i saw a pretty beat-up Breadwinner today, with HSC, relatively cheap...thing is, it's been refinished, poorly at that, looks like it was painted with a brush. where do the serial numbers appear on these things? anything in particular i should check for? looks like it would be a decent project, if only to have something different at completion...

The serial number should be on the neck plate. There were several models of Breadwinners and Deacons with different pickups and bridges and pre-amps (or not). If you can post a pic, that would be cool.

BIg pickups are the earlier ones. The smaller 12 polepiece thumbsuckers are the later ones

Bill, what's the deal with the early pickups?
They're single coils, right? yet they're humbucker-sized & have 2 sets of poles. I've seen them referred to as "torroidal" pickups, which would suggest circular coils. Any ideas?
