Location: Derby U.K. | 3 years ago I was diagnosed as having degenerative disc disease so I had to pack in my job and stop playing guitar. I have undergone extensive physiotherapy and have recently discovered that as long as I only use shallow or super shallow bowl Ovation guitars I can comfortably play again. I managed to get a Special Balladeer which is fantastic but I would like to know which Ovation would be considered 'top of the range' with a shallow or super shallow bowl so I can get one of those too. Do any of the yearly specials come with shallow bowls?, the only ones I have ever seen have been deep bowls.
I promised my father that I would buy the guitar of my dreams with my inheritance but I've had to wait till now to start looking and I don't want to waste a once in a lifetime chance. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Custom Elite or Custom Legends came with shallow bowls. Last I knew, Noah had a beautiful red Custom Legend for sale that I passed up because I didn't want a shallow bowl. You could spend more money, but it would be tough to beat. Maybe you could buy 2. |

if you are looking for a used one, the 83 and 84 Collector's came with Super Shallow Bowls and especially the 84 should sound, from what I have heard, very good. I have a 1869 Custom Legend from the late ninetys (with the Optima Preamp with built-in tuner, if this is a criteria) that sounds very good. Only beaten by a Shallow Bowl Adamas II I have played in a Guitar Shop once. But even my 1868 Elite I used to have had a good acoustic sound.
So, if you are looking for acoustic sound in a shallow Bowl, the first to look for would be a Adamas II 1881, a Custom Legend or a 84 Collector's.
Or go the Custom way, like MWoody said, and let the factory build the guitar of your dreams. |

Dream analysis... You want to acquire the guitar of your dreams. Can you make out anything else about the guitar other than its bowl is shallow?
In the wood-top shallow bowl category, the guys forgot about the '92 Collector's Edition which had a Tamo Ash top.
Ordering an Adamas with a cutaway shallow bowl would probably be your best route. You would be getting a new guitar with the new electronics and a lifetime warranty. The Adamas, with its composite top, has an inherent immunity to temperature/humidity changes.
In my opinion, if you are thinking of collecting shallow bowls, get an '84 and '92 Collector's along with a Cherry Cherry Burst Custom Legend. And then order an Adamas.
Oh, by the way, did anyone mention that the Adoption Center has a '92 Collector's and a near mint CCB Custom Legend (w/XLR and OP50 preamp) :D
I would suggest to experience many different Ovation models before deciding on wood-top or Adamas. |

If you plugin, but like that Ovation look, you might want to try an EA68. If you like nylon strings, maybe an EA63 or a Godin Multiac. |

Location: Derby U.K. | WOW, thanks guys, I've left messages and requests on other non-related forums and it usually take around a month to get one reply let alone 8! of them.
All I have to do now is find a shop in the U.K. that has any of these models in stock so I can try them. I wont be gigging but I will be recording a lot so the pre-amp is a concern, the op24# on my Balladeer sounds great and I have no problem tunig up so an older model wouldn't be out of the running. I think I'll have to do a bit of travelling and try as many as I can and if that fails I'll consider enquiring about a 'custom' model. Is there anyone on here from the U.K. who has or knows of anything suitable for sale?

It took about 3 months to get from the time it was ordered, but it was worth the wait; Al Pepiak was the coordinating genii who made it possible. If you want the particulars, I'd be glad to e-mail them to you. I've had her for almost a year now; it was a very good decision for a bunch of reasons.

Location: CT | If you don't wanna wait for a custom ordered guitar, S.Shallow bowls come up on eBay all the time. You should be able to get 2 top of the line guitars (I'm thinking a 6 and a 12 string here) in excellent condition for less than a new custom ordered guitar. A couple of the collector years had a 6 & 12 ('85 and '86, maybe others), you could get a matched set. Cool!

I would share your view about the scarcity of USA made Ovations over here. I've used eBay successfully to obtain mine. I have an 84 Collectors; if you are in the North East you are most welcome to call in and try it out. I promise; if you try it, you will HAVE to get one! Shipping for mine was $100 from NJ, and duties were a modest £26 in total (I think I got lucky there).
Oh, and its Capo, to rhyme with tomARTo...

I also suggest that you wait for Paul Templeman to provide some guidance. The starting point will be the UK Ovation distributor's web site, which is www.jhs.co.uk
This only covers standard items and ordering a "special in the UK" would take time. Your best bet would be to order from Al in the USA. From all the reports I have read, he provides a fantastic service.
You should also buy "Guitarist" magazine, who have a number of adverts in from local Ovation agents.

| If you buy it from al, pay the shipping/insurance/import duty and VAT, you'll still be quids better off than buying one from a UK dealer.
Shallow bowls are the most underrated Os - they have a fantastic sound all of their own and they have a way superior string balance 1 to 6 compared to ANY gitar I ever listened to or played. They are remarkable instruments. And plugged in they are the bee's knees and the dog's doodahs rolled into one. |
