Well, I finally finished the Chinese Slatocaster project. Boy, that blue paint/plastic coating was really on there. Anyhow, I hope you guys don't mind the pictures on the O site, it is my first foray into guitar restoration, so bear with me.
The next one will be an Ovation

Yeah, for some reason this body was constructed of one piece of darker wood with the top and back routed out and inlaid with the lighter wood. Then when they tapered off the tail on the top side, it showed a diagonal line where the inlay stoped. I used a golden oak stain to lessen the contrast. I am happy with the way it turned out. I just hated the blue(s).

You coulda sorta had an Ovation if you'd have done this... I actually cut up a cheap strat copy like this once.

Thanks, Capt'n. I didn't think of that! I might still do that if I get bored with the way it looks now.

Here's another Strat to tick off the O hardcore. Mine is the '83 Elite which a lot of people hate for some reason. It used to be Transparent Crimson Burst on mahogony and was heavier than a Les Paul.

I 'Re-finished' it by swapping the body with vintage white, which I've always loved on Strats, and now it actually weighs what a strat should.

I love that color too, and I was not familiar with the Elite and its pushbutton selector. That's a cool guitar, although I prefer maple fretboards on strats.

Nice.

While we're posting pics of projects, I'm close to the end of my "Brooklyncaster" ... just waiting for planet waves to send me a replacement tuner for one that broke.

Capt'n,
Now why go and screw up the bee-utiful shape of a Strat for something that looks like that???

It wasn't a Strat. When I say cheap, I mean I pulled it out of a dumpster, Deacon-hater.

A strat is a strat is a strat... but I still think Ovation's take on it is one of the most under-appreciated guitars out there... Maybe I should get it chrome'd???

While we are playing "build-yer-own" I just took delivery of three lovely O necks from Miles. Very nice stuff. The "earless one has incredible figure and promise!

Some of the best dogs I've had were found and had questionable lineage.

If I'd only learn to play an electric, I'd have a couple more of those GSs. Putting new strings on that Kahler Flyer was quite a challenge, though.

Interesting Mark... I really like the Flyer because it's so easy to change strings. :(

I'll have to pay you a visit so you can show me. It seems like the trem just kept moving until the fine tuners were pointed way forward. If I had the tremolo bar, I think it would be hitting the body now. I think I need something with fewer adjustments.
EDIT: I just checked the Kahler website again and it looks like I need to back off the set screw in the middle of the cam to rotate the cam backwards. I don't know why it wasn't that way before I changed the strings. Maybe one of the springs came off.

Did you change string guage? That will affect it dramatically, but yes.. the center adjustment is how you adjust the tension.

I assume I changed string guage, but I thought I was going lighter. I don't know what was on it before. This seems like I went heavier. I'm going to loosen them all up and try again. Maybe a good weekend project, but the 30th Anniversary CL will be here this weekend.
ANOTHER EDIT: Now that I think about it, the springs may pull the cam forward with lighter guage strings.

Miles, I have to agree with you. I think that GS is one of the slickest electrics I've ever seen.

Way less of them appear to be around. Did Ovation not make many of those as compared to the Vipers and other solids?

I don't know how many GS's are out there. Even if they made only a couple 100 per model there are at least 8 models. MSRP was about $435.00 at it's highest. There are three nice ones on eBay at this time.

Here's one of the least expensive GS models on the market . . . $169 BIN and its yours! StephenT may want this to go with some of that other low cost gear he's now collecting.

There's a red GS1 in a pawn shop here, supposedly with a case, that I could probably get for that. I was thinking about getting it for the neck, but I didn't have the time to dicker. Let me know if you want it and I'll go see what kind of deal I could get.

If anyone ever thinks about refinishing a GS natural, don't. It's all ugly plywood on the edges.

I just discovered the problem. The center adjustment must have been screwed so far in that when I took off the strings it fell inside. When I couldn't see the allen head, I thought it might be down in there. Found it and got it to tune up nicely once that adjustment screw was back in there.
