Well I guess you knew this post was coming. I always seem to celebrate the little victories. Maybe once we reach 500 I will only bore you evey 500 new members LOL.
To say that this mark amazes me is an understatement. I am really glad that you have joined our "club" and post and pick up and exchange information.
I find this message board to be a unique one. There is little flaming and the nonsense that I see on other message boards on the internet. YOU all should be proud of that.
Some of you have wondered outloud if your opinion counts and if you can make a difference. Let me assure you it does and it can. I had several conversations with various people in the Ovation organization at the Namm show and it is an absolute YES that they do read this message board and consider what is said here. (maybe KMC would like to finance the addition I need on my house??? just teasing) The two new guitars offered at the summer Namm show the elite T and the limited edition folklore are in response to those board members that wanted an affordable USA made entry level instrument and an instrument that was more like the original deep bowl acoustic instruments. That is your influence going to work.
I know I keep saying that Miles and I have plans for the OFC and in time they will come. My only request as usual is that you be kind to one another.

Kudos and accolades are in order for you! It certainly takes a great deal of time and effort to keep this going. Lurkers, such as myself, benefit greatly, and assuredly, appreciate it.

My I say Congrats also to the Ovation Fan Club. I found it by tripin' over it on the 5th of July. As I see it - 40 new members came in right behind me in a total of 15 days. I'm going out on a limb and lay odds that we hit 500 by the middle of August. Moving Up - Moving On

"Tripping over it" would be a good way to discribed the way I found it...I know nothing about web site design but is there not some way to make is show up in general internet searches? For example, typing in 'Ovation Deacon' in a search should bring a dozen hits leading to here but it dosen't.
Other than that, it's great, I love it, I check in at least a couple times a day...Paul M P.I., if you happen to 'investigate' up a life out there somewhere, pass it along to me would ya?

Wayne: I think we're both up the creek on that one. Is the high bidder on the truss rod cover you?

I found this website when Ovation still had a link to it. Too bad they still don't.

Al, Miles, a job well done.
To all the rest, also a job well done. Let's keep doin it! There is alot of good information given, and some fun had, and not much of the BS and knob waving that happens else where.
Now I'm off to find a Yugo.........

Thanks to everyone. I had a feeling that "eventually" this would catch on, but could not have predicted the recent growth levels. I agree that we will probably see 500 by late August, and most likely 1000 by New Years.

I have heard that the expanded FAQ is on it's way. The member gallery will not be far behind that.

As far as search engines go, that just happens (depending on the search engine) by folks using the site, linking to it, and entering it as a search. The important pages are loaded with keywords to attract the bots that comb the web in the wee hours looking for pages to index. I'd say at the new average of 100+ members per month, people are finding us.

Thanks again for all of the support, and kudos to all for creating a little community on the web based on great musical instruments, and respect for each others opinions.

I ran across OFC from Miles' site, which I ran across searching for solidbody information. It's now at the top of my favorite places and I find myself here a couple times a day. Great site, great conversation.

CWK2 - I think we may have a mutual friend in Morganton, NC. Mr Earwood ring a bell?

Congrats

It's a super site, and I'm addicted. 500 will surely appear shortly, all marching towards a better life for us string music lovers. Already we see some improvements. I'm disappointed however that there was absolutely no mention of a shiny deep roundback, acoustic/electric 12 string banjo at NAMM(slothead-I forgot slothead!). That shows that they aren't listening to us at all.

12 string Banjo? who'd play a monster like that. Only one I know would be Roy Clark. I'd pay to see that, if there is one I want to see a pic of it - Bailey. :D
Also would like to welcome #407 member coming from all the way from down Mexico way in Chiapas. See? They are coming from all over to be Ovation Fan Club members -

If, (by current indications) Ovation IS reading this and (somewhat) responding to our opinions/suggestions, have they made ANY hint of some type of "reciprocity"?

There are a lot of companies that spend boatloads of money on market analysis, demographic studies, etc. and here they have free access to over 400 "lab rats" (some of which 2nd generation) that pretty much have the product ingrained in their DNA and would like nothing better than seeing both the product AND the company SUCCEED.

I'm not suggesting any freebies, discounts, or preferrential treatment (although it would be NICE), but just the simple aspect of reinstating the link from their web page (which hasn't been upgraded since early 2001) to ours. That alone would save THEM from being innundated with e-mail questions that they can't/WON'T respond to.

No offense to them, but it seems that there is more current/credible information HERE than on their own page. There were two new guitars debuted at the recent NAMM show. WHO'S webpage did they premiere on? Those guitars SHOULD have been on their page the first morning of the show!
If you scroll through the current product listings, you'll notice TOO MANY guitars with "No Photo Available". C'mon!, you don't have a PHOTO of something you MAKE?!?! Don't even get me started on the Adamas (their "flagship" model) webpage that's STILL "Coming Soon..."!!

My opinion:
They've got a 400+ Reference/Initial Technical Support Team/Field Public Relations Department that's FREE and does nothing more than encourage others to CONSIDER and at least TRY their product(s) with an open mind/ear. I think it behooves them to not offer a link to a site that can only help them succeed.

(Sorry for the rant, . . . . I gotta switch to Dunkin' Donuts "Unleaded".)

What's the point of drinking coffee if you're gonna drink unleaded?

I agree Cliff. If nothing else, they should at least have a link on their page to this one. The enthusiasm that they don't generate is right here. A link would be good for them as well as good for us.

Miles has told me that that link is back up on their page but I'll be damned if I can find it Or maybe it was going to be put back up on a special links page (which I can't find either)
Miles suggested that the link should not go on the ovation home page but on a links page. I do not agree with this but I am not an I.T. guy. I am just an idiot with a bunch of guitars.

The last incarnation of the webpage (a couple of years ago) had this whole "Club Ovation" section which was (I thought) pretty cool. At least it offered some info and a little extra stuff.

To me, the current page design is pretty lame.

Yes the "Club Ovation" was pretty cool... Not sure why it went away, I still use my graphite KeyChain. but I guess as a corperate effort it didn't fly. And yes, there is a link to the OFC from Ovation... I guess they keep moving things around as they design, but just click on "Customer Service" then on FAQ and it's right there.
Although having the link on their homepage was kinda cool... would you hang a big sign on the front door of your buisness telling people to go elsewhere before they even come inside to look around.... I think not... Besides.. Appearently it's in an excellent place as OVER 90% of our visitors got here by clicking on the link at Ovation.
Just as an FYI, we have 400+ members, but have probably the same number of lurkers. Pretty kewl...

As mentioned in a previous post.. Ovation DOES have a link to us, and in fact 90%+ of our traffic comes from it. It's under Support and FAQ. It's in an excellent spot obviously. Remember, if you are looking for the link now, you have some knowledge, and would not be approaching it like someone looking for the first time. Go to OvationGuitars.com and look around like you knew NOTHING about it.. and you will eventually learn lots of cool info and end up at the FAQ, which amoung other things... points here. Compared to most sites, I think they are using a very forward thinking approach, which after 20+ years in the IT world... is nice to see.

That's good to hear, Miles.

By the way, how's the CD Project going?

Received any entries yet?

I've got two consecutive weekends off from the band (finally!) and I've made it a personal goal to get the four-track out and get my ass on tape no matter what it takes (unless of course there are nice beach days! - hey! I can always record at night!!).

Not as many folks are signed up as I expected, but there is still time. I will send an eMail out in mid August about getting the tracks to me. Should be pretty cool. At that time we will also have a member-wide vote on the title and get the artwork going.

As mentioned earlier several times... they DO HAVE A LINK TO US.. It is under support in the FAQ section. It is the perfect place as many of the 400+ we have here, found us via that link. Also the stats on our server indicate many folks are clicking to here from their link.
As far as support from Ovation, they have been very gracious to both Al and I in getting info to us and answering questions etc. I can't address their web page content. I met their web mistress and she is on the ball, however, coming from an IT background I will say, things that we can get away with as a "public site" are a little more difficult in the corperate sector. Just as an example.. I took a picture of Al holding a guitar at a show. No problem. I did not have to contract a photographer and pass the legal mumbo jumbo back and forth via the lawyers for rights to take a picture and have that "art" posted on the web by a corperation. That doesn't even address the writer, the marketing department approvals, the proofing and the actual development. Further... are these guitars available to the public yet? If they are not, than they shouldn't be up. Remember, NAMM is NOT a public event. These insturments may not be available for months to come.

Hmmmmm I feel a rant coming on.......
If it sound like I'm defending the corp... in a way I am. I was in that position for many years at different companies. There can ALWAYS be more content, and BETTER design.. etc etc etc.. but it takes time and money and has to go through many of the hoops that just putting up a web page does not. You will notice this site is useable on any browser on any platform. That is a consideration of corperations also. I do this work out of a love of programming and creating sites that are useful, and of course.. the content of Ovation guitars. I shudder to think how much I would have to pay a team to do this to my specs. I'm used to working with website budgets in excess of $1 mil. closer to 2. That's a lot of jack for a guitar company. I think they do a fine job.. but I agree the Adamas site could use a little spruce-up.. However..... If the Q is on it's way out, then they may be directing efforts towards that instead of the already existing Adamas.
.... ok... jumping off soapbox..

Was that Al? I thought it was Dusty - from ZZ TOP....

Also Miles: Thank You for all you have done for this Ovation Fan Club. In my book you can get on that soap box and let me know exactly what is going on at anytime you feel those unleaded donuts kickin' in - O.K?. I DO enjoy reading everything you have to say and always will. So, with that said, Al what tune were you playing when the pic was taken?

400+ members sounds real good, but there seems to be a little fact that is sliping by the main members of this site. I joined a few weeks ago after buying a used Ovation Balladeer. I had a few questions about it, so I posted here. The first post I made still has not received a response from anyone. The second post I made has had only one response. I have noticed at least one other new member that has not received an answer to any of her 4 questions.

I ask that the regular members take a look down once in a while, and look for those postings that have no answers, or maybe just one or two answers, and reply to them. From looking through the postings here, a lot of you have a lot of knowledge, not only on Ovations in general, but as musicians. Please, make the new members feel welcome. Make them feel that if they post a question, they will get lots of good answers, not just one, or none at all.

I am in the US Navy, and don't hav much longer before I start my six month deployment. While I am gone, I will not be able to hit any web sites, but will only have access to e-mail. However, I felt a need to express my feelings here while I can. Time to get off my soap box now.

Chuck:

I went back and took a look at your question. Paul T. answered it, and you said thanks, that you'd try his suggestions. Mr. T. pretty well covered what the hum could be, either amp or cable, usually not the pickup or preamp.
Was there something else? Always feel free to speak up here. If it's important to you, eventually somebody will answer.

As to the girl's question, if it's who I think, I and from what I understand, several others answered her in private email, which she requested. And she did get her problem solved.

Anything else?

Chuck, 1st of all may I say thank you for your service in the Navy and your tour may it be a safe and successful one for us here who support our troops all over the globe.
I have posted since the 5th, to find out about my GC 1127-4 M-293 and have had a great time trying to get mine settled. It's getting to where I DON"T want to find out, cause then the thrill will be gone, and I won't enjoy the great company that I'm addict'd to now. I'd like to respond technically to some, but I'm a player, not like some of these members who know not only to play 'em but to repair them also. I can work on them, but can not give advice. I do teach guitar and would gladly help any one with any Rock & Roll questions. I know all of Kwik's songs, cause I played bars since I was 16. Just don't ask me about "La Bamba" cause I might go Postal. Ask Al - he loves that tune. - web pageGC signatureOvation1127-4 M(mom)-293

Hey Chuck,
Hi and welcome to the site. I, too, would like to thank you for your service to our country.
I read your first post, and short of telling you how to look up the date of manufacture of your american made guitar (by reading the serial number) I don't know what else there really is share with you. And your post was short on specifics-
I don't know enough about guitars and amps to address the buzzing you mentioned in your second post- but then again, I'm on the lower end of totem pole as far as knowledge and experience with Ovations, and maybe your message wasn't aimed at me to begin with... so maybe this really just some kind of acknowledgement, disguised as a wordy reply :)
Did I mention I just got back from spending the evening at a coffee shop??? LOL

Hi Chuck,
First let me add my thanks for your service to this country - good luck on your tour.

The main thing that impresses me about this board is that most of the time questions are answered pretty quickly by someone who is an expert - some other boards are just a closed circle of friends who ignore or "flame" a new person - these people KNOW Ovations and will do their best to help, I am not qualified to answer most questions, but have learned a lot, and seen the "passion" for Ovations here - and no "my guitar is better than yours" snobbery, even the polite way you worded your "complaint" is different - more like a group of friends talking than someone safe to "attack" from behind a keyboard.

I think a lot of questions are answered by private post - might be a good thing to also post a reply on the board? One thing that should be pointed out is that there is a very good "search" function (see the upper right corner) - a lot of questions have already been discussed (NOT an excuse for not welcoming you and trying to answer your question, just pointing out a useful feature).

This board is 400+ people ranging from a retired gas station owner to an old biker, with everything in between - I am sure there are other boards that work this well, but most I have found do not. Sorry if your question "fell through the cracks", thanks for pointing out a possible problem, look forward to "seeing" you again when your tour is over - and after a short time here YOU will be answering questions.

Taking your guitar with you? - I have heard they make good paddles....

Hey Coyote and anyone else reading...
Good points on all... I wonder if I am being refered to as "the old biker?" Anyway, I think we all try to answer the questions we know the answer too. That's what I really like here. Very soon (I have been told) I will have the content for a searchable FAQ. Basically a complilation of all of the questions and answers from the board so far in a simple searchable format. They have been edited out of the posts so that you just get the Q & A. Of course if one wants to read all the extra stuff and conversation, they can at least find it by searching on an actual phrase from the FAQ.

By the way... I spent 14 years in the US Navy before I decided to go out and get a real job. I never looked back, but I do miss it sometimes. "Every day is a Navy day, and every meal a banquet. The only way is Haze Grey and Underway!!!"

Hey Miles,
if I let you have "old biker" then I will have to claim the title of "worst player" (as good as I ever was - still know the same 3 chords...).

Maybe a contest for the "title": how bad do YOU limp?

Jim...

members would turn up - maybe best we do not

I know it ain't me, I still got the training wheels on mine......

Coyote, I agree with you brother. Lately I went into a "Guitar Player" chat room, and WAS basically sicken'd by the Beavis and Butt/head attitudes all those wanna/be's had. And not to mention ego, the room was about to explode. Went there out of curiousity and stay'd long enough to NOT say anything. Just reading the ___- (fill this in yourself), I can now say, and you can Take This to the Bank<>
That there is no place like Ovation Fan Club. Here you can get answers (except for MINE) about (M)possibly for mom on my Ovation, just about 99% of the time, with some good humor and pun for texture. I'd say that if you don't find it there, you will sure get some answer from, Al,Bailey,Miles,Cw2, Paul,Tommy,Craig, among more who normally are the go too guys here, with shoot from the hip answers and unlead'd attitudes, if you know what
I mean.

Wow, is the brown showin' on my nose now?

I love this woom...... It's like family here

We mostly shoot from the lip here.

The M doesn't stand for Mother but a recent rhumor has it that it stands for Miles. When he went AWOL from the navy he was caught in a barroom brawl and sentenced to two years indentured servitude at the factory. It was him who started the M series of serial numbers.

Bill's just not gonna let this "M" thing go, is he?

As to the worst player, I know it's not me as I can now go from a C to a G chord in under thirty seconds. Beat that!!

p.s. Anybody know how that D chord goes? If I can get that, I can play a whole song. Slowly.

Hey, Paul...

The "D" chord is easy. But I can do it with all four fingers of my left hand and fingerpick those strings.

Gizz & All

Chuck, thank you for serving your country, and keep letting us know what is going on in today's Navy.

I an sure that the M in Gizz's guitar was an advanced message from the Marti(a)ns, warning of an impending attack as soon as they had a semblance of the technology from their infiltration of the factory. They always give you hidden warning, if the CIA sees this they will probably confiscate the guitar, please send it to me for safekeeping. So please don't say that all questions aren't answered, you have to read between the lines.

Also, La Bamba comes in a distant second to Orange Blossom Special as the most played song, I think I have heard it done by Julliard string quintets (in waltz time)to show they are in touch with us ordinary hillbillies.

Good Bailey, the LESS I hear that stupid song the better. I'll take Orange Blossom Special any time over it, cause that tune makes my hair hurt big time.
As for the Martians, It's possible, it can happen. I'll rent it to you Bailey.

I see I stirred things up here. Thanks for all the responses, and the appreciation for my Naval service. I will be taking my Balladeer with me on the cruise, and hopefully, improving my undeveloped playing skills.

I see where several questions have been answered by private post. Looking from where I sit, it ends up looking like the questions were not answered, or they received very little information back. Please consider posting your answer, and sending a copy to the individual as well. That way they get their answer, and everyone else sees the answer as well. One thing I did when I found the link on the Ovation web site was to go back and read as many of the posts as possible. I learned quite a bit from this.

I will take more time to be more specific in what I am asking. I enjoy conversing here with Ovation fans, instead of some of the bashing that goes on in the newsgroups, although the newsgroups do have some good information once in a while after I weed through all the junk.

Is there any documentation that comes with a new Ovation? Such as how to care for it, recommended batteries for the preamp, how to use the preamp. I tried to put a Duracell in my Balladeer, but it got stuck part way in, as did two other standard household name batteries I tried. What is the best way to care for the wood finish? I have a 1711 Balladeer with a natural finish.

Hopefully this clarifies my earlier question.

Chuck, as for taking care of yur puppy. From my own experience. Keep it in the case and lock'd if possible since you will be on a ship. DON'T lend it out to ANY one what so ever. Just think of it like loaning your lawn mower to your neighbor and he puts gas in the oil, and oil in the gas and don't ever bring it back. And keep it on a stand if you can, and clean the strings off when you're thru with it, will extend life a bit longer. Don't forget to take a couple of extra sets with you. Cut off the excess , or roll 'em neatly at the head so's not to scratch it. And most of all, common sense....
Enjoy it, and may it last you a long time

my $.o2 cents for all its worth...

Notice it didn't take them long to forget all about their music CD, now they are talking dvd's etc. Sounds like their music studios will soon resemble the playboy mansion. They need to get back to the guitar method discipline before they are lost.

We can discuss this disturbing trend over candle light and champagne some time, they seem rather juvenile.

Bailey (Rico y Suave)

I know candle light and champagne works cause next month is our 45th anniversary, and we always dine out whenever we can.

I just noticed my studio does resemble the Playboy mansion. The tudor design, the comfy furnature, game room... just missing the bunnies, the pools, the limos, the weather and of course Hef. I even have an outstanding sound system and a mirror ball.

Of course Hef does have over 100 great Acoustic and Electric guitars and 20 or so amps to choose from, 50 or so mics, half dozen keyboards, nor a 24 track digital recording platform.

So Hef and I...we're even? They say "the one who dies with the most toys wins.", but I think the type of toy should count, in which case I think Hef wins. Drats....

Chuck,
Odd that your batteries are getting stuck. Ovations come stock from the factory with duracells. Is yours one of the models with a "trapdoor" battery compartment, or the "click-in" battery holder? If it's the first, you have to push down on the battery and shut the little sliding door. It's spring loaded down there. If it's the other...?

Sitting there in your studio in your smoking jacket and pajamas, puffing on your pipe, and mumbling "I only read the articles, but why do they make it hard by printing them sideways?" will only lead to speculation on who has the most toys. Hef will win, he will show up at your party in tight jeans, with a flag motif collectors Ovation, sing Toby Keith's song and, trailing $20 bills, like the Pied Piper will lead the Bimbos to the mansion and write an article about tolerance for aging guitar players. (all this is done by highly paid stand ins who haul his Howard Hughes type body from challange to challange).

Go play your guitars. I was almost run over by Hugh Hefner and Barbie Benton at a Buick exposition at the Beverly Hills Hilton in the 70's, I was there for a Siemens X-ray spectrograpic seminar on company expense, he was there making his fortune and molesting young girls, (I think Barbie was about 16). The experience led me to get bombed in the Hilton bar and forget all the good information from the seminar, fortunately I had written it down and didn't lose my job. But I learned that the Hefners win if you let them, the secret is don't let them.

Lets go back to making music.

I have the trapdoor version to hold my battery in. The problem I had was the battery was too thick, and would not slide through the trapdoor. I got it in almost all the way, and it got stuck. I had a tough time getting it out. A second battery only went in part way before getting stuck. I tried Rayovac and Duracell. Finally went to Mar's and picked up a two pack of Danelectro's, which fit just fine. How long do batteries usually last?

It's what's worth living for (not dying for)

Waylon said something about guitars tuned right and good feeling women.

That's pretty succinct for us men.

I had a funny feeling that (M)mystery chord was gonna turn out to be a Minor chord, then again - what'd ya expect . So, how long does it take to undo your fingers from it to go to the next El Kabong chord?
