Congratulations to Phil Wong on being the first OFC Member of the Year!!

The motto of the OFC is….”Be There”. Phil has always risen to that summons. Even if it means departing from home in the dead of night he will “be there”, happy and well dosed with caffeine.

Not only does Phil heed the call to “be there”, (which is said to sound similar to a Llama longing for the snow capped Andes), he arrives with a purpose. Fulfilling every stereotype you have ever seen, Mr. Wong shows up with enough camera equipment to make even Ansel Adams green with envy. When he lifts the camera up into position, that massive framework of aluminum and light fixtures makes him look like the next mechanical monster to take on Godzilla in downtown Tokyo. Domo Arigato.. Mr. Roboto.

Phil’s extensive photo work has allowed those who have not been able to attend the tour to get a glimpse into the fun, excitement, and craziness that go on every year.

It’s that type of enthusiasm and dedication that makes Mr. Phil Wong the very first OFC Member Of The Year

Hey, that looks like my first guitar!

Congratulations Phil; you are a credit to your species. And thanks Brad for taking the time honor a great man!

And while it looks like it won't sound so hot, I am sure it's stable and should stay in tune!

Now we know where all the f'ed up necks from the U681's went to ...

Seriously this is very well deserved by Phil. The ultimate "team player" and providing such a great service that benefits the entire membership. Congratulations Phil.

I had a little "insight" that this was going on and even before the name was mentioned, I knew in my own mind that it should go to Phil. Well, actually he was a very close second, you know how self-serving I can be. Beware - The bar has been set VERY high by our man Phil. Congrats again!

Might I just take a moment to remind folks that at the '05 Factory tour, Phil bravely led, obsessively obeying his new GPS unit, an entire caravan of OFC members so far astray, they actually wound up at the Martin facility in Pennsylvania.

(and Witko had the shirt to prove it.)

Congatulations, Phil. It could'na happened to a more confused guy. ;)

Brad, that's spectacular and could not have been awarded to a better man. Phil, congratulations and enjoy your tiara for the year. You've earned it.

(Side note because Phil isn't here - shouldn't it have gone to someone who can actually play the guitar? Hey, I'm just asking is all....) :D

Amen! Phil is my hero. Out of the blue he sends me CDs of incriminating photos of you all. It's impossible to caricature people you haven't met without good reference material. My drawing of Jeff was lifted straight from the NE gathering pix. A high bar indeed!

Hello Everyone,
I must tell you that I am very honored to have received this award. I was surprised when Brad asked for a mailing address to send me something.
I PM Brad to day because I saw that the shipping weight was 11.10 pounds. I asked Brad if it was a fresh shipment of coconuts or a library of XXX DVD's that he was finished with ;) . I saw the label with my name and year on the first fret and thought that it was removable. Don't worry Brad, I realized quickly that it was permanent.
I told Brad that I will try to post some pictures this weekend of me with the trophy.
Thank you all for your kind words.
Phil

Don't "fret" Phil... that name tag is stuck real good! Hang it up somewhere to be seen!

A little history and thanks...
A while ago I took custody of the "booted Celebrity" from the '05 tour. I kept thinking that it might be cool to have it make a yearly appearance at the tour. Well, it was taking up room and my wife started to count it as a real guitar so I got the idea of a Stanley Cup type trophy that would change hands every year at the tour. I got permission from Miles and Al and took the trusty dremel to the Booted Celeb. I could not get the neck seperated from the body.
Enter Tupperware. With the help of Dave and Master Keller, I obtained a great looking UTE neck. This started off being more of joke type trophy but with that beautiful neck, the standard was raised. I could not possibly use the bridge from the Celeb with that wonderful ebony fret board! Then it just had to have strings and a volume knob!
Al pitched in with the machine heads. Kim Keller came up with a bridge and saddle. Then this project started to cry out for some abalone work. I don't have the skill but I know someone out west who does! I sent the piece to Woody and he worked his magic. He also provided the classy TRC and the volume knob. Thanks for all the help guys!

After that it was a little sawing, sanding, a half a bottle of Gorilla Glue, and there ya go.

I had concidered Phil right from the start but I was not alone in making that choice. The honor of being in the first fret postion has its drawback though. Phil will have to pass the trophy to the next honoree in about 6 months.

We are trying to work out an award selection mechanisim. Nothing firm has been decided but we do want the current holder of the award to be part of the process in deciding where it goes next. But that is a ways down the line. Let's let Phil bask in his moment.

I think it needs a letter from Bill saying that it doesn't count as a guitar and is in fact only a "Loaner".

I'm honored to be in on this one. Everyone needs a little hint of Bling now and then. I believe Brad used Oak on the body, so it should last another hundred or so years!

Actually, in 11 more frets it should be retired to the Engineering Wall at CT and be replaced with another inspirational piece.

Well deserved, Phil.

No one is more capable of jumping in front of a crowd of people admiring guitars, take a picture and disappear, leaving them blinking and blinded and wondering, "Who was that Asian man? I'll kill him if I get my hands on him!"

Yes, Phil, you're always there. In front. Blocking the view, in your quest for the perfect group shot.

Waiting patiently for your prints to return from the far side of the continent, you bear the abusive cries of "WHAT? You send your film to HOLLYWOOD for developing???"

Leading the caravan of happy, tired, somewhat groggy OFC brethren from the far reaches of Connecticut back to the haven of the Homewood Suites. ("You are off course. You are off course. Turn back. Turn back. ")

And we, your adoring fans (of whom you have many compromising photos), salute you. You have finally received the recognition you deserve, in a form that is least likely to cause anyone harm.

We luv ya, Philly!

Very Nice Phil!
Being at least one of, if not the "only" member from the northeast who has missed three gatherings. I have to say what I have seen in the photo's Phil has taken has been enlightening!

The photo's are of good enough quality and the images captured are of such content that I may never go to one of the gatherings now. Phil your work tells a pretty scarry story, and in great graphic detail!

All kidding asside Nice work. Enjoy.

I second that. The OFC is unique and I think that is WHY we are WHAT we are. Even with our collective inability to stay on topic, the turns straight into the gutter that some of our threads take, and the passion that occasionally causes uncomfortable tension, this is a great thing to be a part of.

The member of the year award is just the latest example of the underlying DNA of the board. Despite all the warts and pimples, this board (at least when considering the active members) is comprised of a great bunch of really good people. Brad - thanks for being the "in charge" of rolling this one. It is SO totally cool in a myriad of ways.

Phil - YOU ROCK! Hang that sucker on the wall with pride. Most of us wish we were half as cool as you, my friend. Blessings on you!

I must tell everyone again that I am deeply touch by this award. I know that everyone here contributes in there own way. My way just happens to be with a camera. For the most part when the topics we discuss here gets technical( electronics, string tensions, pick ups, nuts, saddle, shims etc). I just sit back because before joining this club I knew absolutely nothing about any of that. With the knowledge base that is out there I feel there have been many other people in our club that should have and will probably win this award .That is why becoming the first honoree of this award took me totally by surprise.

Phil.. Myself and all who I conferred with agreed that putting your name at the first fret sets the proper "tone" for those that will follow.

If you'd ever ridden with him and his GPS on a dark rainy night you'd know he also fits into the weird group pretty well.

Do you trust me to answer that honestly? I was just curious because I figured there couldn't be many extra Ute necks laying around. I couldn't see any flaws in the pictures, but I never saw any pictures of the flaw in the slothead from when it was new. I have no use for another neck. I've stuck mine out and got it chopped off enough.

As promised here is a picture of me with the award.

I want to thank my 10 year old son Greg for helping me with the photo. he used my Nikon D200.
The camera looked overwhelming in his hands. He finally felt comfortable enough to help me.
As I said in an earlier post, I used the trophy as a subject to run test(exposure, lighting) with my new camera. This is the very first time that I was able to take photos and put them on a website within a few hours of taking the photos. For most of you this is nothing new. For me it was a new experience because I had to shoot the photos, resize in photoshop and post without waiting for film to be developed.
I have a few more photos in the gallery of the award. Feel free to look.

Phil,
As the FIRST annual recipient of OFC Member Of The Year, I think you can demand, for the duration of your reign, that you aren't required to protect the upholstery by sitting on towels.

Just tight enough so that they don't flop around is fine. You might have to snug them up in time.
