Location: Converse, Texas | I would appreciate it if someone in the Club could give me some intel on this sweet Elite 12-string a friend of mine just picked up. SN 353616, model number 1758.
It has what appears to be maple triangle fret inlays instead of pearl. Non-cutaway. Brown back, brown case. Here are my questions:
1) What do each of the four numbers mean in the model number?
2) What models had the maple inlays vs pearl inlays?
3) Any other history?
My friend found this in the used section of Mars Music here in San Antonio. He paid I believe $550 for it. Sweet sounding guitar!!! |

7- the kind of preamp
5-?
8- usually a 12 string of some kind
By the time these came out the logic of the s/n system was breaking down
Elites and Adamii usually have maple inlay
custom legends abalone
balladeers etc have MOTS (or MOPP- mother of plastic pearl)
History, just a production guitar, don't remember the dates, 80's to present I think |

Location: Converse, Texas | Thanks cwk2. I thought the last number in the model number was the bowl depth or something ... |

My Elite is from the first year built (1983) and the bowl is brown. I think they stayed that way for a few years. |

This started in the late 70's, not sure when it went away |

Location: Converse, Texas | cwktwo: Thanks for the input. According to Ovation's own "Crack the Code," the third number in the model (5) says "Custom Balladeer, Legend, Legend 12, Custom Legend 12, Anniversary." But the sticker inside clearly states Elite. So you are right, the "sense" to the serial number system clearly was breaking down. Am I reading this wrong? |
