**THE NEWEST iDEA IN ACOUSTIC GUITAR**

(Bloomfield, Connecticut) – When the Ovation guitar was introduced in 1966, recording studios occupied entire buildings. Now in 2008, an entire recording studio is built into an Ovation guitar.

The new Ovation iDea is the first and only guitar of its kind, featuring a built-in MP3 recorder/player. The digital recorder is part of the on-board Ovation preamp. The patented technology makes possible a list of features never before available on any guitar – acoustic or electric.

Songwriters have always desired a simple and convenient way to record song ideas, hooks, melodies and lyrics. With the iDea, players who write on guitar will have an instantly accessible high-quality digital recorder with them wherever they go. The simple and direct recording control makes it easy to record entire songs or fragments, even vocals and commentary.

The iDea can record from the guitar alone, simultaneously from the guitar and built-in microphone, and from an auxiliary input. Any audio signal fed into the auxiliary input is converted to an MP3 file and stored in the iDea memory.

The iDea is also a learning tool, with audio lessons pre-installed in the memory. Additional lessons from iDea educational partner, WorkshopLive.com, will be available via download.

Guitarists who enjoy jamming will find a tireless band mate in the iDea. Several “Jam Tracks” are pre-installed in the instrument, and others are available online.

Downloading files from a computer or the Internet is easy via USB. Files in the iDea can be moved, renamed, deleted and rearranged right on the computer desktop. Mixes from recording software, rhythm tracks, even songs the player wants to learn can be downloaded and played either through the guitar output or headphones.

this looks like a pretty cool item. I am not so sure how it will be marketed but I assume as a stand alone retro fit item.
more info to come
Yup I have pics but can't figure out how to post them

sounds interesting, but hopefully not too complicated.

Hope it was designed by someone who was actually using all this stuff as you're supposed to, rather than the engineer who was thinking "and then we can add this...."

I'm with Beal, this could be THE guitar gadget of the next couple of years or the "cool idea that was" depending on the implementation.

Al, it's easy to post on the "other" site.

Do you know if it requires a dummy plug to operate the tuner?

Practical functionality is the key.
I don't need another hobby or 82 page instruction book.

t'would be nice if it had an A/C power option and a built-in bose audio system. ;) other than that, it sounds like a great "idea".

I like the Soundhole configuration, even though it looks like it's been borrowed from the MOB. I can't see myself having any use for that preamp, but it's a great concept, and I'm sure there'll be plently consumers who will love it.
The idea of onboard jam tracks and tuition is brilliant, and could prove to be a great teaching/learning tool.

looks like the same can dimensions or close...

wonder what the preamp/can will go for?

neat idea! and could be a great marketing tool if works easily and no monster learning curve.

looks better than the mob, but needs to be black or red..

I think the "entry level" guitar market is great for this. My trusty 'ol Medallion is still my "go to" acoustic when I want to just noodle, or go camping or whatever. I suspect a more entry level guitar is the go-to for many folks, rather then the guitar they gig with, or take out to seriously play.

What I am MOST happy to see is innovation!!! There were and probably still is a lot of questions about the future of Ovation now with FMC. But seeing NEW innovation sure is encouraging.

It looks like one of those combined high tech / low tech solutions. Like email. Like netflex.

You still have the acoustic guitar, but you get a built in looper, play back, tuition (as PT calls it) and recording device.

It all depends on execution.

But they've definitely leap frogged ahead of companies like Line 6.

It's a much better idea than Glibson's self tuning guitar, and may be something people can actually use.

Looks very cool. I've never been an early adopter of electronic gizmos, preferring to let others find the bugs. But if it's available stand-alone and can be popped into an existing preamp can it might be a fun toy.

Just last night I had to go back to my computer cuz I had a cool little lick I knew I'd forget (already did, I'll have to go listen to it again).

I opened up quicktime pro and hit "new audio" and played it.

It would have been VERY convenient to be able to just hit a button on my guitar, record it, then go about my biz on something else.

I think it's a great idea for that one piece. The whole lessons part and external input BS is just that to me, BS.

The recorder is a fantastic idea though IMO

I like this idea!It sounds like the Rockman for acoustic guitars, surely it may be of any help for people who don't have access to studios, and anyway something to record ideas in real time is helpful to professionals as well.

A pity for the guitar, that doesn't look anything special... :(

I see a few possibilities:

1. This probably sucks for Al's future sales of Olymous recorders, sorry Al.

2. No more excuses not to at least record an instrumental for the next CD or for your OFC social site page.

3. I wonder if this is gonna be ovation only or if it'll find it's way into other Fender products. Would be kinda cool to have on a Strat or Tele, if you ask me.

OK, let me guess ... you can't use the tuner unless you're plugged into a USB.

Guess so. And having a preamp just to connect to an amp baffles me. Do they have a postamp?
The local UHaul had a bunch of their old trucks on sale. I thought about buying one and loading up all my guitars and driving around to visit people like Moody. I need to spend more time doing stuff that doesn't make any sense but makes all the sense in the world.

think of it this way.

in 18 months the preamp will be reintroduced with twice the battery life twice the features and twice the memory. just like every computer product.

fender does have an item like this dave it is called the G dec amp. I had one for a while they are really cool for about an hour then you long for other musicians to jam with.

I think Damon has hit upon the real use for this. If you are seriously going to record something you'll go for a proper recording studio or on your computer, but if you just come across a little riff or something you want to remember for later, just record it on the guitar for later.

This sounds like a good idea for people who have ideas - I think I had one around '68 or '69 but I forget what it was. If only my idea had had an iDea. If you see what I mean.
And if I had one of these and I had my second good idea, when I pressed the button the battery would be flat and by the time I changed it out the idea would be.....

MP3 and "high-quality digital recorder" don't go together.
I like the idea, but it sure would be nice to have an option to record in at least 44.1K wav (even if via optional external memory).

Line six has entered the fray of simple loopers. Ovation beat them by a day.

If these two companies are doing it, there will be a future for this kind of thing.

Now I got try them.

Exactly what I was thinking. Heck, you could even run a micro-SD slot, since those go up to I believe 8GB now too. That would make it ultimately easy to use, since you don't even have to plug it in. An ability to transfer data from built-in memory to flash without USB connectivity would be nice as well.

It seems to me that as more and more features get built into onboard pre-amps, the need for some sort of modular system becomes increasingly important.

You shouldn't be constrained to a particular model just because you want a particular pre-amp feature. You should be able to mix and match at will.

I suppose within 10 years all preamps will be fully digital and all the features will be software selectable.

I think Al was being facetious. No need to shrink the display. A micro-SD slot is small and does not even need to be on the front panel.
Ahh, it's fun to design someone else's product and blithely use their engineering resources. ;)
The idea of a BUILT IN recorder is great; it helps to capture the spontaneity that is so much the magic of music.

I too agree that for "recording" there are recorders. Olympus unit is an excellent choice.

But for practice, noodling, writing on the back porch, this little thing is cool if it works as described. I can't think of how many times I've seen someone play a riff and then tried to figure it out. Sure would have been easier if I could hand them my guitar and say "hey play that riff again" and then I have it to work with.

I personally wish that they would just put a good, dependable pre-amp in their guitars. Anything more than a 3 band EQ and maybe a tuner are just "more things to go wrong" in my opinion. Like Cliff said when we were talking about the V.I.P, they should put all of this stuff in some sort of a pedal. This way, those of us who don't want all of the 'extras" don't have to mess around with it, or more importantly, pay the extra cost that it adds to the guitar.

Please forgive me for saying this. I undersatand that you will be able to record yourself playing especially when your creative juices are flowing.
Except that if you are noodling with the guitar for lack of a better word. you come up with an amazing riff that just hits you at the time. Then you think great this guitar can record it.
But what happens if you forget to hit the record button? I think most people don't sit down thinking "I'm going to create an amazing riff now,Id better hit the record button first".

A little odd that the guitar pictured on the "songwriting" and "lessons" pages isn't even an Ovation... much less the one they are trying to market.

Thanx for the info... So I can swap it out with my one OP-30...
Now all I have to do is wait for them to become cheap!
Cuz I'm sure that the iDea costs more than the guitar that I would put it in is worth.

And for those of us with depleting eyesight, that little screen really oughta be a challenge.

Cool, on playback you can slow down the tempo without effecting the pitch.

And Richard, what makes you think can swap this preamp into another guitar? Looks like it's got an added 1/8" mini-jack on the back of the guitar.

The tuner looks nice and readable.

I am not sure if actually understand exactly what this is but I can see it might be nice if I have an idea to record it up quick for later use. But other than that, having a built in professional recording ability in my guitar? That is nice but there are so many good recording devices now and the affordable home computer systems that turn your basement into a million dollar studio for a song comparitively....I think this is like taking a guitar neck and mounting it on a digital recorder? It is becoming overkill for me but I am too old and out of touch to understand marketing.

I suppose you could put an octaves worth of keys on a touch screen, have a pop-out, pull-up microphone/pick holder, a built in drum machine/cell phone, and a combination dry ice dispenser/fan unit to not only give the special smokey floor effects when you play stairway to heaven but it will keep your balls cool whilst doing so.

Keyboards are geetting this way for me as well.
There are so many combinations of sounds possible you could not explore them all in a lifetime. you do not have enough hands or fingers to be able to control all the features these devices have available now. Like the human brian you only end up using 10% of what these things are capable of.
I guess I do not understand this new package but it is a good selling point to the.... techno diverse, modern, electronic genius, youth markets, of today...... But even then only if this is possible to manufacture for a price that is not too out of whack. You will get the younger crowd to go for it.

I say make a pocket size unit that you can plug your guitar or mic or bass or keys into give it a tuner and MP3 capacity with a built in video game capacity and you'll outsell Sony all day....... and keep the guitars on the guitar wall and out of the electronics department at the music store.

but what do I know ..........I earn my living so I can buy great guitars from Al.

I did the press release and have been a beta tester... this thing is very very cool... 100 min of onboard rec time. it will retro fit to any kidney shaped pre. it has a looper, the ability to slow down the mp3 file up to 60 percent. you can input from an mp3 player or cd player with a built in eighth inch jack on the bottom of the guitar, and the user can choose to record with the built in and preamp input, or the pre and the 8th inch input for jamming with ipods or cd or any other inst like bass or other guitar! usb connectivity means you can upload or download your files the pre is recognised as a removable device... the guitar is supported with a website with content provided by workshop live with lessons, pdfs for the lessons, backing tracks with pdfs .
Everyone at the press event was very impressed. I think the mothership may have a bonified hit on thier hands... alot of R&D and development went into this one...IMHOP the got it right!!!

I'd love a live demo . . . to see it, hear it, feel it, work with it for some time, experiment a little to see if it would be something that I would actually use. I like using a loop for live work, and foot activation seems critical for timing. A third hand might be helpful. Matt, will you be doing a demo of this at NAMM?

you can bet it is not made in the USA.
the preamps have been made in Korea for years so I would say a best guess is Korea or China.

Guitar model number is CC44i, so I'm guessing its a celebrity made in kooreah ... but who knows anymore.

Matt, nice mini-review (sales pitch) and I must admit this has my interest. Nice to see that Al's selling it as a preamp only because who except Cliff can afford to buy guitars right now. But I'm curious about one thing, you say it's compatible with any kidney can, OK. But what about "eigth inch input jack on the bottom of the guitar". Makes it sound like some minor retofit work is involved, but would preclude you from swapping this unti among multiple guitars. Unless of course you didn't want to use the aux input. Is that correct?

Al, check your email. I'll take one.

Dave

PS - Any idea how to fit a kidney shaped can in the side of a Takamine ?

Well I'll be damned, I've already learned a few things from the lessons on the web site. And not having an MP3 player I did not understand the ease of sharing ideas to work on. I am still a dinosaur in many aspects of my life but certainly when it comes to electronics. This is great stuff but considering what it will cost to buy the guitars with this technology built in my personal take is; it will be a fad and sell to the tech heads but not to a large market.

If Ovation made a hand held unit you could just run a short cord to your guitar and it was compatible with MP3's and had the computer Jack ports to interface with you could use a device like this on any guitar with a plug jack to record and share/learn.
Very clever no doubt, and what do I know anyway.......... this might end up being the new thing for all guitar companies. But I say whom ever builds the little portable unit will make some real money. A unit like that would bring all my older Adamas's up to date. I would consider buying one, and I am not considering one of the guitars.... You'd sell this to guy's like me and to guy's and girls who own Taylor's and Martin's and Gibson's and...............other guitars who would like this technology but do not want to buy a guitar to get it.....get it......... you'll only sell the new guitars to a few.................but these little units will be the new "Hot Accessory to Have"

Boy would I be the Party Pooper at the board meetings or what? Bet they'd-a canned me by now.

My opinion revised:

for $300 I'd rather the Olympus I think. Unless the looper can be triggered on the fly like Brad asked about (and I haven't seen a response on yet).

as for brighter tuner, lessons, and all the silly plug your ipod in stuff, that means nothing to me. I probably already have several toys that will do similar things already and haven't used those yet. Don't need another.

I myself like the recording ideas part, but not for that price.

Great guitar for beginners though.

WHAT I WOULD BUY is a "flash drive' of sorts that has a USB connector on one end, and an instrument jack on the other. Perfect for a quick jotting down of an idea. I'd say the MSRP could be well under $50

Something like this... (quickly and poorly photoshopped)

I know that someone else here has already mentioned it, but it seems like Line 6's new BackTrack products are sort of what Damon is talking about. Records when it 'hears' a signal, USB 2.0 connection or use the 1/4" output, 1/4" input and one that adds a microphone, relatively low cost ($99 and $149, respectively). Doesn't do the lessons, MP3s, etc., but made for capturing ideas.

still too big, you need a cord...

1. get a simple idea.

2. plug in the drive (fits in the change pocket of your jeans) and push the record/stop button (one button ala Steve Jobs).

3. pull it out, and go on about your biz. (sounds like I just visited a "professional")

Design it and patent it Damon. There's no money in the manufacturing side on these kinds of things anyway. It's all in the IP.

You guys aren't going to believe this, but I actually use a small sony pressman tape casette recorder. It probably cost me $30 15 years ago. I don't know how they made it so cheap. Maybe when these things get down below 60, the market will be big enough. I'm sure the first casette recorder was pretty expensive.

you guys talk about ovation returning to the glory days... they come out with a fully realised very cool and innovative new technology, and some of you roast it.
it is what it is... aimed squarely at the aspiring guitarist/bring it with you hiking songwriter. for the price point it is a surefire hit for ovation.
I have no agenda on this board and wish ovation success on this one. they did everything right.

Matt, thank you!

There is an air of Mob madness about and it takes a lot of balls to launch anything on the market.

And they got there first!

There will be plenty of updates, downloads and bigger bloomin geek points added soon enough.
Here is an affordable guitar that can be adjusted to play fairly decent and it is affordable. I applaud if for no other reason than the fact that there is a new option in Soundholes!

I currently own an iPod classic with a measley 30 GB but it works for me. Look at how much Market has turned up in the last 3 years to just carry your music. Now you can make it, carry it and share it.

This iDea (I still like iBowl better) is going to bust into separate Web zones, forums and contests.

It is what it is and it can only get better.

I ordered one (preamp) from Al earlier today as soon as I heard about it.

I try to be a good ambassador for Ovation. I don't know what more I could do, maybe order two of them?

Assuming it works as advertised, it's just too cool of a toy not to have. Plus finally a darn tuner that works without having to plug in? Man that alone is worth the 3 beans.

From what I see in the videos and from what Matt posts I believe this thing will be a hit. Maybe not with the majority of us old farts around here, but with the younger crowd who constitute Ovations future revenue stream.

I think that the price-point and the "coolness" factor will make it do well (which'll be good t'see) . . .

Okay... I just watched the Premier Guitar video and it sez that the pre-amp is gonna be $299...
So I will hope that that is the MSRP and I can get it cheaper.
They say it is interchangeable with the newer pre-amp... I'm guessing that means OP-Pro...
That would be cool in my 2058T 12-er! :D

Oooh-ooh! Does that mean that I could put put it in my 2078T and lay a bass-line...
Then stick it in the 2058T and play the 12 over it?
Or vicey-versy?

Interesting that the preamp alone costs half the price of the whole guitar + preamp package. Certainly the package is an attractive price. I wonder if anyone will buy the guitar, drop their VIP (or other preamp in it and on-sell the iDea (with VIP) for a loss of less than $299?

OMA, I'm surprised you haven't thought of this.

Here is the deal
The release date is Nov 1 to certain retailers who jump through the hoops.
I will have product for that release date but cannot ship until then. (or maybe I can figure out how long it will take to get to you and ship on that day)
I am sure there will be others who will not play by the rules but I guess I am just stupid.
Anyway I have some guitars and preamps coming in.
if you want one contact me.

I've been carrying around my Zoom H2 digital recorder for a year now. Very handy. But this new iDea pre-amp seems like a great innovation to me. For capturing spontaneous ideas, what could be better?

I have a hard time seeing how you could use it as a live looper, but who cares. I've got a Boss RC50 for that.

Seems pretty cool to me.

Wait an extra week and get whatever you were getting anyway with the iDea instead of the OP-whatever.

Just got back from a quick trip to Maine. Saw the comments about dumping on Ovation. I sure hope no one thinks I am not inline with this new release... Great Idea, Great Guitars. I personally think they could make a "killing" by introducing this technology to those of us who may not be in the market for a new guitar again. There are a lot of musicians who own guitars already.....right?? and musicians who might like to use this new high teck stuff through their favorite guitars (electric and acoustic) without having the factory install done to do it or having to buy another guitar.

Once again Ovation is on the cutting edge! I think this is fantastic. I also think they could broaden their influence with a small portable unit. Hey, you know someone else will do it.

Just clearing up my point a little. Other than that, Maine was just beautiful this time of year.

Does it have a built-in mic, to record voice as well? You might get an iDea for a song, not just a riff.

I rarely talk about guitar stuff with SWMBO anymore. She tunes out thinking that I'm just trying to justify another purchase. She's right.
Anyway, the technology of this little thing really intrigued me, so I managed to work it into a conversation. She actually expressed enough interest to ask if it could be used in more than one guitar.
To me this, like the VXT and a few other things, is a sign that Ovation is trying to stay ahead of the curve. They aren't going to do that by making limited edition or custom high end guitars, but it's great that they can do both.

I was noodling around on workshoplive tonight and I went to the songwriting section - there in the very first lesson was Susan Mazer using the iDea guitar! In one of the subsequent lessons, she uses it by playing a lead over a rhythm that she had previously recorded.

That's pretty cool - and excellent for practicing! Just record some chord changes and you're off and running. NOW I want one!

Okay, so what I want to know is, what is the actual memory size on this? 100 minutes of storage in MP3 isn't a lot, when you consider the size of an ipod these days. Also, is this memory size affected by jam tracks and lessons downloaded to the iDea?

I like the concept...wouldn't be too hesitant to put it in my 12'er as an occasional swap-out for the Pro-Studio. Does the $299 preamp kit come with the 1/8" jack and all the connections, or would you have to send a guitar in for a retrofit?

Website says there is a 1/8 jack on the bottom of the guitar. A assume near the regular 1/4 jack. We'll find out 5 weeks from tomorrow.

Yup. There it is, right next to the 1/4 jack.

'course you don't HAVE to use the aux input, so drilling a hole in your bowl isn't necessary required.

It depends on what bitrate they record at.

Approximation:

File Size in MB = (Bitrate in kbps x Playing Time in minutes) / 140

So if they say it can record 100 minutes, and they're using a bitrate of 128kbps then that's about 90MB capacity.

I wonder if they ever considered putting an additional USB port on the inside so that you could just reach in thru the access door (providing it has one) and plug in a GeekStick to "up" the memory . . . .

My FreeHand tablet has that capability.
In addition to the on-board memory, there's a USB port where I can plug in a 2-Gig GeekStick, and have scads of memory to play audio files out to the PA during "break" . .

That would require a can change. Of course, if you're drilling a hole for the 1/8" jack, cutting a hole in the back of the can's no big deal...

... oh, and thanks for that, Dave. I considered calculating it based on the bitrate, but had no idea what an engineer might consider "quality" audio in the mp3 world...

128MB is about what I was figuring. Figure an ipod holds approximately 250 songs per 1gb of memory, at 3-4 minutes each...puts that 100 minutes of recording time in the 128 range. Al, the next time you talk to Rick Hall, would you ask if the downloads, demos, and tracks cut into the on-board recording memory, or are they stored elsewhere?

If so, you'd want to be pretty careful how much you download at a time, or you'll quickly cut your recording time down to 10 to 20 minutes.

remember, all recordings/tracks are downloadable/uploadable via usb, therefore storage is only limited by your computers hard drive.

Right, which means that you can obviously have way more data than is on the preamp at any given time, but unless you want to play plugged in to the computer, you still can only hold so much onboard.

Honestly, I think this is an awesome system...I'm just thinking that with the technology as it is, I don't know why it would be limited to 128 megs of storage. Either a flash memory slot or larger onboard storage would seem to be a very nice upgrade.

Just my two cents...

Matt, Please clarify - It sure sounds from the instruction manual that you've got to either have something pluged into the 1/4 jack or the headphone jack for the tuner to work. Please tell me that's not true. Dave

Hmmmmm 128M might as well be 128K these days.. Still a cool device but with multi-gb memory just pennies these days... I wonder why they even bothered with something that small. I wonder if they have a built in upgrade path?

If I had to guess, I would think "battery life" was the issue. Not much point in having the ability to record two hours, if the battery will only sustain record mode for 1.5 hours.

Just curious....
