Location: Oxfordshire, UK | Hello everyone. I've been in lurk mode for a little while, reading a few threads and checking out the lay of the land.
I'm now the proud owner of two Ovation guitars. I have an Ovation Celebrity CP 247 which I absolutely love. It has great sound projection but not a hulking great body like with most acoustic guitars.
Then yesterday I took delivery of my second Ovation. This one is a Breadwinner or Deacon (I'm not entirely sure which - I'll get onto that in a mo) and lookng up the serial number I'd say it dates from late 1974 or the beginning of 1975.
OK, so it a Breadwinner or a Deacon? It doesn't have the natural finish, the bound fingerboard or diamond fingerboard inlays that you'd expext to find on a Deacon, but then again it has the small Deacon-style scratchplate rather than the larger Breadwinner one, and it has a smooth solid black finish, unlike the "textured" finish on Breadwinners.
Anyone here know what I've got?

I've tried searching the other threads here but can't find any reference to this model. Apologies in advance if it has been discussed before. |

| Breadwinner. The Deacon has a diamond-shaped enlays and Ivory-bound fingerboards. (At least mine does..) |

| I'm not familiar with all the variations in the models, so it is either a up-graded Breadwinner or a low-end Deacon. I don't remember any Breadwinner having gold-plated saddles and tuners, and I don't remember any Deacon having a stock fingerboard. This is a mystery... |

Location: Scotland | Yep. Breadwinner. I've seen a few Breadwinners with factory gloss finishes. This is a pretty late model as indicated by the small pickguard and wider headstock. Towards the end of production there were a lot of inconsistencies from catalog spec, and not just on the Breads. I've seen UK11s with Preacher and Deacon necks and P.Deluxes with UK11 bow-tie inlays. Pretty much all the parts are interchangable from model to model, so at the end they were probably just getting rid of inventory. |

Location: Oxfordshire, UK | Thanks, chaps! I suspected it was a Breadwinner, despite being told by the seller it was a Deacon. However, the serial number - E + 4 digits (in the 9000s in this case) - date it to late 74, early 75, so would that be a "pretty late model". I thought they made them up to 1979 or so? |

Location: Upper Left USA | But the couch is from the Sears "Late Harvest" Collection. I believe it was the "Pomegranite".
We've seen some of the late model parts bin clear outs before. Makes me wonder where it would have gone had they ran a few more years! |
