Just sent the UTE (30th anniv.)in for repair of the braces and a touch up on the neck. I was thinking of changing the neck to gloss finish but was worried about affecting the value of the instrument. First of all, how many of these were made, and second would changing the finish ruin the value of it in case I ever wanted to sell it? I remember reading a post not too long ago about someone changing the finish on the neck to gloss, and it actually made it sound better, or was this just psychosomatic?

Jim,

I custom ordered my U681 to be gloss neck and acoustic only. It looks, plays and sounds better than all the other U681's except Jeff's.

The thread about a gloss neck sounding better was one of my other guitars. Over the past year I have sent a total of 7 guitars back tot he factory for neck glossing. On most the sound improvement was subtle but one one in particular (a Book Elite) the change was dramatic. It's been hypothocized that this is because the glossing of the neck tedns to add a slight dampening of spurious vibration in the fine grain structure of the maple strips in the neck. Glossing your neck will only INCREASE the value of the instrument. But weather it increases by more than what it'll cost you for the gloss job is questionable. It ain't cheap.

Is the qualtity of the sound better because of all that Dave said or is it because "it is better to look mahvalous than to be mahvalous..."

If you prefer gloss necks, I suppose your playing will improve, otherwise the improvement is about the same as the white painted hatch covers. Your mileage may vary.

And then there is the spiritual/philisophical side of all this. Are you more concerned with the monetary value of your axe, or how it feels to play it?
After the economic crash, you will be able to get more food by entertaining than selling your equipment.

Anything you have done at the factory will maintain the value of any Ovation.
Conversly speaking, if you asked them to do something that they felt was stupid they'd say no.
If they'll do it...it's good for the guitar.
That's my philosophy...and it's better than anything you've heard so far.
