When I was a teenager in the 60's my dad owned a music store and I talked him into handling Ovations. He wouldn't let me have one to take home (too expensive, "You're eating up the profits, son!)", but I did get to play them in the store. One thing I remember about those large bowls was that on the back, where the bowl met my lap, there were these "slip guards" for lack of a better word. Oval shaped rubber pieces that were flued to the bowl and prevented the bowl from slipping down your lap. I've now looked at some of the newer large bowl models and don't see those anymore. Now the bowl slips down my lap. Question is, why did they quit using those and is there a substitute material that can be applied for that use that anyone knows about?

As opposed to "flued" to the bowl?

Somewhere in the mid to late 70's Ovation started roughing up the area where the rubber pad used to be. This was supposed to solve the problem as the pads would wear out and need to be replaced. I remember needed to replace one on an Artist that I had had about 3 years. Ovation sent me about 5 of them. Peel off the paper back and stick it on!

I think "flued" works..... as in:

"I was sittin there playin away.... hit a Pete Townsend power chord kinda thing..... at the durn guitar just flued right outta my lap...."

Update.... Emailed Ovation Customer Service on Sunday night. Monday morning I had a response from John Budny saying the "non-skid pads" are in stock and that they normally sell for $5 each, but that he's sending me two at no charge. Awesome and amazing!!

Ovation Customer Service is incredibly good about sending out small parts and not charging. Unlike Toyota who wants to charge me $75 for a $2 part. Guess which company gets my repeat business?

Al;

If you have Kim's email address, could you please send it to me?

When I met him at the show he had asked me to send him some pix of my SlotHead, and I completely forgot.

thx.

No problem Paul, I'll email 'em to you.

By the way, I've been informed that we've been specifically asked NOT to post Ovation phone #'s and email addresses here. (my bad!)

I'll send you those pics.

Hello ALL!

I too suffered from owning an older roundback with "skid pad failure" and asked Ovation Customer Service about getting replacements and basically got stiffed. Here is their response (from J.Budny, Ovation Customer Service) and my original inquiry follows.....

There is a rubberized shelf covering material used on boats that works well. Check with hardware stores or maybe a boating shop.

Hello Ovation Guitars,

I am the original owner of a 1615-4 Pacemaker 12 String (electric acoustic) bought in 1974. I love this little slot-head and she has been around the world with me (and will never leave). The rubber anti-slip grip on the back of the guitar has worn away long ago and I've been trying to locate a suitable material to affix to the guitar that would work as well as the original. So far, no luck. Can you help me out?

Thanks and Sincerely,
Ed Blackstock

Ed,
I think John answered your question as you put it to him. We are currently out of the self-adhesive non-skid pads and are looking into having more made. In the mean time, the rubberized shelf lining material John mentioned in his email to you does work well.

Hello ALL!

Thanks Kim for the response. I merely wished to replace the now non-existent pad with an Ovation "product" or one that was designed or approved by Ovation. I'd rather not stick a K-Mart "sticky" on my prized and vintage Ovation. If they are no longer in supply that was all I needed to hear. Then I would have no choice but to resort to a non-Ovation skid pad. As stated earlier, I'd rather use an Ovation product on my Ovation guitar if at all possible.

About the same time you replied, I received a call from "J.B." Ovation Customer Service and he explained that Ovation does not have any more of them and if any at all, there are only a few left. I appreciated J.B.'s honesty and helpful suggestions. That was all I needed to hear. Basically that Ovation doesn't make them anymore, doesn't stock them, and doesn't supply them. That's cool and I can understand that totally. That helps me in my search for a skid pad appropriate for my guitar rather than just something sticky to get me by. For all intents and purposes, bubblebum would do the job but I believe you'd agree that would be the wrong choice. I wish to do it right if I'm going to do it at all.

Sorry if I've offended anyone here or at Ovation. My intent was and is not to do so. Just wanted to know if the pads were available and if I could get a replacement.

Thank You ALL and especially J.B.!

sounds liike he answered the question to me. You did not specifically say you are looking for the pad but for "suitable material"

It never ceases to amaze me how fast people are to jump to judgement and jump down other's throats. I have seen John do minor miracles when he could....as my grandmom would say "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar"

Hello ALL!

I wasn't jumping down anyone's throat. I did feel that if a company took pride in their product and had an existing accessory item available to replace a known "problem item", they would suggest their replacement. OR when that item had been available in the past (as was indicated by Morse's post) and no longer, said company would acknowledge it and move on. Instead, I was just referred elsewhere. During the phone call (w/J.B.) he clarified the issue. He did state that they were available and stock at present was depleted or near depletion. They are planning on having more available but none at this time. He also did state that if he can find one for me, he'd send it out my way.

Let me be crystal clear: At NO time was I jumping down anyone's throat! If you got that vibe, then you are the one who is the jumpy one. RELAX. OKAY? JEEEZE!!!!!!!

Here is the best solution. Go inside the guitar and on the part where it rests on your leg drill some small, maybe .030" holes. About six holes. Next take some 1" roofing nails and glue them into the holes, pointed side out. This should keep the guitar now firmly on your leg.

Alpep, please be so kind as to point out where any of my original post is "almost hostile".

Chuck, thanks for your wisdom. Does such an "improvement" void warranty?

not a problem... I believe it was some words to the effect of "I just got STIFFED by the Ovation service department" then you proceeded with the e mail exchange that completely and fully answers your question.
I call that hostile and perhaps reactionary and ultimately lame.

Hello, Guys. Sorry this string has taken such a bad turn. I think Ovation CS is great and was very generous with me. John B. said he would send me a couple (I have an Elite and an Adamas II). I didn't know that would deplete his stock. Ed, if you email me with your address, I will send you one of the two I get, when they come in. They're only $5 each and I guess they'll be getting some more in. But, Ed, I don't think any offense was intended. Maybe it would be worth a call to John to clear this up.

Hello Al,

First off, get your story straight before sticking your nose into it OK? The email was FIRST. I merely copied my email at the bottom so readers would know exactly what went on. I guess in your case you jumped and made improper assumptions. Your commentary on my post was at first it was "Almost Hostile", now it's "Hostile", but "Perhaps Reactionary" and "Ultimately Lame". Whoaaa, you are THIN SKINNED! Maybe you should take some stress reduction classes or maybe even consider prescription medications (legal of course).

Hello Morse,

Thanks for your kindness. The phone call I got from J.B. earlier today was very pleasant and there was no hard feelings at all on either party during or after the call. J.B. is a true gentleman and we worked this "skid pad" issue out between the two of us. Thanks again for your kind offer. Wonder if "Chuck" has tried the roofing nails in the "R&D" department? I'd love to see some photos...........especially of his leg after he's played for a while! Maybe that's where they get that Red Stain for the tops of some of the roundbacks!

Al,

There is no way in hell that you can deduce my "tone" as being nasty (or any of the other adj. you chose) from just reading my posts. You are the one who is reading way more into it than reasonably should be. Something tells me that you've been having a rough time lately and wanted something to shoot or argue with. Well, since this is basically "your board", I'll not argue with you. If you wish to say that my post looked like a 600,000 mile whore and that my "tone" was NASTY then that is your perception but quite frankly, you're wrong. Go ahead and think and feel what you wish. I'll not argue with you since this is in essence "your living room" and I'll not shit here. Okay? How's that sound? You happy? Hope so.

Although I sometimes don't like what I read, we must all admit.... this is one entertaining spot on the net. Even when folks shoot barbs at each other, it's done with an amount of class. I have been on only a few other boards, and was actually reluctant to start this one... based on the posts in other boards.. pages and pages of things like one person asking "that do you think of such'nsuch" followed by "it sucks" "garbage" and lets not forget.. "what's your age" ... "where do you go to school"... "wanna cyber?"

So all in all... I think we have a well balanced community... I like it here.

No special reason.. just wanted to post this.

Hello ALL and Thanks to John Budny!

As stated, John came through with a "skid pad" for my ancient roundback! Thanks again John! Let me know if I owe you anything for it (I'm more than willing to pay for it).
