.
The sooner you learn who's boss around here! ... the sooner you can give me my orders, dear.
'Cause I am the head honcho! ... but it's all in my head.
And I can have sex anytime! ... that you want.
'Cause I'm a man who has needs! ... but they're not that important.
And don't expect any flowers from me! ... because if I'm not mistaken you prefer jewelry.
I'm the king of my castle! ... when you're not around.
And I'll drink and watch sports whenever I want! ... to get into trouble.
And I'll come home when I'm good and ready! ... to sleep on the couch.
Because a man's got to do what a man's got to do! ... and I'm going to do what you tell me to.
Because I'm top dog around here! ... but I've been neutered!

Yup, she caught me perusing StandingOvation's and Samova's picture-palace-of-playable-porn.
She conveyed her needs for financial security (pay your damn bills!) taking priority over any idolistic need to accumulate guitars.
I attempted rationalizations over other options such as fishing boats, fast cars, etc.
It comes down to priorities and what is important. I have seven guitar hangers in my "play room". When they are full and I want another I need to decide what comes down and leaves the roost. Taking parts and learning how to work them, play them and pass them to others has been a great way to experience a lot of great guitars!
Admitting I have a problem is the first step. I do not seek a cure, just treatment and this board provides regular meetings!
Hi, my name is MWoody and I have some really cool Ovations! |

I had two similar experiences. The only difference was that the alibi was real, and my wife initially mistook them for a fabricated story.
#1: I acquired a used Martin DX1 for $150 cash, including gig bag at a music store in Queens. It has its fair share of nicks, but it's in very good condition overall. Perhaps, the shop owner had no idea what the heck he was selling. Nevertheless, when my wife finally noticed, I told her how much I paid for it. I even showed the receipt to prove it, but she initially claimed that it was fake. She was finally convinced when she called the number on the receipt, and verified the sale with the merchant, while I was at work.
#2: She got mad at me when I arrived home with the free Jasmine from GC, after purchasing ten sets of D'addario EXP strings. This time, she was finally convinced when I showed her the receipt, accompanied with the sale catalog that I took from the store. To alleviate the situation, I told her that she could use the guitar for a prize raffle at the baby shower that she was hosting at that time, to which she did.

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I've been married to my second wife for 16 years now. We actually met on stage, but that's another story. The one thing that makes our marriage work is that we keep our finances separate. She uses her money (plus some of mine that I give her every month) to buy whatever she wants, no questions asked. I pay for everything else, including the mortgage, utilities, groceries, all household expenses, etc. We don't pry into each other's spending habits. She has no clue what I buy and how much I pay. She'll walk into the music room, look around, and then make some comment like "there sure is a lot more stuff down here," to which I respond by pointing out and acknowledging a book or something, but completely overlooking the three new guitars, two new neon signs, and a new amp. I even expanded from two to six motorcycles on the sly. As Povation suggested earlier, I'm pretty much insane and I have a very tolerant wife. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | My wonderful sweety has been very supportive of my GAS trouble...up to a point. When I went from 1 guitar to 9 in the course of six months, she finally forbade me from logging on to ebay for a while...
Actually, she at one point was encouraging me to get a #47 - SHE actually argued the investment side of things. I opted not to - only to pick up a custom 12-string, country artist and hollowbody Ibanez instead (for combined less money :D ).
The funny thing is that when I bring a new guitar in, she either gives me instant approval or not - my Adamas II, deep-bowl Elite, and Viper have all been referred to in the "you can't ever get rid of that one" category.
And all this after 3 years of marriage! Advice to the boys: BE HONEST AND COMMUNICATE! It is sometimes easier to ask forgiveness than permission, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK!!! |
