I went to see Michael Angelo Batio (guitar virtuoso) yesterday, and I had my Ibanez signed by him on the pickguard.
However, I worry about whether or not over time the signature will fade (it was done with a sharpie).
Is there some kind of clear coating I can put on the pickguard to preserve it?
Any suggestions/advice would be very helpful.

Location: 6 String Ranch | Get a can of lacquer from stew mac and spray several LIGHT coats over it. They can get progressively heavier but start real light. |

Location: NJ | michael angelo is a nice guy. I had him sign a poster for my nephew when he was on his way out of a stand at a namm show. great guitar player also. I am not really into that style but you have to admire his ability |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | On eBaaaa, I got these pick guards (even before I received my O) They are clear, and stick-on by static electricity, or surface tension. No glue. They come in many sizes and shapes, or a sheet you can cut. I guess you should be able to find something to match your pick guard. So you could preserve that autograph in pristine condition, without risking laquer or acrylic thinning-out the ink.

Location: Tampa, FL | Something you might consider before using a vinyl 'self-stick' pickguard.
They use a plasitcizer to make these flexible and this plasticizer tends to migrate with time. This is the reason that xerox copies tend to transfer after a while when left in contact with various plastic folders and notebooks. The plasticizer used in the folder 'dissolves/softens' the vinyl toner and presto, you get transfer. If you are serious about long term preservation, the laquer approach might provide better long term stability. Using the soft vinyl protector on the catalyzed finish of O's is probably OK. That stuff is pretty impervious to anything. But maintaining the integrity of your sharpie signature is likely a much more delicate situation. W2 has it pretty much right. Some really light coats and then a finish coat.

You might want to consider just taking a picture of the guitar with the pickguard, removing the pickguard, spraying it, and then putting it into a picture frame with a picture of the guitar (with the signed guard) and a Michael Angelo pic, and then putting a replacement pickguard on your guitar. When you sell the guitar you just put on the old guard. You'll have a nice presentation piece you can look at all the time. I think that's the best. |
