Location: SoCal | I'm finding that this year, for the first time, I'm paying attention to the set up of my guitars. When I got my rebuilt 87 C back from the factory, I pulled a shim then tightened the neck about 3/4 of a turn. It plays like a dream.
When I borrowed Noah's 30th CL, the action was good, but the break over the saddle was almost non existant. I brought the saddle up a little and tightened the neck a little over half a turn to bring it back a bit. Action's good and sounds like a million bucks.
Last week, I was playing my 1773LX nylon string and realized that the action was very high and I had never adjusted it. So I pulled a shim out from under the saddle (there were 4 thick shims under there) and brought the neck back a bit (half turn). I may bring it back a little more, but it plays much better now.
What I'm finding is that for me, the saddle height should be where the black rails of the OPP saddle are about even with the front of the bridge. Then the rest of the action can be adjusted by the truss rod (this probably assumes that the guitar is in good shape with no neck problems).
I like action that doesn't buzz but has a good break over the saddle.
What are others thoughts about this stuff? I fully admit that I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I figure that with the small amount I'm adjusting the neck, I can't really screw it up too badly.......

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | I am one for setting up my guitars meticulously , adjusting nut/neck/saddle is a first , then , " truss adjustment " doing that at least twice a year .
At first as a whole , then according to HUMIDITY , even with O`s , which are known to be rather stable in the truss department.
Change of string-gauge can be another cause.
Using big gauges ( at minimum 12 - 54 ) usually 13 - 56 ( 57 ) , guitars tend to react abruptly , even O`s.
Even my 1537 ( the Very Best git O` ever has made ) , can have the " jitters " when it comes to " Big Bore Gauge " and , Humidity , when ease of Playability is required.
No , I do not suffer of arthrytis , but my fingertips have " soft skin " , so , playability is something that I`m concerned about.

What's the minimum recommended height of saddle over bridge? Am gradually lowering saddle on the AA-31 but there's not much saddle height left... |
