anybody care to shed some light on fretboard materials and which are the best. i worked with ebony for awhile for knife handles i made in the old smithy. it was a pain to work with and checks pretty easily. it seems to be a popular fretboard material though. a guy in the band has an old telecaster with a maple fretboard and loves it. i know it boils down to personal preference, but i would apprecate your opinions.

I thinik it's all personal opinion. I prefer ebony, but have black walnut on two guitar which I also like. Hate rosewood. No matter how it's done, it always looks cheap to me. Sorry all you Les Paul players.

Granite. nice and smooth, adds some weight for sustain although it will make the guitar neck heavy. Play it sitting down. Hard to cut the fret slots but easy to play fretless. Nice and cool, keeps your hands from sweating.

We used slate back then but found it wasn't stiff enough

should have tried flint. if all else failed in an owners music career they could make arrow heads from it and hunt for food and prepare it in the left over bowl.
