I'm not sure if this topic was ever posted before but here it goes. The first event that I attended was the OFC Tour 2004. I arrived at the hotel and saw the large crowd. I needed to find out who Al and Miles were. I am not comfortable when it comes to meeting large groups of people that I don't know. It usually take me a little while to warm up to people. As it turns out I took a deep breath and walked up to the first person I saw. He turned out to be Hizzoner/Craig. He made me feel more at ease and pointed me in the direction of Al and he in turn showed me who Miles was. So that's it. The next person after that was Woz and then Moody, Cliff, Michael Wong...
So what's your story?

I can't remember the order. It might have been tdeej, our other Idaho member. We had a few discussions about meeting up if he was in Boise or I was in Moscow.
He was driving through Boise and called. He had a van full of family, so I said I'd meet him at a restaurant. We arrived there during a downpour, so I tried out his beautiful 1547 in his van with his family all there, probably thinking we were nuts.
Went down to Phoenix to deliver the Wooden Roundback to StandingOvation in March of last year. Around the same time, stonebobbo was in Idaho and we met out by the airport.
Finally, a bunch of us met up in Portland last August.

I was early at the '05 event and sat outside by the pool wondering where the newbies line up for the ceremonial initiation spanking (I'm still waiting). Little by little people started showing and, well shoot, I'm a shy guy, so I waited until I saw a face I recognized from pics here. Sure enough, that Waskely Wabbit walked out and I knew I was in the right place. Stonebobbo was next (though I have to admit I wasn't sure if he was cwk2 or Bob Seger).

Great topic, Phil.

The first person I spoke to was Bill, who called me about a half hour I joined . . .

The first person I ever "met" was Al.
A little while after I joined, Jeanette & drove down to the South Jersey Guitar Show in Pennsauken. I was at a table at the front door paying admission with a vintage brown Ovation case in my hand. Al pounced on me. "Whatcha' got in the case??? . . . oh, are you Cliff??"

He then took me over to his table, where I met Master Keller and Miles.

I am a man of many disguises.

I don't recall exactly who the "first" was, but I met a whole of of folks within 30 seconds of entering the lobby at the first OFC tour. Miles, Al, Cliff, Hizzoner, Michael Wong, Johnny (Strummin' 12), Templeman, and a whole bunch of others. I've been lucky to have met a lot of different people here at one time or another. You just may not know which persona it was ...

Are you kidding? I've been around here long enough to know better. I spend most of my time trying to avoid meeting any of you guys. I know a truly dangerous crowd when I see one!

Met up with Mark in Boise on a snowy/rainy winter day. Sure enjoyed meeting up with all at the NW gathering as well. I will always remember Mark's parting statememt to the effect, "keep on buying more ovations." As we drove off, my wife broke out hysterically with "that was like telling a drunk to buy more booze."

Paul Moody at the 2nd(?) NAMM get-together at his house. He had to leave shortly there-after and his wife left for a school meeting of some sort, so there I was greeting people at the door of a house that wasn't mine for a party I wasn't throwing. Just as well I showed up early.

Jeff W. introduced himself to me while we were signing up at the Ovation Factory tour that rainy Friday morning. Finding my way around the factory, I met Alpep and we briefly introduced each other. During the Hamer tour, I met Mitchrx, his son Andrew, Bill (Weaser) and so on...

I hope to make it on the 2007 tour to meet new members, and to be formally introduced to the folks that I never had the opportunity to meet last year.

The one and only that I met so far is Al when I went to pick up my #47. I got to play a few guitars, see the construction and have some good conversation.

I was in the same building as Stuart Miller (and probably picked up his future mandacello!) but we didn't actually meet.

I too am looking forward to meeting many others at upcoming events.

I met Mr.Golf007, Kurt, when I went to his house about 15 miles away and pick up a copy of the "Book".

It is the same book that is in circulation with the OFC.

Soon after I started recruiting... Andrew?

Interesting questions. I don't know the order of things anymore but I do know that one day Moody showed up at my door with a Nashville strung Legend in his hand. Not sure of that was before or after the 1st tour. I do remember that the first tour was at a different hotel and as soon as I walked in I saw three scruffy looking guys at the bar, who turned out to be Cliff, Temp and Al. Mike Wong was practicing segovia scales. It was all just a blur. Well before that I had spoken to Samova a few times and maybe once to Bob Frith. Prior to OFC days I had a few phone discussions with Budny way back into the mid 70's. The phone was rotary. Dave

I think Karen and I met Johnny (strummin 12) in the lobby of the Hilton for the 2005 tour.

I, like Phil, have a bit of reservation going up to a large group. Johnny came up and introduced himself as we were just taking in the din of all the guitars playing in the lobby.

"So, Cliff, this is Bill...tell me...ya ever think about llamas...? Be honest now..."

Actually, the conversation was centered more around my SlotHead . . .

Come t'think of it, . . . the situation was likewise with Al, Keller & Miles . . .

Come t'THINK of it, . . it was ALSO the case with Moody, Wong, & Witko . . .

I think I'm developing a "complex" . . . .

This is depressing . . .

(At least Templeman & I didn't even TALK about guitars until we got totally FitShaced at the bar after meeting for the first time . . . blood may be thicker than water, but alcohol is the Great Common Denominator.)

Samova.

My son and I were watching a PBS documentary on Bob Marley and the Wailers had a Deacon or BWinner in the band. Adam yelled "LOOK AT THAT GUITAR!" I said "That's one of those old Ovation electrics. I wanted one so bad when I was a teenager." To which he replied "You've gotta get one of those." I never even knew there were more models of solidbodies.

I looked on ebay and found a beat up Deacon with a Breadwinner neck and no case, a real dog. I also started reading the Breadwinner Fanpage, where I found out about Sam. I emailed him the pix from the auction to get his opinion. He said not to bid over $300, and that he had a beautiful Deacon for sale. I bid $305 and lost, then called him to see his Deacon (and slothead, and other amazing guitars). Left Sam's house with the Deacon.

Of course I met Philmax, cholloway and PopCritic at the SE gather... great guys.

First member I met was Matt Smith at one of his clinics in OKC. Great guy!
Next went to Paul Wags house in Ft. Worth. George Dudek (sp?) and ttenn. Also some other folks. Had a great time. We haven't heard from Paul in a long time and have not had a post from George since that night, even ttenn has been quiet lately.
Met Tim Good from Edmond in Brother Bobbys one day he had his Folklore LX in for a question. That was in April of this year.
Hope to meet some of the other OFCers that live in this area.

Temp was the first one when I picked him up at the airport. Within a couple of days I had met Keller, Al, Miles, Dave (were you at NAMM in '03?). Then in May of that year, I was in Phoenix and went by Witko's house. I think it was there that the IRS and PETA got on my tail (fairly certain they were watching his house), and have been hassling me ever since.....

There are people I've met thru the OFC that have become very close friends and they will remain close friends long after the OFC.....

gh1, 08/19/06, in his driveway. "Am I early?" "No, everybody's in the back already."
Great gathering, great food, real decent players (excluding me, & exhibiting admirable restraint, I might venture!)
Forged some excellent comraderie, and had to leave, unfortunately, too soon.
I couldn't begin to list all our NWOFC attendees, but gave MWoody "the business" on a new hardshell. Really enjoyed Waskel's rendition of "As the Raven Flies". Always been a big Fogelberg fan. Back-up vocals are not my forte, either.
Folks at my clinic ask me about the OFC mug. I just smile......

MWoody...as of yet the ONLY one. Met him before he was a member (back when he still had some sanity left and actually worked at his job), and he casually pestered me for about a year before I checked it out.

Hope to meet many more when the next NW gathering takes place.

That's the advantage of living on an island.

When I strode manfully across the arrivals lounge at Dulles expecting to be met by Gore Vidal with a guitar, imagine my feelings on being faced with Jed Clampett's idiot nephew.

Then in Ct the Moody bear hug set my recovery back months - it was early August before all my internal organs were back in their approximately correct positions. A polite hello would have been enough. I mean, its not as if I like any of these people.

I think it was Al and Miles followed shortly Cliff. It was at the factory at one of the gatherings and it was like the trade show blur, meeting a ton of people in a short time.

No one...yet. Once I do everyone will know how truly bad I am at playing guitar. :(

BTW, what's a Nashville strung Legend? does that mean the strings are on backward(upside down)? I think Albert King plays that way...

Brainslag,
I'm in the same situation as you. I have been to a few gatherings and have taken close to 400 photos(probably more but could only post the ones that have clean content). Hint: taking pictures is a good excuse for not picking up a guitar in public. I see myself in this scene.
A gathering of the OFC and someone on a megaphone says " Phil step away from the guitar, keep hands where we can see them, don't make any sudden moves, you have the right to keep the guitar silent!! Anything you play can and will be held against you. If you can't afford a guitar teacher one will be appointed for you!!

Nashville tuning = high string tuning. You take all the octive strings from a 12 string and put them on a 6 string. Give you a real high jangly sound. I've always played it as a rhythm instrument but I've heard people finger picking them as well.

Shro', you'd better be coming again to CT this year. Don't make me come over there and drag your sorry a** over here.....

I've been trying to remember, but not having much luck.

It was in the Homewood Suites lobby in 2005, I know that much. I had gotten up at 4am Wednesday, worked all day, taken a sleepless red-eye flight from PDX and arrived at Bradley about 10am Thursday. Got to the hotel and sat in the lobby swilling coffee in a fog of exhaustion until I could check in. Somebody from the OFC came in and we had a nice conversation, but I'm at a loss as to who it was.

If it was you and you remember, please except my sincere apologies and let me know so I can write it down in case I get asked again.

Please disregard all of the above. After reading a couple posts I missed the first time through, it was Paulcc. He was on my list of possibles. See, I knew it was someone nice!

Sure enough, that Waskely Wabbit walked out and I knew I was in the right place. Stonebobbo was next (though I have to admit I wasn't sure if he was cwk2 or Bob Seger).
Great topic, Phil.
You must be really shy, Weas. I don't recall seeing you in '05!

The clue is in the thirty hours - you were actually sitting there talking to yourself. The staff still talk about it. Apparently you thought your jokes were very funny cos you kept shouting out, hot dang, never heard that one before.

Related question - Who was the first OFC member you pissed off? For me it was Serge Lara, of course we have since become good friends. He joined the OFC and posted about nylon string players and me-the-smart-arse chimed in with something profound like - no nylon player worth a shit would be caught dead playing an ovation. I think he posted a sound clip of him playing his country artist. Holy Crap Fatman. The taste of crow is still fresh in my mouth after all these years ...

I was introduced to the site itself by Robbie ("worshipleader") and then got to meet a bunch of folks at the '06 factory tour.

I'd rather be pissed off than....

Anyway, first met gh1/Greg in his driveway while my road addled brain was still processing how much the giant sunflower at the intersection looked just like the satelite picture. Then Waskel and wife, and then I won't list the rest 'cause I might miss someone and piss them off....I'm no Jeff W!

But a great bunch of people I was glad to have met. Sorry it couldn't have lasted longer.

If this refers to me, I apologize again that I am so unphotogenic, especially with guitars. I always seem to be looking down to make sure I am at least fingering a chord and the picture captures my bald dome.
I don't know any Maitres in Boise. We don't go to fancy restaurants. Tell your son to be prepared for a lifetime of stress that comes from arguing with people all day. At some point he'll probably look forward to spending time on a computer talking to a bunch of Ovation nerds.

The first person that I did not already know was Cliff. I can sniff out those brown cases from a mile away.

Actually CWK and I conversed on the phone and via e mail for a number of years. I did meet him at a Namm show in about 97 or 98 in Nashville and at Scott Chinery's party in the mid ninties when both he and Chris Martin were at my table.

I had placed an online ad about 3 or 4 years ago looking for people to play with, and Cliff had answered it. I decided to go see he and his partner (Two Man Group) at a local bar / restaurant and we became friendly. Some time later, he told me about the OFC, and the rest, as they say, is history. The first person that I met from the OFC after I became a member was Johnny (strummin12), who is also a good friend of mine.

Just a side note...Cliff and I never did get together to play. We did do an "off the cuff" version of "Message In A Bottle" a few weeks back at a gig that I was doing with his parter, Rick. We've been threatening to do something together for a while now. Who knows, it might happen one of these days.

Thanks for the ride Bro!! I hold you in high regard as someone who helped me get my U681T.
Yep, Fred was my first, too. On our way to the first OFC Texas meet. I stopped in Irving and picked him up at the Starbucks and drove an hour and a half to Palestine. There I met Paul Wag, Craig/Hizzoner, xnoel, George, and the Dallas Rep Mike Stevens.

Nope, the wife didn't know about it until we got back. She would have had a fit about me picking up a stranger I met on an internet chat board.

Had a blast at OFC Texas. Met many more at the factory Tour 06, but Fred will always be the first. I ended up with the Custom Elite from that trip too.

Stonebobbo.

I met him and his lovely wife in January 2003 at The Fillmore in San Francisco. It was Kaki's first appearance there, and she opened for David Lindley and Robert Randolph. Bless his heart, Bob and his wife came to see her.

It was with great pleasure that I bought them a "tall cool one."

Best to all--

My first unofficial contact was with a feller named "Standingovation" via an ebay purchase  (before I joined the OFC) I had bought a set of what I thought were gold "three-on-a-side" tuners for my 1613 only to find out when I received them they were chrome (Folklore)
Dave (he claimed that the color on my monitor was screwed up! ) was very nice about the whole ordeal and allowed me to return them for a refund!(I think he even refunded the shipping?)

The first official contact (after joining the OFC) was with Paul Hebert("1687Adamasguy"-"1619CustomLegendguy"-"Legend-LX-fan"-who btw we haven't heard alot from lately)by phone answering questions he had about a 1615 Pacemaker he was buying from me!

The first official OFC "In Person" contact was Woz at the '04 Factory tour!
My wife and I got to the hotel early and was checking into the room when we saw this guy (Woz) carrying in a couple of Ovation cases and a small PA into his room right across the hall.....so we introduced ourselves and eventually we all wound up back in our room playing his 1537 that he was selling!
Later on we headed for the lobby and met up with Willard, then Craig(Hizzonner),then Steve Chapman, then Cliff, then (after supper) a bunch other Ovation nuts/fans started showing up and the "Thursday Evening Hotel Lobby Jam" got underway......... :D

First in-person meeting was with Elginacres followed a few minutes later with StephenT at a restaurant in Denver in late spring, 2006. We also met one other (apparently inactive) OFCer at this time and the four of us retired to my basement studio for some guitar swapping and jamming.

That was a great night, Dave. Kaki really opened a lot of eyes that night, especially mine. The whole show was awesome ... it ended up with the Blind Boys of Alabama closing the show with RR on pedal steel. I have the poster they gave out that night on the wall of my music room.
