Location: Illinois | guit tars with four corners in cross section have a more angled sound to it. The bowl backs have a more rounded sound. I hate to say it, but it is hard to describe, but I know it when I hear it. It's like the difference between the sound a piece of angle iron bouncing off a concrete floor makes vs. the sound a pipe makes being bounced off of aforementioned concrete floor.
To use a musical analogy. The difference between a xylophone and chimes. Yes, both have a metalic ring, but different nuance.
To my ears an Ovation does not sound like a guit tar. To my ears it sounds more like a lute. Not better, not worse just different. Given the attempt at market interest in the lute being made by 'Sting', I'd think O would jump on this band wagon.
I have 'Stings' latest album, "From the Labyrinth". Great music. Money well spent. But there is a surprise in the liner notes. Anyone know what it is? |

Location: PDX | Well here's a good one (below). On another board (not music related) i frequent somebody asked for advice on picking out his first guitar -- had to be electric. I mentioned the solidbody Vipers could be had on ebay for under $500, and if he had up to a grand to put down that he should check out USA built Hamers.
In response another member posted:
"Tastes in guitars is all perspective too (well, except for basic build and part quality). I, personally, think Hamers and Carvins play like a block of wood and Ibanez feel like a cheap toy to me. I would truthfully laugh if someone pulled out an Ovation during an acoustic recording session."
Sigh.

Location: Illinois | Back in the days of LPs, (not Les Pauls.. Long Play records) recorded music was sold in 12" square jackets with plenty of room for pics and music and group information. Records are properly stored inside these jackets, but as the cardboard jackets are highly abrasive to records, they also need to be in a liner or thin paper sleeve between the vinyl and the outer jacket. These were sometimes just plain blank paper, but oft times they would include lyrics or additinal notes about the group or advertising for the record company's other offerings. Information on this inner sleeve I refer to as liner notes. I think the Grammy's used to have an award for liner notes and jacket design.
I use the term 'Liner Notes' to refer to the little booklet parked just inside the 'jewelled' plastic case which serves the same purpose as the liner as well as the jacket. |

Location: GA USA | Don't they still give Grammys for design and notes? It's been years since I was a NARAS member, but I used to vote on the Grammys, and help select the local projects for nominations (I was actually nominated one year for design... or pre-nominated, not on the final ballot).
I like using the older terminology still. As we've discussed before, I think "album" is still a proper term for a CD, in that's it's a collection that defines a specific period of time, much like a photo album. |

I've seen record sets in a bound book with numerous sleeves, each holding one record with one song to a side. No, not 45s, but rather 78s. This collection of records in a book was called a 'Record Album' or an album full of records (like a picture album)
With the advent of closer grooves and numerous songs on a side the 'Album' name was kept. Now referring to an entire 'Album' of music on one disc. So yes Album does apply to CDs as well.
Unlike dialing a phone number. When was the last time you actually 'dialed' a phone number by sticking your finger in a wheel and dialing it around to the stop and releasing for each digit?
We can't really dial a phone number on today's equipment, but the term sticks with us. Kind of like that space behind the back seat in your car is not really a trunk. |

They had a lot of 'storybook' type collections on 78's (Peter & the Wolf, ect). |

Location: Omaha, NE | I thought the article on Bob Segar in Guitar World Acoustic a couple of issues ago was very nice. They showed him with his acoustic collection, which included an Ovation and an Adamas. In the interview, he said nice things about Ovation.
Personally (and I'm referencing the comment above where someone said he would laugh if he saw an Ovation at a recording session) I think anyone who thinks its about the instrument and not the musician is a poser. Nothing but a bunch of dime store cowboys.
There is nothing better than playing on a guitar that they don't respect, and still blowing them away. |

I have three 78 record albums. My grandfathers alsorts which includes such tunes as the original recording of 'I'm Henry the VIII'...with all 25 verses! And my mothers Mills Brothers collection along with an Elvis or two. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | My favorite LP liner notes (I've still got it) is Led Zep "In Through The Out Door" where the inner sleeve is a brown and white photo but it's impregnated with water color paints. You dab water on it and it turns into a color photo. You just don't see stuff like that anymore. Dave |

They had some sort of dispute (don't they always) but then the band observed that their contract gave them complete creative control, including over packaging. So they came up with about every absurdly expensive thing they could think of (eg, the rotating wheels, etc).
That's something I miss with CD's. Album covers and liner notes aren't what they used to be. |

Location: Upper Left USA | Pink Floyd's "Wish You were Here" album was probably the pinnacle of Album art. Or is it Albumicity? It came with a Post Card that I filled out and sent to KZOK Seattle with my entry for the best Listener choice combination of songs.
I chose "Wish you were here", Steve Miller Band "Fly like an Eagle" and "Stairway" for epitome the of FM flow and Rock coolness. I was thrilled that Saturday when it was selected as the best Listener submittal.
The year was 1978...

After she didn't seem to understand records or albums, he finally said, "big CDs". She raised her hand and bought the whole bunch. I've often wondered if she tried to play them on her CD player. |

My older brother and I had an original Satanic Majesty's Request album. The one with all the Stones sitting with the planets moving around them. Brian Jones had a wizard's hat. The Holograph image. After the first issue, the albums just had a photo. My Mom threw it out, cuz the album was scratched.
"Screw the record Mom! The Cover is what was worth money!"

Location: NJ | Not t'be a "technical" f@cktard (well, maybe), but it wasn't a hologram. The process is called lenticular.
It's basically two (sometimes more) images that are overlaminated with a piece of plastic that has a series of v-shaped grooves that act as "lenses" that allow you to perceive a "3-D" and/or moving/changing image(s).
The whole "trick" rests squarely upon getting the laminate registered/aligned correctly to the art. It's pretty close tolerances (especially for small images) . . .
Nobody misses album cover art more than I . . . |

Location: NJ | There was a UK company entitled Hipgnosis that was formed by some friends of PinkFloyd.
In their time, they (and some of the members who struck out on their own) created some truly imaginative stuff. A vast majority of it was on some masterpiece albums.
There was a book out about them years ago entitled "Walk Away, Renee" that documented a lot of their work (and some of the the "back-stories" behind the art, as well). I've got a copy, but it's probably LONG out-of-print.

Location: Illinois | THE SURPRISE is that while 'Sting' sings on all the songs, 'Sting', a relative new comer to the lute, only plays the lute on two of them! The rest is done by his 'master', Edin Karamazov. (not a bad way to score free lessons!)
To his credit I have never purchased a 'Police' nor a 'Sting' album. He never was my cup-o-coffee. But, I saw him interviewed on a Sunday morning show, talking about his lute playing and his new album. I thought, "'Sting'on lute? I thought he was a Rock and Roller! This I gotta hear." Again I saw him in a couple of scenes of 'Studio 60' with Karamozov. I bought the album for the music. 'Sting' was just the bait that caught my attention. Karamazov is fantastic. Money well spent. |
