Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I've been contemplating a strat for some time and after seeing this one, I think I'm going to just build one from the specs provided. Maybe even get the book they refer to. I've always like his sound, and I've only heard one other guitar in person sound the same. It was a guy in Hawaii, and I know he had SD pickups in it, but at the time didn't pay attention to which ones. The thought of the extra pickup switch is great too.
I would probably built the 80's era model with the Kahler Pro on it. I have a flat black strat that just needs a strat neck. Tried adapting an Ovation GS neck, and although it looks fun.. the profile is just wrong.
A fun winter project. |

Location: CA | "A piece of rock history" is how they always spin these things. Which is like selling a reproduction headband like Hendrix wore and charging $1,000 for that as a piece of rock history. When you could buy the same thing without the fake provenence for about $5 — or, hey, use an old T-shirt for nuthin.

I am very much looking forward to a tour of the New Hartford factory at some point in the future to see all of the changes that are currently being implemented. From the past tours given by Rick Hall and Frank Untermyer, the next tour should be really special. Our conduct here on this forum may effect whether that actually happens. |

Knobs are in the wrong place, yes I know some like it, but I just can't stand it. Half way through a song, the volume is back down to half way cuz my hand keeps hitting it. I have never liked the classic strat neck profile, nor am I a big fan of maple fretboards which most strats have. I like ebony, and they just don't really do that. Totally dislike the tailpiece too. One of the worst trem systems ever designed in my opinion. Hardtails aren't much better.
I could add more, but I'll stop there. I do think Fender has done great things for the industry, I like and have owned many of their products, but Strats have always seemed to be one of the most overrated guitars to me.
I just don't get it I guess.

My strat was more of an impulse buy at the time. I was buying my son a Tele for his birthday a few years ago when I saw this one - tried it out and it just felt good. That being said, I have since completely changed out the electronics, most of the hardware and the pickguard. It plays and sounds much better than original (even though I still don't!). This one has a rosewood fretboard.
As for the Gilmour (or any of the "name" guitars), no way could I see paying that much money for something that can be just as easily built from off the shelf parts. |

I like the body shape, the balance and the 3-pickups with tremolo. However, I prefer my UltraGS with KahlerPRO, slanted humbucker with two singles over most actual Strats.
Several years ago, I started "shopping" for strats, and what I noticed was they just weren't consistent. And not like one was bad and another was good, but pick up two, same model, same color, same everything, and they feel different. As picky as I am, and out of practice as I am, I was surprised, even though I couldn't tell what was different, they simply felt different.
Maybe this is the appeal of the Strat. Once you find the "right" neck... you get a new guitar, and put on your favorite neck you've been playing on for years.
I still don't understand the logic of buying a brand new Fender Stratocaster and then swapping the bridge, pickups and tuners, and saying what a great Fender Stratocaster it is... It's barely a Fender at that point. Why not just buy a guitar that has everything you already want on it, or why spend the bucks on a whole guitar that you're going to gut, when you can buy the parts and just build what you want (which is the route I'm going to take).
I guess I asked and answered my own question. Maybe it's the fact that a Strat is a pallet to work from. Maybe that's the appeal. It plays pretty good out of the box, but if you want to change or experiment with electronics, it's just a matter of carving a piece of plastic. Want to change the bridge, plenty of real-estate to do whatever. Want to change the neck, the number of necks available that will bolt right on can't even be counted. Want different tuners, fine.
Maybe it's just that simple. |

I read reviews on MF/GC/M123 where people say how nice some guitar is since they put in the Grovers, EMG's and Kahler tremolo. (I wanna know how the guitar is outta-da-box) If you are gonna do all that, just get a Project slab with a neck you like then put in the PU's and stuff you like.
Pick your color scheme and put your name on the headstock. And it still won't cost $3.5K. :cool: |

Location: CA | Strat of one stripe or another has been the one and usually only electric in my stable for about 30 years now, give or take. I've had a Les Paul, Danelectro, Yamaha, and a few off-brand electrics, but they all went away after awhile while the Strats stuck around. As noted below, the current one is an '89 MIJ blonde-neck Squire, which a collector recently told me is one of the few Squires that's actually worth some $$$. I like the heft, it plays like butter and — to my ear — sounds terrific. But then I never played that many top-end electrics (or acoustics, for that matter). If I did, perhaps I would change my tune. |

Location: GA USA | The first real guitar I bought for myself was an American Standard Strat and I wish I still had it. But I agree on the trem. I've had the one American and two Squiers and you might as well leave the whammy bar off the guitar.
But look at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. The whole thing is one long Strat commercial. |
