I'm sorry your daughter listens to Britanny Spears.

Oh yeah. Many months ago, the lyrics to "oops" were revised to "oops got implants again".

Just wanted to keep you abreast of the latest.

Although you say you have not posted anything "substantial", I've found your posts usually grow and develop into the most titallating conversations.

Lady singers, is there any comparison of a Brittany to a Tammy W. who drove her own bus, and had her children with her because she wanted to be a good mother and a singer, or the Carter family flying down the road in their Cadillac with Mother Maybelle at the wheel, and the girls sleeping amongst the instruments as they travelled the southland from job to job, or Loretta and Dolly selling more records then the men and making movies.

I am trying, as I type this, to remember the name of a lady singer who sang backup on many hits and then had some of her own. The significance is that on a Country Homecoming video that I have, she had a beautiful Ovation guitar and Glen Campbell asked her if he could borrow it to do a song, and she said NO! he had to borrow somebody's wood guitar, and of course played it great. I still haven't figured out why she wouldn't trust him with her Ovation.

Lastly, I'll say a name that would almost cause fist fights in our barracks in 1953, Kitty Wells. We had a soldier from MINNISOTA who loved her music and would crank up his radio in the night whenever It wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels came on. All the New Yorkers and NEW JERSEY gangsters would threaten violence if he didn't turn it down. Those big city boys didn't see the future coming.

I humbly bow before Hizzoner in correction.

It seems that I have been (for YEARS) giving Keith a lot more vocal credit than he's due.

...and considering that I've been BANNED from EVER setting foot in the entire state of Texas, I doubt that I'll ever be speeding through Converse.

(It's all STILL a bit foggy, but it all had SOMETHING to do with two bottles of anejo, a plastic tarp, a quart of baby oil, an armadillo, and somebody's daughter).

If you like guitars AND guns -- you can come back to Texas!

AND ... if you play a guitar onstage AND carry concealed at the same time, we'll make you an honorary Texan!! Ted Nugent can attest to that!!!

Ya'll thought those round access holes in the backs of Ovations in the 80's were for changin' the batteries, didn't ya? Well, you can hide a Walther PPK in there!!!

You beat me to it, I was going to say Emmy Lou as nobody had mentioned her yet. Also, Tish Hinojosa who I don't believe has gotten the recognition she deserves , and for the great musical talent and best ability to ruin her career is k d lang.

And, of course, TINY TIM!!!

Bailey

Norseman; what a list, talk your daughter into listening to a few of these, so she can tell the difference between talent and notoriety, or even Celine Dion for someone contemporary that has great talent. (you know I'm joking, as an ex parent, 2 girls 2 boys, I would suggest you tell her how much you like Brittany and that should do it.)

Lauren AGREED!!! alanis is much too angry for a child star from Canada..poor little rich girl with such a sad life.

How about those bims from the Corrs? they can really sing and play are well (well drums and violin anyway) and they are cute.

There was also a sixties band called Sweetwater that had a really great singer in it although I forget her name.

Unfortunately we call our female vocalists divas now no matter of their talent or lack of talent and unfortunately many are so full of themselves that they think they have talent. Personally I wish Flo Ballard was still around to show up Diana Ross.
I also miss minnie Ripperton.

The Corrs (as a band) are GOOD!
But I always find I have to "glean" through their CDs to get the good stuff. They really crank on some of the more traditional Irish tunes, but a lot of their stuff (to me anyway) sounds too much like Stevie Nicks after mainlining an overdose of saccharin.

Maddy Pryor! (from Steeleye Span)

Sweetwater. Yeah, I remember them but I don't remember her name. They were actually the band that OPENED the Woodstock Festival. I guess they didn't get the tape and the film loaded into the machines till Richie Havens got on stage.

Pretty cool list up thar of female singer/songwriter/guitar players.. Can't say I agree about Jewel, I kinda like her delivery. Expecially after hearing someone else trying to sing one of her tunes without running out of breath. I also don't think Alanis is very angry, quite the opposite. She was a bit miffed with a few boyfriends, but mostly it's just pop with some really creative lyrical hooks. She can go down on me in a theater anytime.. (her words not mine). I would also add the Wilson sisters to the list, they also play those funny looking roundback guitars on occation.
From the new crop, Christina Aguilara and Pink and one other that just hit the charts have real talent. Britney is an entertainer (her words) so she isn't in this conversation. In 20 years she will be known for modeling or acting or something, music was just a way to get her out there. When Sherly Crow sings I yawn... I don't know why, cause I think she's good. As a singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarst, good but I still just yawn.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Now I had heard at one time that the LaFlammes were from New Hartford. Can anyone confirm this?

what jewel does is called yodeling. I suggest you seek out some slim whitman if that thing appeals to you.

CWK
I always loved the violin in a rock band few have done it successfully. among the best IMHO are:
It's a beautiful day
the flock
jean luc Ponty (zappa)
doug Krenshaw (ok he was more country)
papa john creach ( hot tuna jefferson airplane and starship)
Scarlet rivera (bob dylan)
suki ( early on with bruce springsteen)
laurie anderson
the corrs

it would be cool to find out what happened to the Laflamnes stellar musicians IMHO.

Violin in Rock, YES!! Let us not forget a lot of the early Aerosmith tunes, like Dream On has some cool Violin in it. Then of course there's ELO, but that's expected. Violin was often used in early Rock, Blues and Country to "fix" bad guitar notes, or vocals. Sometimes just one well places bow would keep a tape out of the trashcan. Same for Horns. Check out the cool Baratone sax on "Big Ten Inch" by Tyler and the gang.
