I just yanked a nose hair that was curly as a ballpoint pen spring...

You ain't old until you have to pull a crop of those from the inside of your ears. The nose ones are easy to keep tamed down, but those ear hairs are tenacious as a pitbull.

You just reminded me that I was going to pluck a couple of wild ones in my eyebrows this morning and forgot. Maybe I'll just let em grow and try a new style of combover.

I haven't been the same since my turbo nose hair trimmer went out on me. It's been about a year, and I'm thinking about braiding those suckers.

Jeff, the curl may be due to an improper pluck. You know how ribbon curls when you run the scissors down the strand? You may have grasped the hair to high and slid a bit on the yank.

Bruggy,
Don't you have some lip stick to put on?

brainslag,
good grooming is essential when playing out. I'd like to think the OFC offers advice not only on Ovation guitars, but useful tips on performing as well.

Jeff,
I look at it this way. If you are not getting older you are already dead. I didn't get that from Confucius either. It's just that I spent most of last year going to funerals an could not wait for last year to be over. I thought that this year would be better until I found out that two relatives past away this week. One was 46 (my age) and the other one was 53. Sorry about this morbid post but at least most of us can still say that they will be another year older soon and these two relatives can't say that anymore.

I hope that anyone who doesn't know how to groom himself (females excluded, they already know), would go and ask his wife or his mother.

Good health is merely a matter of dying at the slowest rate possible.

Good grooming is keeping your hair out of other peoples food.

My life is simple. But then, so am I

My adaptation from the Blues Name Generator.
I know it doesn't make any sense, and that's appropriate.
Unless you hear me play, then it makes complete sense!

Ovation guitars first captured the interest of professional musicians who wanted an acoustic guitar with greater projection on stage. The most visible of these guitarists in the late '60s was Glen Campbell. Every week Glen and his Ovation were welcomed into millions of homes around the country, as America tuned into "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour."
DURING THIS CLOSE ASSOCIATION WITH OVATION, Glen asked for an instrument with a built-in pickup so that he could come out from behind a microphone when he played.

There had been a number of attempts to make a pick-up for the acoustic guitar, but each attempt had flaws. Glen's guitar-playing friend, Jerry Reed had a classical guitar with an under-saddle pickup that didn't sound half bad.

The concept of the pickup was right - piezo crystals under the bridge saddle - but it was made for a nylon string guitar and suffered from tonal and string imbalance problems, accentuated when used on a steel string.
OVATION ENGINEERS STUDIED THIS GUITAR and then set about creating a new pickup of their own. Up until then, playing acoustic on stage either meant standing in front of a microphone, using a magnetic pickup mounted in the soundhole, or using a stick-on "bug" on the soundboard.

None of these worked very well particularly if there were drums or electric instruments in the band.

The engineers saw that a successful pickup would have to have the right balance sensing top vibration and string vibration. Getting the balance right would give the best acoustic tone and the greatest volume.

Their solution became part of the first professionally accepted acoustic/electric guitar ever made. That pickup is still in use today on the acoustic/electric Ovations. The sound is well balanced, the output is very high and the saddle is properly shaped for accurate intonation.

Piezo pickups have a very high impedance, which means that the sound can change over long cable runs. In order to prevent this, Ovation designed a "buffered" preamp that lowered the impedance, preserved the tone and controlled the output.

This was the beginning of the acoustic/electric guitar. Bill Kaman recalls, "Our first preamp was a very clean design. It had two contour filters to enhance the "acousticness" of the sound, and combined with bringing the impedance into the right range, the guitar sounded very rich and full. The first preamps were volume only. Later we added a tone control to the circuit as well as offering a stereo preamp.
"IN THE BEGINNING ONLY ABOUT 15% OF THE GUITARS we built had pickups. Ten years later, 90% of our guitars were acoustic/electric. The truly amazing thing is that it also took about 10 years before any of our competition began to offer acoustic/electric models as standard in their line."

While the Ovation pickup has remained the same, the electronics have kept pace with the players' needs and sound reinforcement technology. Over the past 25 years, Ovation has maintained its leadership as the dominant acoustic electric guitar in the world.

I know you didn't write that. Too many words in excess of 2 syllables.

I thought Dopey Digit Dribble was when you drool on your guitar while playing. Not that I do that.

The fact of the matter is this discussion has so many levels to fall through yet and, my fear is, given the extraordinary amount of time on our hands, we'll hit every one of them. The responsibility is almost overwhelming sometimes.

Finally found a topic we all have an interest in. My ear hair is like the grasslands of Kentucky - swirls in the breeze.

Anybody else ever been to a barber shop where they set fire to the hair to get rid of it? Really works. But I only went the once.

Minor fact, line cooks have no hair on their hands or knuckles.

Barbershop? Only for the singing, feels to much like a ripoff these days. As long as they refuse to give 1/2 off, I refuse to give them half to cut.

Same here, Weas. I was trying to light my brother's gas grill once, and didn't have a handy click lighter to use, so we were dropping matches through the grates into the open jets...

Eyebrow hair grows back, fortunately, and I too will only do that once.

Biggest problem I have is with the ear hairs. The suckers keep getting trapped inside the ear by the hearing aids and itch till I yank them out.
:p

Hey, Schroeder, this is completely OT here, but we have this new kid at 'ork who hails from somwhere like, north and maybe westerly of London. He has a thick accent, which is cool. But, I made a comment about some of the chavs around our department and he got mighty peevish.

Do you have a field guide or something for identifying Neds and chavs? Based on his reaction (and performance as of late), I'm starting to suspect we may have trapped one. Are they catch and release or what?

On topic...I have exactly one ear hair, and it's in my right ear. My wife thinks it's riotously funny to yank it out when I'm concentrating on something else and happen to be sitting next to her. It always grows back, though. :\

Cruster, maybe you need to put some fertilizer in your ears to promote hair growth. :D

Uh, that would be a big negatory. No need to go cultivating more time consuming hygiene tasks. ;)

Very nice, Lanaki. BTW, I see you're number 5051. Makes me wonder who'll be 5150.
