I need to have action adjusted on Ovation Custom Legend. I've seen the scematics showing 3 shims. Is this something that can be done by the non-luthier (meaning me)? Can someone tell me how to remove the saddle and shims? Or... can you recommend a repair place in Orange County California that is experienced with Ovations? I have read Ovation's publication of authorized repair facilities. Some I know about and wouldn't take my guitar there for for all the tea in China (tea in China?). Others I would explore only if recommended by an Ovation owner. Your advice?

Its easy realy, no need for a Luthier.
I do it by removing the strings, (letting the tension off slowly on alternate strings), pull up saddle at the 1st string end, being carefull not to pull the pick up wire out too much on the 6th string end, check out what shims you have, remove one at 1st, fit 1st and 6th string on, tune up and see what action you have, remove another shim if you feel the need, then refit all the strings, this assumes that the neck bow is set correctly.
I got my Adamas Milennium set up real nice with Adamas 1818 strings, low action, no buzz, plays wickedly :D
At least for an amatuer, i can play loads of diff barr chords up the neck with no probs.

Thanks Gary. Maybe you can answer another question. I notice that the strings sound on both sides of the fret used when playing up the neck. In other words, I can hear the normal "sound hole side" string tone AND the higher pitched, off-key tone as if the string were plucked between the left hand fingers (for right handed players)and the nut.

I don't notice this with my other guitars. It is most noticeable above the 8th fret and when playing "plugged in". Very annoying! Can this be fixed?

Thanks.

There's a guy in Tustin named Paul Stebner who is an authorized Ovation repair guy. His phone number is 714/544-8350. He's good, but busy. I took an Ovation Viper to his last Thursday and he won't get to it until 7/11. But give him a call and take your guitar in. He can probably take a look at it and tell you what's wrong with it. Then if it needs repair, can schedule it for you.
