Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Thanx. I had forgotten that Glen Campbell was actually good. In his day, and even now. One of the videos has a link to GC playing "Classical Gas". Very Nice!
(I don't know how to put the link right here, but take a look.) |

Here is one featuring both of Glen's original Deluxe Balladeers...Merle Haggard is playing the one I have and Glen is playing the one that, as far as I know, he still has.
Glen, Merle and John Hartford
Here is a great one with a young Willie Nelson...there's some wild picking on this one, on a country Artist, I think.

Really looking forward to this one. |

| At the induction of Campbell into the CMA hall of fame, he thanked his uncle for teaching him how to play the guitar. There's a basic 'mechanical' aspect to that style of double-flat picking he uses that has always challenged me. A finger for every fret, so to speak. I remember hearing Campbell explan how when he was a boy he learned to play using all four fingers while playing individual intervals of any particular ascending or descending scale, whether major, minor, minor7th, etc. So, I guess when you learn it young, you learn it forever.. |

.....I think what Glen is playing is maybe a #1123 Artist Classic (12 fretter with chrome tuners) I would have guessed Concert Classic but they didn't come out until '73(?) If you pause the video right after Glen says "I'll try to pick one" then you can count the frets (I count 18 total vs 20 frets on a Country Artist)....But either one he's still smokin' da fretboard!!! |

Location: Central Florida | Mike, I believe what GC's playing in the piece with Willie is a 1116 Classical. I didn't notice the color of the tuners, but everything else (deep bowl, dark brown top, 18 fretter, etc) seems to suggest a 1116. I couldn't pay too much attention to the guitar, as I was busy trying to watch his fingers! |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | Trboy...I'd say you are right about the model. The K-1123 is listed in the 1970 catalogue.
Glen's Barcus Berry prototype is also a 1123-4-"E" (#X010) from 1970, although it has the little 19th half-fret and is 1 7/8" at the nut. The catalogue states they have sitka tops but this one as well as the one in the video are cedar.
EDIT: Jeff, that does look like a deep bowl so there goes my theory, but was the 1116 around that early?

Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | The 1123 has an "Artist" depth bowl which later became Ovation's Mid-depth model although the Artist depth is listed as "Shallow"
Here's the profiles of my guitar's bowls.....which if viewed from the neck heel would look close to the same depth...
L to R - 1614 Folklore (Deep)*1613 Classic (Deep - notice the stereo/mono jacks)*1674 Country Artist (Artist)*1112 Custom Balladeer (Deep)*1627 Glen Campbell Artist (Artist)* and a portion of my Legend 12....
I think the angle of the guitar Glen is playing and the poor quality of the video makes the bowl look like a Deep instead of a Artist (aka Mid-depth)
At the start of the video as Glen steps up onto the platform with his guitar tucked under his arm....the reflection of light off the bowl looks like an Artist depth.....
:D   |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Ovation started out with one bowl on production models. It was just called "The" bowl. Then they came out with one that was more shallow. So this became known as the "Shallow" bowl, and hence the original one became known as the "Deep" bowl. The "Shallow" bowl was one the Artist Balladeer, Artist Classic, GC Artist, etc. so it also became known as the "Artist" depth bowl. Then along came the really shallow one and that became known as the "Supershallow" bowl. The "Shallow/Artist" more or less got phased out and later showed up as the "Mid depth" bowl. Still with me? Then along comes the Contour bowl which gets called "Deep Contour" bowl. So there is/was a) Supershallow, b) Shallow/Artist, c) Mid depth, d) Deep and e)Deep Contour. On top of that (no pun intended) the mounting ring of original textured top adamas guitars added about 1/4 inch to the depth so there are also so-called "Adamas Deep" and "Adamas Supershallow" which are slightly deeper than their non-Adamas counterparts. If you think this is confusing, look at the specs on some wooden box guitars. For example Martin makes about a zillion different shapes, depths, etc. Dave |

Sorry guys, I was wrong on the model number. I meant to say 1113.
The 1970 catalog lists two nylon string guitars: Model K-1113 (Ovation Classic), and K-1123 (Artist Classic). Based on the specs and what I can best determine from the clip, it still looks to me like a 1113. According to the '70 catalog, a 1123 would've had a spruce top. The top on Glen's guitar would appear to be something other than spruce (cedar or spanish pine, perhaps). Of course, we also have to consider that it could very easily be a custom "one-of" made just for him. |

| Tup,
So the shallow/artist/mid-depth are basically the same size?...I had an original artist and a GC artist, and I still have a 1624 artist. Those depths were pretty much the same, but I haven't compared them with a late-model Ovation/Adamas mid bowl.

Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | Jeff, Wayne's GC proto guitar is done in cedar so maybe ole Glen had a few cedar topped 1123's made especially for him.....The video clip(Goodtime Hour) aired on Sunday March 29,1970 before the infamous Jerry Reed/Baldwin/Barcus Berry/Ovation Panic event on The Johnny Carson Show which aired on Thursday April 16,1970
The Johnny Carson link doesn't mention Jerry Reed as being on that show with Glen but Jerry was a regular on Glen's show at the time and he may have appeared on the show with Glen without billing?

The guitar in the clip with Willie is probably the same one Ovation converted with the B/B pick-up and that Wayne now owns.....Lucky Dog! :D
(Edit: - I just noticed that Wayne's proto guitar has gold tuners and a GEN-U-WINE Glen Campbell Signature Truss Rod Cover.....so unless the tuners and TRC were changed at the same time that the P/U was installed....disregard my last statement!!! :D ) |

Steve Shallow/Artist is slightly shallower than a Mid. Your Artist, GC Artist and Country Artist all have the same bowl. Hence the word "artist" in their model names. Dave |

I wish it was but I don't think mine is the same guitar Glen is using on the Willie song. Acording to the letter I have from Ovation, the guitar was constructed from scratch with the BB pup. It also had the GC truss rod cover right from the start as well as a 19 fret board. I added the gold tuners myself but still have the original chrome set.
There are also two old handwritten manilla hang tags with it, one saying "Glen Campbell Classic Prototype" and the other with "Glen's Barcus Berry Guitar" on it.
The square tag with the 'X010' proto serial number is located on the upper bass side of the bowl, not in the usual location. The model number is 1123-4E...presumably for "Electric" wich is further indication that the guitar was originally built that way.
However, I am still a lucky dog...just one of many on this site! :)

Here is a scan of the hang tags I got with the classical. Not sure who the handwriting belongs to, each one is different, but Bill or someone may recognize them.
As for Willie's old Martin, that must be the most famous guitar in country music...a true icon.
