Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | We all know a lot of folks play Ovations. I decided to see who the current artists were. On the Ovation site there are about 17 artists listed. Only two or three are real well known but not a bad list all in all. I decided to see who some of the other guitar companies have listed..
- The Taylor site has hundreds and many famiiar names in all genre's of music.
- Couldn't find any Rainsong endorcements.
- Fylde has an impressive list with some VERY impressive names.
- C.F. Martin as expected also has an impressive list with familiar and impressive names.
Not sure where I'm going with this, but most of the other manufactures have some long lists with very noticable and noteable "guitarists" listed. Ovations list is short, several names that I would not associate as even playing a guitar, let alone an acoustic one, and the #1 artist consideres herself a singer/songwriter not so much a "guitarist/musician."
I was never a big Glenn Campbell fan, but he was known as a guitar player.. A singer/songwriter too, but a guitar player. I also noticed that at least two of the artists on the list from Ovation were the ones endorsing The Tangent and one is even pictured with it (whoops).
Like I wrote earlier, I'm not sure where I am going with this, but I think there are a lot of folks playing Ovations, and I would think it would not be that hard to get some CURRENT artists to endorse Ovation guitars. |

Okay, Taylor/Martin/yada-yada have "Who's Who" laundry lists of endorsees that they've acquired/bought.
Do any of these companies have 400-member international FanClubs/MessageBoards/SecretSocieties such as this one comprised of everyday Joe Schmurds who are equally passionate about the instruments they own/play or even "care"?
I think we need to get some white jumpsuits with "O" logos on the back and some black bowler hats and canes.
What say you, my "Droogies"? |

Some of the best guitarists I have ever met and listened to don't have any CD's, don't play concerts, and nobody (other than friends and family) has any idea they play.... and none of them were "bought." wouldn't it be cool if Kaman could connect with all those people?.... ahhh never mind, Martin already did that.... still ... Like it was mentioned before, with all the artists out there now, sure would be nice to find out who is playing Ovation..... maybe we could find photos of artists playing Ovation and start our own who's who gallery... |

I was reverting to the original European version of "Schmurd".
In 1910 or so, Ellis Island immigrants were changed to "Schmerd". |

Ovation Guitars are excellent studio guitars as pointed out by Paul T. (our connection to the islands, who's wisdom and insight has contributed greatly ). Maybe the company should provide complimentary guitars to the major studios, sorta like the computer companies did in the schools. I would bet that most players would be curious and try them out, especially if the studios had them set up for recording. If the stars could be enticed into buying an Ovation as their guitar for recording, they might find out it was easier to feed into the board at jobs, etc. Maybe 400 voices could convince the company to do something like this.
(and we can all start a studio and get the guitar of our choice.) Is this idea sounding better now?

I just watched the biography of promoter Bill Graham on A&E, and I think I saw Peter Frampton playing a slothead Ovation at a 70's concert. Anybody know anything about this?
I want a US made mandolin for my studio, which is small, but a mandolin is small also, so the company shouldn't miss it.

| I thought you might be interested to know, since it seems that most people here are interested in knowing what famous people play ovation guitars, I'm personally not a big fan (although she is really hot) that Shakira before she made an album in english she was already big in latin america and in a video from one of her singles from her debut album she appears with an ovation.
I also have a question sort of related. Has anyone (remotely) famous joined this club ever? |

In the "Wings Over America" tour in 1976, Paul McCartney and Denny Laine used Ovations for the acoustic set -- the used Legends. In afct, Mac still uses an O. And Denny Laine -- he dropped off the map. |

The magazine features two pictures of Paul, one with what appears to be a Custom Legend 6-string, the other a Custom Legend 12-string. Also shows Denny playing an O. Can't be too recent because Linda's in the picture also, but it's great seeing Mac play the same model O that I have; helps justify it to the wife. |

I do a search before I mention the sighting and if it has been mentioned before I don't repeat it unless it has some new information. I think a site like this should be a reference, so if someone thinks a "star" played an Ovation, a search might give them some information. I've noticed that each time a well known player has been mentioned, somebody will provide the model etc. that was played. To me, old or new player information is valuable, it gives some insight into the state of the instruments over time.

The McCartney pix in Guitar World Acoustic were from the "Wings Over America" tour. (As an aid to "justification", you might want to mention to your wife that Linda custom ordered that guitar for Paul as a birthday present!).
McCartmey has been in the Martin camp as of late.
(No doubt a left-handed PMcC Signature Model won't be long in coming.) |

Location: Shelton, Washington, USA | In keeping with the vein.... I just went through the most recent Guitar World Acoustic (Sheryl Crow on the cover)... didn't see a single O. Not even in the advertisements. How depressing... This week's homework, class.... everybody keep your eyes open for current artists using O's. Make a note of it and bring it back here for show & tell. With almost 400 of us here, we should be able to find a few O players out there... Then we just need to find a way to get KMC to acknowledge those artist and take a capitalistic exploitative approach with marketing... |

You're depressing me. Maybe it's to a point with Ovation where they just don't feel the need to get the good guitars out there. Maybe they are doing so well with the Korean models that they have no incentive to push the USA models. Maybe I should leave this computer for a while and go play some guitar. Now I'm depressing me. |

Strange you should mention compiling a list of well known Ovation players. I was thinking about it all day, as to how a search might be done, but I don't think it is that easy because there is nothing common to each mention of a user. I think the only way to do it is to review each posting while the number of postings is manageable and pulling each reference and entering into a database. After that, each valid reference should be entered when it shows up. I'll take a crack at it in the next few days by using the off line feature of Explorer and Windows weak multi-tasking capability so I can transfer the information as I find it. No guarantees, but I'll try it. Any suggestions are welcome.

Paul was funny about guitars. The deal was he'd buy them and we could use the picture but we could never use his name in print. I guess that way it wasn't a real endorsement or whatever. Linda did order the guitars as a suprise for his birthday.
If they come out with a Martini PMC then we'll know he's changed his tune. |

| One thing that can be said of the Ovation artist list is it is at least honest.
I looked up the Taylor artist list and it was hillarious. I think they listed everybody who was in the same room with one at some point in their life. They list artists who I have seen dozens of times both on TV and live and they never played a Taylor.
If Ovation lists an artist you can at least say, yep, I saw them with an O |
