Location: Michigan | I watched the show a little bit and I now realize that every single person that made it to the final 10 or so have now gone on tour and released a top ten hit .Do you see any of these Idols as self made artists or just manufactured & manipulated by the record people like ( Randy the Dawg ) & Simon who make all of their money promoting people to sing what they know will sell.Im not complaining about what Simon & Randy do for a living but,,,Do any of the Idols have their own stuff that they could sell or will they be put out as garbage when their novelty of The American Idol wears off.
What do ya think? GWB |

All the other season winners pretty much have faded into obscurity, as well they should. The show is much more about the gimmick and the gossip than it is about actual talent. It's like high school all over again...if you're "popular" you've got it...at least for a minute... |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | It's a TV show. It's primary purpose is to garner ratings in an effort to sell advertising. That's pretty much it. Anything else is just gravy on top, but certainly not the primary focus. I'm sure at least most contestants had fun, made some money, got something cool on their resume, can't ask for much more than that.
Not really sure what this has to do with anything here.. but it would make a nice BLOG topic... |

| My wife watched it last year so I've seen some of it. Just middle of the road crap from what I can tell.
I think they should get Courtney Love in there as one of judges instead of Abdul - that would be good for a laugh at least. |

So I have watched it and however contrived it may seem (and probably is), there is something about it that keeps you coming back the next time. (So the ratings game is working at our house.) And near the end, when freakin everyone sounds great, you can't help but be caught up in it if you've watched a few. And it's pretty neat to watch a bunch of supposed nobodys get their chance in the sun, however fleeting. Plus hear some good music. That guy who won last time (forgot his name already) who got to play Sharp Dressed Man with ZZ Top — he did that one better than Billy Gibbons hisself! Ha ha ha.
FWIW, with few exceptions, 'Idol', Jeopardy, and occasionally CSI are the only current TV shows we watch. (plus Simpson reruns after Trebec.) Everything else is blah and I can't take the commercials anymore. Just movies otherwise. And football. |

| Yeah, I can't take the commercials either and everything started to sound like commercials to me about 20 years ago so now I hardly ever watch TV, listen to the radio, answer the phone or pick up the mail and the paper they throw at the end of lane says an east wind will always bring rain. |

But the local Fox news (it is their network) tells me about it like it's "News"... and like I care!
It would be nice if they had a show where people actually played their own instruments, but that would be so subjective. People would be judged by the judge's taste in music.
I vaguely remember Ted Mack's "Amateur Hour" from 1960... But that had people spinning plates, twirling flaming batons, and playing the Accordion. Plus the cool Dancing Dogs!
But at least they were doing Something Original that requires Talent. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | We haven't had TV for 22 years. The only time we see it is when we're in a hotel room on vacation, and I can tell from that little exposure that we're not missing anything. I have too much real life going on to get caught up in these contrivances designed to sell commercial time.
Did I say I've never seen Idol?

Location: Omaha, NE | I think AI is terrific. Some of the talent is pretty good, but what really shows is how you have to deliver week in and week out. You will see flashes of brilliance from certain singers, but they can't sustain it.
The show has a pretty good track record of finding successful acts...Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Kellie Pickler, David Cook, Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Bo Bice, and Katharine McPhee all started there.
The house guitar player (Paul Jackson, Jr.) is killer. Absolutely first rate. The show is worth watching just for him.
My only real beef with the show is the initial audition process. Some of the contestants that they elect to put on TV are obviously not serious. Putting them on just to ridicule them is somewhat mean-spirited IMHO.
But once they get past that, and have their pool of legitimate contestants, it becomes another show. |

It's just entertainmant. No more or less mind numbing than someone sitting in front of the TV for 3 hours watching a football game or watching a movie that they have already seen 3 times. I know a guy in Kansas who has every Academy Awards show on tape for the last 20 or so years and he actually freakin watches them. He can recite acceptence speeches from memory.
We all have our quirks. I'm actually a HUGE fan of "So You Think You Can Dance". So there you go.

If I watched the damn show I would know that. Have to go out and buy the DVD!
(And the Really amazing thing is... They have whole seasons on DVD! And People Buy Them!) |

To my ear, Chris Daughtry is the best artist that the show has produced. He writes his own songs, some of which are excellent as well as being commercial hits. |

+1 and thanks. I've been wondering what that guy's name is. He's VERY good. I watched last year mostly to see what kind of guitars he'd be playing that night. I'm not a big fan of the silly parts, but when they start getting down to the top 12 or so, I like to watch.
Yeah it's a popularity thing, but it is "pop" music we're talking about here. It is what it is.
Regardless, what a great ride for those young people. It must be an experience of a lifetime. |

Location: Yarmouth, ME / Houston, TX | I will admit my house has watched it every season since the first. There is WAY too much hype around it. But it is fun. Tivo it to get rid of the commercials... espicially the 2 hour shows at the end... they are worth about the last 2 minutes. And as mentioned above, the house guitarist is fantastic! Worth watching for him! |
