Location: Scotland | It's probably not a serious pre-amp problem. Presuming that the battery is in good condition the most common causes of intermittent or no output is the output jack not switching the battery on when a plug is inserted, or poor connections at the battery terminals. Change the jack to a Switchcraft or similar, any stereo jack will do the job. Also check that the sub-mini jack from the pickup to the pre is connected.

Location: UK | Hi Paul,
I'm a total layman when it comes to electronics, what do you mean by "check the sub-mini jack from the pickup to the pre is connected" if you mean is the little jack plugged in, yes it is,
cheers,

Location: Scotland | Try plugging or unplugging a cable while the other end is plugged into an amp, (keep the volume low!!!!) you should hear a pop as the battery switches on & off, if you don't it's most likely that the switch on the jack is faulty.

Location: UK | Paul,
I tried that and yes I get a pop as it switches on. This pre amp with it being a 1984 is not an EQ it only has a rotary Pot for volume and I think this could be the problem, It is very noisey when turned but still no audio from the pickup? Is there any way to test the pickup?Someone I work with is excellent with electronics so I was hoping to find a wiring diagram to assist him in curing my problem. |

Location: Scotland | Check the battery condition, the pres don't work properly once the voltage drops below around 6V. A squirt of electronic lubricant on the pot should cure the noise. Have your tech wire the pickup directly to an input & see if you get a signal, if you don't it's a pickup problem, if the pickup is working ask the the JHS (UK distributor) or the factory to send you a schematic for the preamp. I may have a working pre of this type available in a couple of weeks. JHS can supply replacement pre-amps if neccesary.

Location: UK | Hi Paul,
The battery is brand new, my techy mate has tested the pickup and thats OK so it looks like a problem with the pre amp. He is going to replace the JFET tomorrow once I get one from RS, it would obviously be easier for him if he had a diagram, I'll keep you posted, Cheers |

I may be able to help with the diagram. I linked an attachment to your listed e-mail address on your website.
Hope it helps.

Location: UK | Yipeeeeee its working again, many thanks Paul for your advice and Patsbro for the diagram, my friend discovered that it was a simple case that the ground wire on the input jack was detached, he re terminated the wires and everything is now OK, once again thanks for the help |
