I found this BEAUTIFUL Legend (1777 I think) USA Design -- painted like a flag! One salesman tells me they only made 125 of them. Another says they only made 25. Can anyone out there tell me anything about it? It plays BEAUTIFULLY -- like any other Legend. They're charging around $1700 here in San Antonio. Excellent electronics package with it.

I first saw one earlier this year. I know they are limited, and I suspect they are an answer to the patriotic feeling following 9/11. I know that I want one. I know that I can't afford one. I know that I'm bummed.

Thanks moodypi. More importantly, tho, is will the price go down if I wait another six montyhs or so to get it. It is a basic legend -- but it's the paint scheme rthat makes it more sweet!

Is that the one in the Ovation ads w/DJ Ashby?
(Is that the best person they could get??)

$1700's a bit stiff for a Legend, though.

Does anyone know if that flag design is actually "painted" on the top?

I pray to god they didn't "cheese out" and put a digital graphic on there with a coat of clear over it.

You're right -- it is the one with DJ Ashby. There is a coat of clear coat over it. I thought the price was quite steep as well.

Hey guys, you think $1700 is steep? The list on a standard Legend in the UK is around £1700, that's about $2500USD!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw a picture of some country artist (Toby Keith?) who was playing a Takamine with the same paint job.

I thought I heard something about that paint job having been done outside Ovation (for some reason I'm thinking it was PPG, and a pretty hefty pricetag for the paintjob alone). I'm almost positive that wasn't any kind of a decal/photofinish - haven't seen any in person so I can't say for sure. Looks pretty good to me; I've seen things way less cool for way more money lol...

It's an actual paint job -- and a good one too. So you think that's a good price, or should I hold out till it drops to $1100?

OK you guys so give me some intel: The USA Legend shown with DJAshby on the Ovation page appears to have pearl buttons, as does the one from Music123. But the one on e-bay appears to have the gold buttons. ANyone have any intel on this? I am tempted to bid on the one on E-bay.

Don't worry about the color of the tuning buttons. Bid on the one on ebay up to where you feel comfortable and see what happens.

OK, I checked with a reliable source.
they made 75 and these listed at $2599 They blew through them.
Now it's available as a special order for $3299 list a pop. It's been well recieved too.
I don't know how it's done but It is probably a stencil pattern and painted on individually for each guitar. The ones I've seen are really well done. But you have to ask yourself, do I want this on my guitar in 5-10 years from now? How easy will it be to get rid of the instrument then and for how much?

I hate to sound cynical, but does patriotism only last 5-10 years? Some people will buy this guitar as a trend and to be cool. Others will buy it because they happen to love both the flag and Ovations.

Moody the flag motif goes in cycles I think that is what cwk was trying to say. I would love to find out what happened to Fred sonic Smith;s flag painted tele.

I understand Al. I've just never followed cycles. About every 8-9 years my hair is of stylish length as the styles move past me one way or another.

I'd play a guitar like that forever.

They're probably airbrushed using computer-cut transparent "friskets" in four passes: white, red, blue and then black.

I'm wondering how they'll look when they "age".

What's matta!

Did'n chu have a big old Chevy van widda' friggin' dragon painted on da' side in da' '70's??

"Friskets" (no, NOT cat food!!!) were basically "stencils" used in airbrushing. Frisket paper was (is) like tracing paper (only a LITTLE thicker) and has a light "stickiness" to the backside. You stick it down over your artwork, sketch out the next "shape" you want to airbrush (since it's thin you can see through it), cut the shpe out lightly with an X-acto knife, and then paint.

Nowadays with the advent of computer technology, simple patterns (like the flag motif) can be run off "en masse" and airbrushed one color at a time.
The same technology is used (with a thicker rubber material) for sandblasting cemetery monuments. There aren't THAT many guys that carve stone by hand any more. In my industry (we have about two dozen offices nationwide), I'm probably one of a handful of people that can still hand letter a sign. A dying art.

Not trying to be cynical here with the 5-10 year thing. If you like it and it's you, go for it. It's just that I've never been inclined to wear feelings on my sleeve, whatever they may be. Events like what happened will push things past normal limits and I see SO many people waving flags, houses, cars, clothes, guitars, amps, anywhere. I'm not saying this is bad, just that this is way past what the norm has been. Will things go back to what they were before?(the appathetic public) Hard to say, but judging from the past things will tend that direction. We probably won't go all the way back to pre 9-11 but somewhere in between.
My only point was that while I'd be moved to play a guitar like that now, in the future somewhere I might be moved to play something different that is pertinent to that time frame.

cwkII, I understand exactly how you feel. I'm not a fanatically redneck, I don't follow trends, and I tend to laugh at life a lot more than being intense about my beliefs.

But I've always gotten a bit misty eyed when it comes to the flag. I'm one of the few in my neighborhood who flys it every day. I don't know why, it's just something that I feel strongly about. Doesn't make me better or worse than my neighbors. It just makes me, well, me.

I agree with Bill.
While I feel that it's ABOUT TIME that there was some type of overwhelming pride in the country/flag. I think that it should also be tempered with respect and good taste.

Yes, on Sept. 15th I called the flag/banner manufacturer that I deal with in San Antonio to order myself a custom made flag for the balcony of my apartment. I fly it proudly and respectfully. But I also fly it in accordance to the rules for flying a U.S. flag. The landscape's become proliferated with dirty, sooty, faded, frayed flags that have wrapped themselves around a cheap pole and haven't been touched since Christmas. On more occasions than I'd care to count I've stopped in the midst of my "rush hour crawl" to pick up a cheap tattered flag on it's snapped, cheesy plastic standard to bring it home to dispose of properly. NO flag, no matter how expensive or well made can stand up to being buffetted to 60+ mph winds. Do me a favor and buy a magnetic flag decal for your tailgate, and if you MUST fly a flag from a vehicle - buy a friggin' SAILBOAT!

The only thing I found more sickening than walking the perimeter of Ground Zero was the cheap, tacky, disrespectful merchandise being hawked by nefarious people who couldn't speak the language but could readily make change (because they weren't charging sales tax).

(Sorry about the soapbox)

Is the Adamas site "up" yet?

I appreciate all your input. Sooo ... should I get it now and pay $1600 for it, or should I wait a year or so and buy it used for half the price?

Dear Folks:

I agree with Alex (Alpep). Whatever happened to good old normal, humble, genuine, quiet American patriotism? What was once a simple gesture has now become what I call a "war of the flags"...my flag is bigger and wider than yours, so I'm more patriotic than you! (ad nauseum, ad nauseum.)

Just my two cents on this issue.

Proud to be an American and lover of things Ovation!

There were just under 100 flag models made.

Of all the post 9-11 patriotic guitar jobs this one is about the nicest, and is worth every penny of the price. That is especially true when you look at some of the other attempts, including that liberty tree thing.

It is a true custom paint job and very well done. It looks as nice up close as it does from a distance.
