If I'm liein' I diein' - I met with Larry, back in '76 here in Dallas when he played at the Granada theater. He sat center stage alone with a couple acoustics and a mic. The sad part is that there was hardly 50 people there including myself. As big as that place was, I sat way back in the balcony on the last row to get the total effect of the sound of those puppy's he was playing. That boy can play a dead moose and make it sound good. I don't remember what he had with him only that it made me practice more and more. Sat backstage with him and that man said some things to me that I'll never forget. Mainly that he did not mind so few people there, and that he saw me way back there, and that he was playing to MY row. "I play my best whether there is 100 or 1 person in the place." These people come to see me play, who knows from where and how they got here, I play my ass off for 'em, let me tell ya brothers. I was not worthy." I had a camera, but did not take any pictures of him to show you, because like I said , "I was not worthy" and for the respect I have had for what I learned about performing. Go out there and break a leg, even if there ain't but 1 person out there. I just had to share this with you. I do hope Larry is doing fine today, and hope you liked his show too. Feel free to read my Home page.

I saw Larry & son's in Boston Aug 2000. It was a "small" room, I didn't know the "Group" but got tickets for an aniversery night out. It was special. If they show up in your area... It's worth the ticket. And yes, THEY can play.

Larry is a great player and a great person. He lives in Florida now and endorses Cort, not sure what the deal is cause you gotta know it's not for the quality of the guitar.

Where have all the endorsees gone?
Long time passing
Ovation, where have all the endorsees gone?
They're long gone for sure.............

The Coryell Cort thing really is a headscratcher. And if in fact he's still with them, then it's been a good while. Can't see where he's put Cort on the map .

I have an old 1976 catalog, on the front it says "The guitars of the stars" and it's covered front & back in pictures of endorsees. There's a list of 47 acts on the back cover, of those about 28 are either as big as ever, still reasonably memorable or still alive. Of those 28, Joan Armatrading is the only one you'd currently associate with the company. It has to be said she's been fiecely loyal & must have been responsible for selling a lot of guitars. Back then if you needed a good acoustic that would work onstage Ovation was the only choice. Takamine were just happening about then & if I remember correctly they scored a major & very credible endorsment coup with Ry Cooder, but by 1980-ish every company on the planet had an electro-acoustic to compete. That artist rosta was very much of the time, but spoke volumes about the company compared to the current crop of endorsees.

The plan is chill, guitar, golf, guitar, golf, travel, guitar, golf, chill, guitar, golf. That should take care of the first year. Then repeat as nexcessary for the next thirty.
It's a beautiful thing.....................

Yeah, but if I ever got to Florida, I was going to look you up and let you buy the first round (of golf). Now it's gonna be a little tougher. Oh well.

Paul, Amelia Island is waiting for you, 14 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and 6 courses. Come on! My schedule should be pretty free for the next several years. I have a standing invite from Larry (to get back to the topic) to play down where he is, around Vero Beach. Haven't gotten to it yet but will this winter for sure. You're welcome to join in.

Bill, I'm very envious of your new lifestyle, except for the "golf" part.

Paul, Cliff,
Thanks. I did the equlivent of selling a music store to Guitar Center. I sold to Signature Flight Support, the biggest of the FBO chains. Now when the phone rings at night I don't think about airplanes and fuel trucks and all that could go wrong. Not that it ever did, but you still think about those things.
This having nothing to do will take a few more minutes to get used to but I'm working at it. And as Aurthur said, it doesn't suck!

You'll probably find yourself busier than ever, except it will be things you want to do instead of things you have to do. Also your puppy will expect much more attention as will others. Life will be good.

i finally found the old thread bill. sounds like the plan my man. except for the golf and the country it sounds like here. by now i hope those old "pressure" days are just a memory now and that your late night calls are about a great jam session you are needed for.

i guess this explains why you didn't get the e-mails i sent to your gas station. i'll use the aol address from now on.

This thread popping up is just too coincidental... I mean of course the part about Larry Coryell. It just so happens he'll being playing at the Dakota Bar and Grill here in the Twin Cities on 9/19 and thanks to the knowledgable folks here at OFC, I'm taking the time to attend this "One Night Stand with the Godfather of Fusion" (that's what's on the bill) and I want to know if there's anything I need to know before the show?? I haven't heard him before and I'm not familiar with his music. Thanks in advance for any input :)

-Rich

P.S. He's playing with Mark Egan (bass) and Paul Wertigo (drums).

It should be a great show. What to expect? Well Larry can be unpredictable but he's always entertaining. Tell him we all say hello and give him my personal regards.
